Canon’s CanoScan 9000F Provides High Quality Film Scanning at Speed

Canon has today announced the launch of its latest top-of-the-range photo and document scanner, the CanoScan 9000F, designed to meet the needs of photographers requiring a versatile and productive scanner also capable of scanning a range of film transparencies. The CanoScan 9000F has evolved from the Canon CanoScan 8800F and boasts a number of new improved features to boost its productivity. Quality has been enhanced to include a 9,600 x 9,600 dpi CCD sensor, providing unsurpassed reproduction with incredible detail capture. The 48-bit colour depth ensures exceptionally accurate colour rendition and images suitable for enlargement and high-resolution printing.

Already boasting the fastest, highest quality film scanners on the market, Canon has excelled again as the CanoScan 9000F achieves new performance benchmarks. The new film adaptor allows more light to penetrate the unit, enabling even faster speeds with one frame of 35mm negative film scanned in approximately 18 seconds (at 1,200dpi resolution).

Many of the best features of the Canon CanoScan 8800F have been retained, including mounted slides and medium format film in either positive or negative. The zero warm-up time and the ability to Auto Scan to PC, e-mail, copy or PDF all at the touch of a button also remain. In addition, the CanoScan 9000F now also provides an accurate Optical Character Recognition (OCR) function to convert printed text to editable electronic documents without the hassle of retyping.

The seven EZ scan buttons offer simple, one-touch operation but the CanoScan 9000F has taken the functionality one step further with the ‘Auto-Scan’ button for automatic recognition type of originals, scanning and saving with suitable settings. A fully integrated power adaptor is also now included, providing a compact and fully portable desktop scanner.

Canon’s unique Film Automatic Retouching and Enhancement (FARE) Level 3 technology is integrated in the scanner, removing dust and restoring scratched film by using an infrared light that scans for physical defects on the film surface.

Canon has added the Auto Photo Fix II and Auto Document Fix features to provide the user with complete control over the output and quality of the final images. Auto Photo Fix II resolves common faults like washed-out faces, dull skin tones or over/under-saturated scenery and can ‘recognise’ the type of scene in a photo. Similarly, Auto Document Fix delivers beautiful and easy-to-view scan results by automatic advanced image analysis and area-by-area data correction.

The CanoScan 9000F is bundled with a powerful suite of high quality software for imaging, creative and business applications. This includes Adobe PhotoShop Elements, ArcSoft PhotoStudio and the advanced SilverFast SE package, which provides photographers with greater control for film scanning. It also comes with MP Navigator EX, which makes operating the scanner and performing complex operations simple and easy.

Adobe CS5 launch date announced

Adobe Systems Incorporated today announced Adobe® Creative Suite® 5, a breakthrough release of the industry-leading design and development software for virtually every creative workflow. Focusing on interactivity, performance and maximizing the impact of digital content and marketing campaigns across media and devices, the Creative Suite 5 product line brings exciting full version upgrades of flagship creative tools while delivering significant workflow enhancements to designers and developers. Featuring integration with online content and digital marketing measurement and optimization capabilities for the first time, Creative Suite 5 products include access to signature Omniture technologies, to capture, store and analyse information generated by Web sites and other sources. Additionally, a brand new component, Adobe Flash® Catalyst™, joins the Creative Suite, ushering in the ability to design interactive content without writing code and improve the collaborative process between designer and developer.

The Adobe CS5 product family also enables the creation of content and applications for the much anticipated releases of Flash Player 10.1 and Adobe AIR® 2, which are optimized for high performance on mobile screens and designed to take advantage of native device capabilities for a richer, more immersive user experience.

The new line-up is headlined by Adobe Creative Suite 5 Master Collection, which includes, in a single package, all of Adobe’s renowned Creative Suite tools, such as Photoshop® CS5 (see separate release), Illustrator® CS5, InDesign® CS5 (see separate release), Flash Catalyst CS5 (see separate release), Flash Professional CS5, Dreamweaver® CS5, Adobe® Premiere® Pro CS5 (see separate release) and After Effects® CS5. These tools are also available separately or in one of the five Creative Suite editions. The complete Creative Suite 5 line-up includes Creative Suite 5 Master Collection, Creative Suite 5 Design Premium, Creative Suite 5 Web Premium, Creative Suite 5 Production Premium and Creative Suite 5 Design Standard, as well as 15 point products, associated technologies and integration with new Adobe CS Live Services (CS Live Services are complimentary for a limited time).*

“While Creative Suite 5 continues Adobe’s storied history of delivering astonishing new creative features, this release first and foremost addresses the challenges facing publishers and creatives worldwide—how to build profitable businesses around digital content,” said Shantanu Narayen, president and chief executive officer at Adobe. “By coupling sophisticated online business analytics with dazzling creative tools, we’re ensuring that publishers, designers and marketers can create, deliver and optimize beautiful, high-impact digital experiences across media and devices.”

