Take the first step into the world of EOS – Canon unveils the EOS 1100D

Canon today unveils the new EOS 1100D – the Digital SLR (DSLR) for consumers who want to take the first step on their journey to outstanding still images and HD video. Featuring many technologies developed for more advanced models, and functions which make it even easier to capture fantastic images straight out of the box, the EOS 1100D helps you to have fun with your photography and impress your friends with amazing portraits, landscapes or creative shots.

As your skills develop, the EOS 1100D grows with you. As the gateway to Canon’s world-famous EOS System, the EOS 1100D lets you experiment with more than 60 different lenses and other accessories including Speedlite flashes, to explore the world of photography.

Advanced imaging made easy
Compact and lightweight, the EOS 1100D is a highly versatile DSLR that’s easy to carry with you, allowing you to capture any moment in stunning quality. When a scene lends itself to video as well as stills, 720p HD video capture is easily accessible via the dedicated movie function on the mode dial. Never miss a moment of the action as you frame your image easily and accurately through the newly-designed, bright optical viewfinder, offering 95% coverage of the scene. Alternatively, use Live View to see how different shooting modes will affect the final image on the large rear screen.

You’ll be able to take great images as soon as you start using the EOS 1100D. A Feature Guide in the menu system offers a brief description of each key camera setting and its effect, helping beginners to learn about their camera as they use it.

Basic+ and Creative Auto remove any confusing technical terms, using plain language to describe settings and their effect on the final image. Apply a different ambience to a scene, with Basic+ adjusting exposure, white balance and image processing settings according to easy-to-understand pre-sets based on the creative intent or lighting type. Alternatively, make your image lighter, darker or blur the background to create more interesting results with Creative Auto, which takes all the confusion out of achieving the desired effect.

Shoot and share anywhere
The EOS 1100D also makes it easier to shoot and instantly share your images and HD video with friends and family. The large 6.8cm (2.7”) LCD screen features a sharp 230k-dot resolution and wide viewing angle, making it easy to review the day’s shoot immediately. Alternatively, sit back and enjoy the big-screen image playback by connecting the EOS 1100D directly to an HDTV via HDMI, using the TV remote control to scroll through images and enjoy your own high-quality video.

Thanks to support for Eye-Fi Connected Functions[1], EOS 1100D users can wirelessly transfer their images to a home PC or bypass this stage completely and upload images and video direct to an online sharing account like the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY or Flickr – inspiring everyone to share special, fun and creative photography.

From beginners to pros, the EOS system is used the world over
Designed as a user-friendly, powerful, entry-level DSLR, the EOS 1100D features an impressive specification to support the image quality and performance promised by the Canon and EOS brands.

A 12.2 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor enables A3 size images to be recorded or cropped for exciting compositions, without compromising on image quality or print size, while DIGIC 4 image processing allows you to freeze the action with high-speed shooting at 3 frames per second[2]. Low light subjects can be captured with minimal noise and without resorting to using a flash thanks to a sensitive ISO range of 100 – 6400, and the fast, accurate nine-point autofocus (AF) system ensures the subject is in focus no matter where they may stand in the frame. The EOS 1100D also uses the same iFCL metering system developed for the semi-professional EOS 7D, ensuring all subjects are well-exposed, even in the most challenging lighting conditions.

The EOS 1100D will be available with a new addition to Canon’s range of EF lenses. The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II is a new kit lens that offers EOS 1100D users the flexibility to shoot everything from sweeping landscapes to portraits. A lightweight construction means it’s easy to carry, and Canon’s acclaimed optical Image Stabilization offers a 4-stop advantage to ensure sharp images at maximum zoom and when shooting in low light. The new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II will succeed the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS in Canon’s current lens portfolio.

Google Introducing the Android Market Website

Over the past two years, developers around the world have helped make Android Market the go-to place for more than 100,000 apps, games and widgets. Previously, you could only access Android Market directly from your device, but today, we are introducing the Android Market website that lets you browse and search for great apps right from your web browser.

The website makes it easy to discover great new apps with a bigger, brighter interface. You can also send apps directly to your Android device with just a few clicks—no wires needed. We’ve built in new social features, too. You can share apps with your friends through Twitter. And you can read and post app reviews directly to Android Market from the web or from your device.

And what about all those apps you’ve already purchased and downloaded? Sign in to the website with your Google account and click “My Market Account” to see all the apps you’ve purchased or downloaded. It makes managing all your apps quite easy.

The Android Market website was officially unveiled today during an event at Google headquarters where we showcased Honeycomb (Android 3.0), our latest Android release built from the ground up for tablets. Honeycomb has a completely redesigned user interface, with more interactive notifications and widgets, improved multi-tasking, and the latest and greatest Google Mobile services optimized for tablets.

Netgear unveils wireless for the post-PC era - aimed at homes stuffed with internet TVs and tablets!

Netgear has unveiled a series of new products at CES that are designed for the growing number of non-PC devices being added to home networks.

The company announced eight new products, most of which are tailored towards delivering high-definition video to internet-enabled TVs and mobile devices.

Netgear's CEO and founder, Patrick Lo, said the days of PCs dominating home networking were over. "This year is the tipping point," he said. "Before we were primarily connecting PCs, now we're primarily connecting mobile and internet devices. The technical requirement is totally different."

Several of the company's new devices are designed to deliver simultaneous HD streams to different devices in the home. The 3DHD Wireless Home Theatre Network Kit, for example, will deliver three "jitter-free" 1080p streams without wires, according to the company. It sports four receivers and transmitters (4x4 MIMO) to deliver the HD content to devices such as tablets, internet TVs and PCs in different rooms.

The company claimed that one of the biggest problems with internet TVs is that they demand wired Ethernet connections, but the home's main router isn't in the living room with the television.

Consequently, it's released a Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender, which not only "effectively doubles your Wi-Fi range" when placed at the edge of your existing router's coverage, but also sports an Ethernet port that can be used for devices such as those wire-only internet TVs. The Range Extender works with any wireless router, and is a compact unit that simply plugs into a wall power socket.

Netgear's also updated its range of powerline networking products, including what it claims is the first 500Mbits/sec powerline adapter with four ports - the HomePlug-certified Internet Adapter for Home Theatre. Meanwhile, the N300 Wireless Router with Powerline AV combines both Wi-Fi and powerline networking for users who want the best of both worlds.

For users looking to back-up all of this HD content swilling around their home network, the ReadyNAS Ultra 2 Home Media Server will co-ordinate backups from every PC in the home, as well as acting as a DLNA-certified home server.

NEW Kyocera Mita Workgroup Colour Printers deliver Environmental Advantages!

KYOCERA MITA UK today launched two A4 ECOSYS colour printers with a strong focus on reducing environmental impact. The FS-C5150DN and FS-C5250DN benefit from ergonomic design and a small physical footprint, making them ideal for busy offices where space is at a premium. Both devices incorporate KYOCERA MITA’s low waste, economical ECOSYS technology, plus integrated accounting and application based profiling features, ensuring that they are a sound investment for any organisation.

Environmental performance was a key focus area during the development of the new printers. Power consumption has been significantly reduced in comparison with the preceding models, leading to an attractively low TEC rating which is an important factor for organisations aiming to lower their energy consumption. Both devices utilise positively charged rollers which prevent ozone generation in operation, while noise generation has been significantly reduced thanks to enhancements to the drum engine and paper transportation system. This allows the devices to be sited conveniently close to user workstations without the distraction of excessive operation noise or emissions.

The FS-C5150DN and FS-C5250DN support application based profiling. The KX printer driver can be configured to stipulate that jobs from specific applications, for example, email, are printed according to a predefined print policy such as mandatory duplex and mono-only output. This reduces toner and paper consumption. The new printers also benefit from integrated accounting functionality, with 100 department codes that can be allocated to users to improve accountability for print volumes and assist with cost reduction initiatives.