More than 250 new features have been integrated into the Adobe Creative Suite 5 Master Collection. InDesign CS5 is powering the transition to digital publishing with new interactive documents and enhanced electronic reader device support. Image creation and editing get a boost in Photoshop CS5 with Refine Edge, which offers better edge detecting technology and masking results in less time. Photoshop CS5 also includes the ability to remove an image element and immediately replace the missing pixels with Content-Aware Fill. New stroke options allow Adobe Illustrator CS5 users to create strokes of variable widths and precisely adjust the width at any point along the stroke.

Engineering breakthroughs throughout Adobe Creative Suite 5 Master Collection work together to dramatically improve performance. Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects are now native 64-bit applications on both Mac and Windows®, allowing users to work more fluidly when working on high-resolution projects. The highly anticipated NVIDIA® GPU-accelerated Adobe Mercury Playback Engine allows Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 users to open projects faster, refine effects-rich HD sequences in real time and play back complex projects without rendering. The revolutionary time-saving Roto Brush tool in After Effects helps users isolate moving foreground elements in a fraction of the normal time. In addition, Dreamweaver CS5 now supports popular content management systems Drupal, Joomla! And WordPress, allowing designers to get accurate views of dynamic Web content from within the product.

Adobe Creative Suite 5 products integrate with new Adobe CS Live, a set of five online services that accelerate key aspects of the creative workflow and enable designers to focus on creating their best work. CS Live online services are complimentary for a limited time and currently include Adobe BrowserLab, Adobe CS Review, Acrobat.com, Adobe Story and SiteCatalyst® NetAverages™ from Omniture. Adobe CS Review enables online design reviews directly from Creative Suite 5 applications, while Adobe BrowserLab is an indispensable tool for testing Web site content across different browsers and operating systems. NetAverages provides Web usage data that helps reduce the guesswork early in the creative process when designing for Web and mobile. Adobe Story is a collaborative scriptwriting tool that improves production and post-production workflows in CS5 Production Premium. Access to Acrobat services, such as Adobe ConnectNow Web conferencing, is also included to enhance discussion and information exchange with colleagues and clients around the globe.

Using Flash Professional CS5, designers and developers can create, test and deliver Web content across a wide range of mobile platforms and devices such as smartphones, tablets, netbooks, smartbooks and other consumer electronics. Users can look forward to deploying content in the browser with Flash Player 10.1 and as a standalone application with AIR 2 when those planned products become available. In addition, users can now build AIR applications using the new Packager for iPhone tool preview, a component of Flash Professional CS5, which can be deployed on the iPhone and iPad (subject to Apple's requirements and approval) with future device support planned for Android, BlackBerry and Palm webOS.

Adobe CS5 will be available to purchase at Okobe.co.uk from May 2010.

Google China redirects to Hong Kong

Overnight in China, Google started redirecting users of its mainland Chinese search engine Google.cn to the uncensored, Hong Kong-based Google.com.hk, presenting a challenge to China’s control of the Internet.

Google’s latest move to offer unfiltered results to Chinese users represents the most prominent challenge to Chinese authorities in recent memory, particularly for a company that says it still wants to do business in China. The redirection of users to the Hong Kong site could be seen as compounding the offense since it is clearly based on the wider freedoms available in Hong Kong under the “one country, two systems” policy.

The former British colony of Hong Kong, which returned to Chinese rule in 1997, maintains a separate legal system and has a free press. Google’s Hong Kong office is registered as a separate legal entity from its mainland China offices.

Google.hk offers many of the same services as Google.cn, as well as a simplified Chinese-language option (Hong Kong uses traditional Chinese characters). On the simplified Chinese home page of Google.hk, users are greeted with a message that reads: “Welcome to the new home of Google Search in China.” Users can also access Google’s free Chinese music download service through the Hong Kong site.

The Hong Kong government said Tuesday it doesn’t censor the content of Web sites and fully respects freedom of information. “There are no restrictions on access to Web sites, including Hong Kong-based Web sites, from China,” the government said in an e-mailed statement.

The question now is how long China will allow Google to continue to exploit the loophole offered by “one country, two systems.” Mainland authorities could easily revoke Google’s right to use the Google.cn domain name (as well as the related g.cn domain) and/or block access to the Hong Kong site, but beyond that, Google’s activities in Hong Kong are largely beyond their reach. This has made the city a haven for media outlets that take a critical stance toward the Chinese government, such as Jimmy Lai’s Next Media (publisher of Apple Daily) and the U.S. government-funded Radio Free Asia, as well as human rights groups and NGOs that focus on issues in China.

China’s response so far doesn’t offer much comfort. This morning, Xinhua news agency cited an official from the Internet bureau of the State Council Information Office slamming the U.S. Internet giant’s actions.

“Google has violated its written promise it made when entering the Chinese market by stopping filtering its searching service and blaming China in insinuation for alleged hacker attacks,” the unnamed official was quoted as saying. “This is totally wrong. We’re uncompromisingly opposed to the politicization of commercial issues, and express our discontent and indignation to Google for its unreasonable accusations and conducts.”

Fujifilm's New Stunt Man - the FinePix XP10 Digital Camera

Waterproof, Shockproof, Freezeproof and Dustproof; all weather, all terrain! Fujifilm is proud to announce the launch of the FinePix XP10, the first in a new category of super-resilient compact camera that really can withstand the elements.

Not only is the XP10 a Born Survivor, but with its core specification of a 12 Megapixel resolution, high-precision 5x Fujinon lens and HD recording, you can capture breathtaking images with total peace of mind. The FinePix XP10's tough credentials are neatly hidden in its stylish metal body which is so slim it'll fit in your back pocket. And, with an exciting NEW easy web upload function, sharing photos of your daring stunts with your friends is quick and simple.

The FinePix XP10 is the ultimate lifestyle camera. Drop it, soak it, freeze it or bury it in sand, this camera will come out unscathed. Not only is the XP10 waterproof to 3 metres, but it is also shockproof to 1 metre, freezeproof to minus 10oC and dustproof, too, giving users total confidence that they can take it with them wherever they go, whatever they are doing, regardless of the conditions.

Most tough and waterproof compact cameras have big, bulky shells. This is where the FinePix XP10 really stands out. Although it is waterproof, dustproof, freezeproof and shockproof it still retains the handsome, chiselled design of a conventional compact camera, making it suitable for both taking down the beach surfing or slipping into your pocket or handbag for a night out.

With a gorgeous metal body, the XP10 is a camera that looks and feels highly sophisticated, but still offers all the practicalities of an 'outdoor' camera.

Carefully disguised in its slender shell is a high quality Fujinon 5x internal vertical zoom lens. The Fujinon glass elements have an ion coating to give five times more protection than a conventional lens. What's more, the 5x zoom operates internally meaning it is extra protected from knocks and scrapes. Match this with Digital Image Stabilisation to reduce image-blur, high sensitivity settings (to ISO 1600) and a high resolution 12 Megapixel CCD sensor, and this camera delivers sharp and clear images at the touch of a button.

To ensure perfect results every time, the XP10 employs SR AUTO to intelligently identify the scene type and the shooting conditions present, and optimises the camera's settings as appropriate.

It also features Fujifilm's highly-effective and acclaimed Face Detection technology with auto red-eye removal, which eliminates any unsightly red-eye in-camera whilst the photo is being taken.

Additionally, 720p HD image and movie capture meaning memories can be re-lived in glorious high definition on any HD ready television*. *To connect to an HD-ready TV, you will need a HD Card Reader and HDMI cable (optional extras).

If you want to share your adventures with friends online the XP10's NEW Facebook/YouTube Easy Web Upload function will make your life so much easier. This feature saves time being spent trawling through the photos on your computer to decide which ones to upload, instead, in playback mode on the camera you got to the Menu option and 'mark' a picture for Facebook or You Tube upload. Then once you connect the XP10 to a computer and access the MyFinePix Studio software (included in the box), all you have to do is press "upload" and the marked pictures and videos will transfer to the selected site.

The perfect tool for capturing those fast-paced action shots, Target Focus tracks fast moving subjects so they don't escape from the frame in a blur. This handy function racks a subject automatically for as long as the shutter is half-pressed; the subject is kept in the frame and when you fully press the shutter button your subject will be in the centre of the photo, in sharp focus.

Get creative and add your own finishing touches to your videos and images, amongst others you can choose from B&W, Sepia, or you can even add a dynamic lighting effect, all this in-camera.

The waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof and dustproof FinePix XP10 is well suited to young people with active lifestyles. With an impressive specification and useful features, the FinePix XP10 makes taking and sharing photos fun and trouble-free.

FujiFilm FinePix HS10 – the ultimate 'all in one' photographer's camera!

The FinePix HS10 - Extreme long zoom, high speed capture and unique features for the ultimate 'all in one' photographer's camera

New enthusiast FinePix features the world's first 30x optical zoom with manual zoom mechanism, advanced photographic features and full HD movie capture.