Steve Mitchell, Group Product Manager at KYOCERA MITA commented: “When developing these printers we focused heavily on enhancing environmental performance, usability and output quality. By incorporating technology and functionality from our higher end devices we have created two products that succeed in all three areas while still maintaining our customary emphasis on cost-effective printing.”

The FS-C5150DN and FS-C5250DN deliver crisp 600dpi quality documents at 21 and 26ppm respectively, which combines with a short warm up time of approx. 29-32 seconds and fast first page of only 9 - 12 seconds to provide users with fast access to their printed output.

NEC and Lenovo agree joint PC venture!

Japan's NEC and China's Lenovo, two of the world's largest personal computer makers, have announced an agreement to establish a joint venture in Japan.

Lenovo will take a 51% stake in NEC Lenovo Japan Group, with NEC taking the remaining 49%. NEC will receive $175m (£110m) through an issue of Lenovo shares.

In a joint statement, the two companies said the deal would give them "enhanced product portfolios and expanded distribution channels".

Under the terms of the deal, Hideyo Takasu, currently president of NEC Personal Products, will become president and chief executive of the new venture. Roderick Lappin, currently president of Lenovo Japan, will become executive chairman. The two brand names will continue to be used.

Lenovo and NEC have also agreed to discuss further co-operation in other areas, including selling PCs and developing new devices such as tablets. The deal is expected to be signed by 30 June.

"The agreement with NEC is a perfect fit for our strategy," said Lenovo's chief executive Yang Yuanqing.

"It reinforces our commitment to our core PC business while, at the same time, providing important new opportunities for growth in Japan."

Nobuhiro Endo, president of NEC, said: "Lenovo is the right partner at the right time for NEC, and we believe that we are creating a strategic relationship today that will benefit NEC and our customers for many years to come".

Ultimate Portable Entertainment is Coming with the NEW Sony PSP2! Debuting in 2011!

Sony Computer Entertainment introduces the next generation portable entertainment system that will make its debut in 2011.

On 27 January 2011 at a specially convened press conference in Tokyo, Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) announced its next generation portable entertainment system (code name: NGP), which delivers the ultimate portable entertainment experience.

NGP will arrive at the end of 2011 and is designed to offer unparalleled interactive entertainment that only PlayStation can deliver. This new system offers a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context, made possible by maximising SCE's experience from both PSP and PlayStation 3.

Deep and immersive gaming is at the core of the PlayStation DNA, and NGP is the latest embodiment of this vision. By having both Wireless and 3G network connectivity, together with various applications, NGP will enable infinite possibilities for users to connect, share and play with friends wherever they are.

The device includes a range of features that provide a genuinely cutting-edge, next generation, ultimate portable entertainment experience, such as:

Stunning OLED and Revolutionary User Interface
NGP incorporates a beautiful multi touch, 5-inch organic light emitting display (OLED) as the front display. A high performance CPU / GPU combined with OLED enables rich, visually striking graphics never seen before on a portable entertainment system, for both games and other digital entertainment content. The new system also incorporates a unique multi touch pad on the rear, and together with the front touch display, NGP offers new gameplay allowing users to interact directly with games in three dimension-like motion, through "touch, grab, trace, push and pull" hand movements.

Super Oval Design and Dual Analog Sticks
While succeeding the basic design philosophy of PSP, NGP adopts the Super Oval Design form factor, created to fit comfortably in users' hands. For the first time, a portable entertainment system will feature two analog sticks, which enable a wider range of genres to be brought into the world of portable videogaming.

LiveArea™
Every game title for NGP will be provided with a space called LiveArea™ where users can share the fun and excitement with other players. Users will have access to the latest information on games from developers and publishers via PlayStation Network. Additionally, NGP users will be able to view an Activity log that is constantly updated with accomplishments from users who are playing the same game, which can trigger active real time communication among users.

Near
SCE will also provide location-based services on NGP as part of the basic features utilising PlayStation Network. The new application called Near, developed specifically for this service and the network, will be pre-installed on the system to let users find out what their friends in the vicinity are playing right now or what they were playing recently. Users can meet their friends and new players virtually, regardless of what games they are playing, simply by sharing their game information across the dimensions of time and distance.