Serious photographers wanting the versatility and performance of an SLR system without the bulk or expense now have the perfect solution in the shape of the new Fujifilm FinePix HS10. The latest addition to Fujifilm's award-winning range of big zoom 'bridge' cameras offers an unprecedented feature set that combines a powerful 24-720mm (30x) zoom lens with sophisticated photographic controls, advanced functionality and SLR-like handling in a single compact, affordable unit.

Utilising cutting-edge Back Side Illumination CMOS capture married to class-leading Fujinon optical design, the FinePix HS10's unique mix of advanced technologies brings several new features designed to make achieving professional-looking pictures easier than ever to the FinePix range, whilst maintaining Fujifilm's legendary image quality and low-light shooting performance.

A lens so good you'll be glad you can't change it!

With a range that would require at least two bulky 'super zoom' lenses on an SLR, the FinePix HS10's built-in 30x wide-tele zoom lens is its crowning glory, encompassing virtually every photographic requirement in a single compact unit. Furthermore, because the lens and body on the FinePix HS10 are built as a closed unit, it eliminates the possibility of dust on the lens and Sensor - a serious problem when removing lenses on a digital SLR.

The twist-barrel manual zoom control enables the photographer to make precision adjustments, and zooming is faster and more accurate than with the powered zooms traditionally used in this class of camera.

The class-leading 30x optical zoom covers a uniquely versatile 24-720mm (equivalent on a 35mm camera) range from true wide-angle to ultra telephoto. From sweeping landscapes, interiors and large group shots to distant sports or wildlife action, the FinePix HS10 really is ready for every photographic challenge thrown at it. And it's not just the huge zoom that'll take your breath away: the Fujinon name ensures optical quality across the entire range that you'll see from the first picture you take. Fujinon lenses are acclaimed by photographers, broadcasters (as the world's leading manufacturer of television camera lenses) and industrial users across the globe - and even further afield: Fujinon lenses have been used in an orbital satellite to capture high-resolution photos of the surface of the moon.

Triple Image Stabilisation combines a mechanically stabilised CMOS sensor with high ISO sensitivities and advanced digital stabilisation for total anti-blur protection. Together these technologies reduce the blurring effect of both handshake and subject movement to provide sharp, clean and clear results even at the longest zoom settings or in the most challenging lighting conditions.

High Speed, High Definition. Whether you're shooting stills or movie clips, the FinePix HS10's cutting-edge sensor and processing technologies open up a range of high speed capture modes and unique shooting possibilities.

When you're shooting sports action or wildlife - or simply trying to keep up with fast-moving children - the 10 frames-per-second high speed with mechanical shutter continuous shooting and new tracking auto focus feature will ensure you never miss that vital moment. And since the FinePix HS10 can perform its remarkable feat of shooting 10 fps even at the maximum 10 megapixel setting, when you do get the perfect shot you don't need to worry about having enough resolution for even a large-sized print. The FinePix HS10's unique Best Frame Capture Mode means you don't need the reactions of a pro sports photographer to get professional results either; in this mode the camera continuously records images from the moment you focus, then saves up to 7 shots before or after you press the shutter release. Capturing action with the FinePix HS10 is so easy it feels like cheating.

Apple unveils $499 iPad, bets on new device class

Apple Inc's stock slipped on Thursday, a day after the company's much-hyped unveiling of the iPad tablet computer.

Apple shares were down 4 percent at $199.62 on Thursday afternoon on the Nasdaq. The company's stock often sells off following major product announcements.

Separately, Nokia Oyj said it gained share in the smartphone market, while analysts said Apple's iPhone lost some ground against its competitors.

The iPad is a thin and light, 9.7-inch touchscreen device good for Web browsing, video, games and electronic books.

Chief Executive Steve Jobs formally introduced the product at a high-profile media event on Wednesday after months of rumors that helped propel Apple's shares to an all-time high earlier in January.

The device will start at $499, a price point much lower than expected and which was well-received by analysts. But Apple is positioning the iPad as a "third category" device -- somewhere between laptops and smartphones -- and demand is still uncertain.

"On balance, we view the iPad as a modest disappointment relative to expectations/rumors around features, although the relatively low entry level price was an upside surprise," Sanford Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi wrote in a research note.

He said Apple could sell 5 million units in the first year, with a potential earnings-per-share contribution of 28 cents. He said the device will be most attractive to consumers interested in netbooks and electronic readers, and does not expect it to cannibalize Apple's Macbook laptops.

Analysts also pointed out that the iPad does not support Adobe Systems Inc's widely used Flash format, so there may be compatibility issues with certain websites, and that it does not have a camera.

Barclays Capital analyst Ben Reitzes said Apple's product announcement came in largely as expected.
"However, the pricing is much more attractive than expected and clearly shows that Apple desires mass market appeal," he wrote in a note.

Reitzes estimated Apple will ship 2.9 million units in fiscal 2010 and 7.3 million in fiscal 2011. He raised his price target to $285 from $265.

Oppenheimer & Co analyst Yair Reiner issued a more modest sales forecast of 1.1 million units in fiscal 2010 and 4 million in 2011. Reiner also took his price target to $265 from $255.

"It won't happen overnight, but in time, we believe that what looks today like a big iPhone or an amputated netbook or a souped-up photo frame will be revealed as a revolutionary new media device," Reiner wrote.

Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700 Brings the Cinema Home

You’re already using your laptop to listen to music, play games, and watch movies, TV and videos. You’re already using it on the sofa and on the bed. But you’re looking for a way to be comfortable, and you know what a difference high-quality audio can make when you’re enjoying good entertainment. For a cinema-like experience on your laptop, Logitech (SIX: LOGN) (NASDAQ: LOGI) today introduced the Logitech® Speaker Lapdesk N700 the company’s first all-in-one laptop accessory with integrated stereo speakers, a built-in fan and a wide padded base.

“More and more people around the world are enjoying fantastic entertainment on their laptops but with mediocre sound and comfort,” said Denis Pavillard, Logitech vice president of product marketing for laptop accessories. “In fact, according to our research nearly 50 percent of laptop users report being dissatisfied with the sound quality of the built-in speakers. The Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700 helps transform your laptop into a private cinema in the cosy confines of your lap.”

Unlike most laptop speakers, the Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700 offers two built-in high-definition speakers with 2-inch high-performance speakers. Specially designed for notebook computers, the stereo speakers are precisely positioned on either side of your laptop to give you rich sound and powerful bass. And, because they connect through a single USB cable, there’s no cable clutter or the hassle of moving and setting up external speakers.

While you’re enjoying entertainment on your laptop, the Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700 helps keep you comfortable. Whether you’re on the sofa or in bed, the viewing angle of your screen and the padded base help you sit in a more comfortable position. Meanwhile, a quiet, efficient fan circulates air under your notebook, and the heat-shielding design helps keep laptop heat off your legs and lap. Plus, a grill protects the fan from dust and damage, and rear and bottom air intakes ensure steady, unobstructed airflow.

The Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700 is easy to set up and use, just plug in the single USB cable and play movies, music, online videos, and more in rich, full stereo sound – there’s no software to install and no need for batteries. And to put convenient, independent control at your fingertips, the Speaker Lapdesk N700 offers volume controls for the speakers and an On/Off switch for the fan.

D-Link Now Shipping its Smallest Wireless USB Adapter

USB adapter featuring wireless 802.11n and push-button security, in a thumbnail sized design

D-Link, the end-to-end networking solutions provider for business and consumers, today announced that it is shipping the D-Link Wireless N Nano USB Adapter incorporating the speed and greater range of 802.11n Wi-Fi technology, into one of the smallest form factors of its type on the market.

D-Link’s Wireless N Nano USB Adapter, DWA-131, provides an easy and cost-effective way to upgrade the wireless network performance of a desktop or notebook computer. The Nano Adapter connects to a Wireless 802.11n network providing download speeds of up to 300 Mbps*1. Network users can access high-speed Internet services, transfer files and stream media from virtually anywhere in their home or office.

The Nano Adapter’s Wi-Fi Protected Setup, WPS feature, enables it to establish an easy, one-time, single-click secure connection with a WPS-enabled access point or wireless router, eliminating the need for manual entry of complex encryption codes. WPS automatically sets advanced security features using WPA2 encryption. As an alternative, D-Link's Quick Setup Wizard also provides an easy way to set up the USB adapter and the included Wireless Manager helps to keep track of recently accessed networks.

"With its sleek compact design and unmatched performance, this ultra-portable USB adapter is an ideal choice for setting up a secure, high-performance wireless connection" explains Andrew Mulholland, Marketing Manager for D-Link UKI.

The D-Link Nano Adapter uses 802.11n technology to maximise the speed and range of wireless signals to significantly outperform 802.11g devices*2, while maintaining compatibility with existing 802.11b/g wireless routers and access points.

D-Link Wireless N products use smart antenna technology to transmit multiple streams of data, bouncing wireless signals off walls and ceilings to work around obstructions and help eliminate dead spots, allowing users to receive wireless signals in the farthest corners of their home or office.

Western Digital introduces a My Book range of hard drives with an e-label display.