New Game Medium
NGP adopts a new game medium, a small, flash memory based card, dedicated for NGP software titles. Taking advantage of the flash memory feature, this innovative card can store full software titles plus add-on game content or game save data. By adopting a flash memory based card solution, SCE will be able to provide game cards with higher capacity in the future, allowing developers to store more game data to deliver rich and immersive games.

NGP will also come equipped with two cameras, one on the front and one on the rear of the system, as well as three motion sensors, gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass, all of which are designed to enable users to enjoy a world of entertainment that is linked with real life experiences.

PlayStation®Suite (PS Suite), announced at the same time as NGP, will also closely co-ordinate with NGP. The newly developed and released game content for Android based portable devices can also be enjoyed on NGP. As a result, users will have access to not only the most leading-edge content, but also some of the more casual experiences that typify the mobile market place.

Intel Teams with will.i.am, Black Eyed Peas Front Man

He’s best known for being a multi-platinum music artist, producer and front man for The Black Eyed Peas, but will.i.am is also an innovator, technology fan, entrepreneur and philanthropist. With today’s announcement at the Anaheim Convention Center, the seven-time Grammy winner has added another title to his multi-faceted resume: “director of creative innovation.”

As an extension of his insatiable fascination with technology, which plays a significant role in his professional and personal lives, will.i.am will engage in a multi-year, hands-on creative and technology collaboration with Intel Corporation. He already sports an Intel ID badge, which he proudly showed off at a news conference in Anaheim, where Intel is holding an internal sales and marketing conference.

“Nearly everything I do involves processors and computers, and when I see an Intel chip I think of all the creative minds involved that help to amplify my own creativity,” said will.i.am. “Teaming up with the scientists, researchers and computer programmers at Intel to collaborate and co-develop new ways to communicate, create, inform and entertain is going to be amazing.”

Added Deborah Conrad, Intel vice president and chief marketing officer: “We’re thrilled to tap into the limitless creativity will.i.am brings to the table. He’s not only a brilliant artist and producer, but also an innovator pushing the bounds of technology professionally and personally. We share a strong interest in innovation around music, art and lifestyle, and are excited to join forces to establish an authentic, emotional connection with consumers.”

The relationship ties in with Intel’s “compute continuum” vision, in which more and more devices will compute and connect to the Internet, and the company’s “visual life” initiative that explores how visual experiences such as photos, videos and movies are redefining the relationship consumers have with laptops, smart phones, tablets and other devices.

In his unique role, will.i.am will collaborate with Intel on many creative and technology endeavors across the “compute continuum” that may include such devices as laptops, smart phones and tablets. Complementing his visionary role as the front man for The Black Eyed Peas, will.i.am is also already working on music expressly for Intel.

Specifics haven’t been disclosed, but Conrad said that the partnership between will.i.am and Intel is the marrying of two worlds -- entertainment and technology -- in order to create what she calls “the ultimate experience.”

“Intel is in the midst of transforming the way we communicate with people,” Conrad said. “Our partnership with will.i.am is a prime example of how we want to convey and deliver the Intel experience. It’s imperative that Intel and our innovations are kept in front of the global youth culture that embraces new devices and new forms of communication and entertainment.”

Open Planet Ideas: Sony and WWF announce final idea in crowd-sourcing initiative!

The winning concept will now be brought to life by its creator and Sony’s R&D team!

After three months of concepting, collaboration and evaluation, Sony and WWF have today announced that the GreenBook concept by Paul Frigout has been selected as the final concept to be taken through to realisation from the innovative community platform, Open Planet Ideas.

Reinventing community activism to attract the Facebook generation, ‘GreenBook’ is a cross platform software application. Geo-location and social gaming techniques are used to create a new method of informal, 'flash mob' volunteering, where friends locate each other and congregate to work together on short tasks. Individuals can post their needs and offer their services, as well as make donations, sign e-petitions, get information, win rewards for participation and share their stories.