Western Digital developed the e-label high-contrast smart display which reads like ink on paper, and lets the user create a customised label to describe the drive's contents.

Utilising e-paper technology similar to that found on the ebook readers, the information on the display remains clearly visible even when the drive is unplugged, and can be changed easily and as often as desired. The e-label also shows available storage capacity and drive security status.

The new My Book Studio drives feature user-selected password protection combined with 256-bit hardware-based encryption, which scrambles files before they are stored. Typically found only on much more expensive drive systems, the encryption acts as a virtual padlock to keep users' data safe.

The new My Book Studio drives also come equipped with WD SmartWare software, an integrated application which provides automatic and continuous backup, as well as control of the e-label display, password and other settings. When the My Book Studio drive is plugged in for the first time, the simple and intuitive first backup process launches automatically. The real-time visual interface of WD SmartWare software gives users a reassuring view of their backup as it happens. After the first backup, users' files are backed up automatically every time they change or add a file.

WD SmartWare software is compatible with the Apple® TimeMachine. Users with older versions of Mac OS (not equipped with TimeMachine) or those who wish to use the drive for both backup and extra storage have the option to use WD SmartWare software backup capability.

The new Western Digital My Book Studio drives feature:

* Smart display with a customisable e-label that reminds users of what is stored on the drive, available capacity and security status at-a-glance, even when the drive is unplugged;
* High-performance FireWire 800 interface to access data at top speeds and USB 2.0 interface;
* Plug-and-play ready for Mac users and compatible with Apple TimeMachine;
* WD SmartWare software that visually presents consumers' data in a software control center, providing them peace of mind that their precious photos, videos and files are securely protected;
* 256-bit hardware-based encryption and password protection for peace of mind knowing that data is protected from unauthorised access;
* Smaller, sleeker, more streamlined design and elegant book-like shape that takes up minimal space and allows two or more My Book drives to nestle together neatly like volumes on a shelf;
* WD GreenPower Technology™ lowers internal drive power consumption by up to 30 percent, a sleep mode reduces power during idle times, and a power-saving feature turns the drive on and off with your computer;
* Planet-friendly packaging derived from recycled materials to minimise waste;
* HFS + Journaled1 formatting and are compatible with Mac OS X Tiger®, Leopard® and Snow Leopard™;

WD SmartWare software features:
* Visual backup displays that show content in categories and shows the progress of backup;
* Automatic, continuous data backup will instantly make a second copy whenever you add or change a file;
* Retrieve valuable data to its original location whether it's lost data or the file has been overwritten; and,
* Customisable data backup that allows user to set drive security, run diagnostics, manage the power settings, and more from the WD SmartWare control center.

Apple - We’ve built a better mouse. 29 October 2009

It began with the iPhone. Then came the iPod touch. Then the MacBook Pro. Intuitive, smart, dynamic. Multi-Touch technology introduced a remarkably better way to interact with your portable devices — all using gestures. Now Apple has reached another milestone by bringing gestures to the desktop with a mouse that’s unlike anything ever before. It's called Magic Mouse. It's the world's first Multi-Touch mouse. And while it comes standard with every new iMac, you can also add it to any Bluetooth-enabled Mac for a Multi-Touch makeover.

Seamless Multi-Touch Surface

Magic Mouse — with its low-profile design and seamless top shell — is so sleek and dramatically different, it brings a whole new feel to the way you get around on your Mac. You can’t help but marvel at its smooth, buttonless appearance. Then you touch it and instantly appreciate how good it feels in your hand. But it’s when you start using Magic Mouse that everything comes together.

The Multi-Touch area covers the top surface of Magic Mouse, and the mouse itself is the button. Scroll in any direction with one finger, swipe through web pages and photos with two, and click and double-click anywhere. Inside Magic Mouse is a chip that tells it exactly what you want to do. Which means Magic Mouse won’t confuse a scroll with a swipe. It even knows when you’re just resting your hand on it.

Laser-Tracking Engine
Magic Mouse uses powerful laser tracking that’s far more sensitive and responsive on more surfaces than traditional optical tracking. That means it tracks with precision on nearly every surface — whether it’s a table at your favorite cafe or the desk in your home office — without the need for a mousepad.

Wireless
Magic Mouse connects wirelessly to your Mac via Bluetooth, so there’s no wire or separate adapter to worry about. Pair Magic Mouse with your Bluetooth-enabled Mac and enjoy a reliable and secure connection up to 33 feet away. When you combine Magic Mouse with the Apple Wireless Keyboard, you create a workspace free of annoying cables.

And because Magic Mouse is wireless, it can venture beyond the confines of your desk. A quick flick of the on/off switch helps conserve battery power while Magic Mouse is tucked in your bag. Even when it’s on, Magic Mouse manages power efficiently, by detecting periods of inactivity automatically.
Make one great gesture after another.

Multi-Touch technology on the iPhone and iPod touch introduced a breakthrough way to interact with your content. Magic Mouse, with its Multi-Touch surface, does the same thing for your Mac. When you use gestures, it’s as if you’re touching what’s on your screen. For instance, swiping through web pages in Safari gives you the feeling of flicking through pages in a magazine. And scrolling with Magic Mouse isn’t your everyday scrolling. It supports momentum scrolling (similar to iPhone and iPod touch), where the scrolling speed is dictated by how fast or slowly you perform the gesture.

Give it your personal touch
Maybe you want scrolling but don’t want swiping. Or two-button clicking instead of one. Whatever the case, Magic Mouse works the way you want it to work. All you do is go to the Magic Mouse preference pane in System Preferences to enable or disable features.

The ambidextrous design of Magic Mouse means it fits comfortably in your right hand if you’re a righty or in your left hand if you’re a lefty. And left-handers can easily swap left and right button functionality using System Preferences.
System Requirements

* Bluetooth-enabled Mac computer
* Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later with Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0* or Mac OS X v10.6.1 or later with Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0
* Existing keyboard and mouse for setup
* Two AA batteries (included)

Microsoft Simplifies the PC With Windows 7

Today Microsoft Corp. announced the worldwide availability of its new Windows 7 operating system. Windows 7 delivers on a simple premise: make it easier for people to do the things they want on a PC. The new operating system offers a streamlined user interface and significant new features that make everyday tasks easier and allows people to get the most out of computers of all styles and sizes.

“With Windows 7, there’s never been a better time to be a PC,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “Together with our partners, we’re bringing more choice, flexibility and value to the market than ever before. With Windows 7, you’re sure to find a PC that fits your life.”

Building Windows 7 has been a collaborative process from the beginning, with Microsoft’s engineers and designers working with customers and partners to build an operating system that delivers on the vision of the PC, simplified. In a speech in New York, Ballmer thanked the millions of volunteers who helped improve the product by testing early versions.

“A project with the global customer reach of Windows can only be done as a team,” said Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft, speaking at a launch event in Tokyo. “We are grateful for the valuable contributions from customers, partners and developers around the world that helped make Windows 7 such a collaborative project.”

On Sale Worldwide Today
The global availability of Windows 7 is joined by an unprecedented array of new PCs and software programs. With more PC options available for customers today at a wide range of price points starting under £200, customers can choose the PC that fits their personality, style and needs, from netbooks, ultrathin notebooks and highly interactive multitouch laptops to all-in-one desktops and high-end, water-cooled gaming machines.

Customers can purchase PCs with Windows 7 or software upgrades online or in-store from technology retailers or at the new Microsoft Store, launching today in its first retail location in Scottsdale, Ariz., and expanded online. Retailers and technology partners are also featuring a series of limited-time offers for customers looking for great deals on Windows 7-based PCs, devices and software.

To show how Windows 7 simplifies the PC, today Microsoft is launching the next wave of its global “I’m a PC” campaign. The global enthusiasm of Windows users is also contributing to the way many people around the world will experience Windows 7 for the first time. Tens of thousands of customers have volunteered to host launch parties or meet-ups beginning today, showing off Windows 7 to friends and family members.

Simplifying the PC
Over the past 18 months, feedback from more than a billion opt-in customer sessions and 8 million beta testers validated Microsoft’s research on how to simplify everyday tasks. Here are a few of the many ways users will experience a more simplified PC with Windows 7:

Simplifies Everyday Tasks
- Taskbar. The go-to spot for launching programs and switching windows, the taskbar has been completely redesigned to help users work smarter, cut clutter, and get more done, with features such as thumbnail previews of Web pages, documents — even running video.

- HomeGroup. Users can easily share their files and printers with other PCs running Windows 7 in their home.

- Windows 7 Device Stage. This shows the status of all connected devices such as cameras and mobile phones, and makes it easier to synchronize and manage them.

- Photos and videos. Windows Live Photo Gallery and Windows Live Movie Maker (available via download) offer customers great, free options to edit photos and videos and easily share them with loved ones.

- Snap. Users can drag an open window to the screen’s border to automatically re-size it. Snap two different windows to the left and right borders for a perfect comparison.

- Shake. Users can click on a window pane and shake the mouse to minimize all other open windows, then shake the pane again to restore the windows to their original sizes.

- Internet Explorer 8. Microsoft’s fastest, easiest and safest browser ever offers smart new features such as Instant Search, Accelerators and Web Slices to help users get more out of the Web.

Works the Way Users Want
- Faster on, faster off. Every Windows 7 user will benefit from the focus on underlying performance, faster startup, resuming and shut down time, and enhanced power management.

- Mobile made easier. All of a user’s mobile computing settings are in one place with the Windows Mobility Center.

- Protecting the PC. Safeguarding the data on a PC is easier with advanced backup capabilities and the free Microsoft Security Essentials download to help protect users against viruses, spyware and other malicious software.

Makes New Things Possible
- Windows Touch. Users can interact with the PC with a touch-screen monitor, using their fingers and multitouch gestures.

- PlayTo. Users can stream their digital music, videos and photos to other PCs or devices such as an Xbox 360 console connected to the TV.

- Internet TV. New content providers and an improved interface make it even easier to watch TV on the PC.

- Rich gaming and graphics. Windows 7 includes performance enhancements that take power gaming and entertainment to a new level, with 64-bit support and DirectX 11 graphics.

- Location-aware printing. Documents are sent to the right printer whether it’s at home or at the office. And with Offline Files users can work offline and automatically synchronize between a PC and documents on their office network.

Along with increased customer involvement, Microsoft’s partners had a closer, more involved role in the product vision and planning process with Windows 7. The collaborative approach to engaging partners to inform development efforts has resulted in improved performance for PCs as well as compatibility with a broad range of software and hardware across the Windows ecosystem. More than 50,000 developers from 17,000 companies are enrolled in the Windows Ecosystem Readiness Program to build solutions for Windows 7. Together, these partners are developing hardware, software and services capable of reaching more than a billion PCs around the world.

Apple Unveils Mac OS X Snow Leopard!

Apple® today unveiled Mac OS® X Snow Leopard™, an even more powerful and refined version of the world’s most advanced operating system and the foundation for future Mac® innovation. Snow Leopard builds on a decade of OS X innovation and success with hundreds of refinements, new core technologies, out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange and new accessibility features. Snow Leopard will ship as an upgrade for Mac OS X Leopard users in September 2009.

“We’ve built on the success of Leopard and created an even better experience for our users from installation to shutdown,” said Bertrand Serlet, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “Apple engineers have made hundreds of improvements so with Snow Leopard your system is going to feel faster, more responsive and even more reliable than before.”

To create Snow Leopard, Apple engineers focused on perfecting the world’s most advanced operating system, refining 90 percent of the more than 1,000 projects in Mac OS X. Users will notice a more responsive Finder™; Mail that loads messages 85 percent faster and conducts searches up to 90 percent faster;* Time Machine® with up to 50 percent faster initial backup;* a Dock with Exposé integration; a 64-bit version of Safari® 4 that boosts the performance of the Nitro JavaScript engine by up to 50 percent** and is resistant to crashes caused by plug-ins. Snow Leopard also includes an all new QuickTime® X, with a redesigned player that allows users to easily view, record, trim and share video to YouTube, MobileMe™ or iTunes®. Snow Leopard is half the size of the previous version and frees up to 6GB of drive space once installed.

For the first time, system applications including Finder, Mail, iCal®, iChat® and Safari are 64-bit and Snow Leopard’s support for 64-bit processors makes use of large amounts of RAM, increases performance, and improves security while remaining compatible with 32-bit applications. Grand Central Dispatch (GCD) provides a revolutionary new way for software to take advantage of multicore processors. GCD is integrated throughout Snow Leopard, from new system-wide APIs to high-level frameworks and programming language extensions, improving responsiveness across the system. OpenCL, a C-based open standard, allows developers to tap the incredible power of the graphics processing unit for tasks that go beyond graphics.

Snow Leopard builds support for Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 right into Mac OS X Mail, Address Book and iCal so you can use these applications to send and receive email, create and respond to meeting invitations, and search and manage your contacts with global address lists. Exchange information works seamlessly within Snow Leopard so users can take advantage of OS X only features such as fast Spotlight™ searches and Quick Look previews. Snow Leopard is the only desktop operating system with out of the box support for Exchange 2007 and businesses of any size will find it easier to integrate Macs into their organization.

Every Mac includes innovative features and technologies for users with special needs, and Snow Leopard adds groundbreaking new features that make the Mac experience even more accessible to those with a vision impairment. Apple’s Multi-Touch™ trackpad is now integrated with the VoiceOver screen reader so users can hear and navigate different parts of a window or the desktop by moving a single finger around the trackpad as if it were the screen. Snow Leopard also introduces built-in support for wireless bluetooth braille displays and the connection of multiple braille displays simultaneously to one Mac.