The decision was made after the expert panel investigated the shortlisted three entries, consulting with the creators and considering technical feasibility and potential for impact. Other shortlisted concepts included The Identifying & Recording Wildlife concept and the Network of Real-time Wireless Micro Weather Stations for Microclimate Monitoring.

Paul Frigout, also known as ‘Siniuc’ in the digital world, will now have the once in a lifetime chance to realise his concept working with Sony Europe’s R&D and design teams, WWF experts and members of the IDEO creative team.

Morgan David, head of Sony’s Broadcast & Professional Research Labs and member of the Open Planet Ideas expert panel, said: “We chose this idea because of its huge potential to bring people together and motivate participation. We believe GreenBook will breathe new life into the age old concept of volunteering through the application of cutting edge social technology. “

Jean-Paul Jeanrenaud, Corporate Relations Director at WWF International said: “We feel this is an exciting concept that will enable people to come together to support and give their time and energy to their local area and address some of the key environmental challenges that we are facing today.”

The intention is to develop and pilot the software with third parties and release it as a ‘white label’ application for any organisation to use. Initial feedback from volunteering organisations has already been very positive. For example volunteering charity TimeBank, welcomed the ‘Greenbank’ concept.

CEO of TimeBank Helen Walker, said: “At TimeBank we are committed to exploring ways of engaging new audiences in volunteering. This concept takes advantage of the increasing use of smart phones and the techniques used in social gaming to engage with a new generation of volunteers. This use of cutting edge, social networking technology could be a powerful tool to enable volunteering to become part of the fabric of everyday life, anywhere in the world.”

Open Planet Ideas received over 400 innovative concepts from budding designers across the world, all hoping their idea would be selected by the project’s panel of experts, as ‘the most innovative new way to use existing technology to help preserve our planet’s natural resources’.

With its hand-detection sensor, the Logitech Wireless Mouse M515 is active only when you’re gripping it — the mouse is only active when you want it to be, and it stays asleep when you don’t. A sealed bottom — so fabric fuzz won’t collect in the sensor opening — gives you cursor control no matter what surface you’re using your mouse on. And the easy-gliding base makes mousing around on couches (and blankets, cushions, clothing, carpets, even desks) easy. Also featuring effortless Logitech® Hyper-Fast Scrolling, the M515 mouse lets you coast smoothly through long blogs or social networking feeds. And you can switch to click-to-click mode when you need more control.

Logitech’s newest mouse also offers up to two years of battery life, helping you save time and money by eliminating the need to change batteries frequently. And, you’ll enjoy plug-and-forget wireless connectivity thanks to the tiny Logitech® Unifying receiver. The receiver stays in your laptop so it’s less likely to be lost, and gives you a reliable connection with virtually no delays or dropouts. Plus, you can easily add other Unifying-compatible mice and keyboards to the same receiver.

Acer expands the projector line up with the U5200 ultra-short throw model!

Developed to meet the needs of education and bring into the classroom new ways of teaching and learning, the new Acer U5200 projector provides an easy to use solution so that teachers can focus on the lesson.

With this projector, Acer takes a step further in helping educators improving the learning process providing them with innovative, flexible and versatile solutions.

The key features that are most important for schools have now been integrated into the new Acer U5200 projector, such as LAN control, display over USB, Ultra-Short Throw projection to help creating a compelling learning environment.

Specifically developed for the school segment, the U5200 features advanced mirror-reflection type of ultra-short throw projection, allowing to display large images even if it is placed very close to the screen. At a distance of just 13cm sharp and accurate images can be displayed with a diagonal of up to 195.6 cm (77”). This feature offers several benefits. With the projector so close to the screen, there is no shadowing effect and presenters can avoid projector beams in the eyes, plus it maximizes space as it can be used even in small rooms and still project large images. As a result the U5200 offers greater flexibility and maximum viewing comfort, making it ideal for education.

The Acer U5200 comes complete with network management tools. In fact, it is totally compliant with the Crestron Network System, offering control of the projector via LAN. This solution offers several powerful capabilities, including monitoring, remote power on/off (may be scheduled), remote projection management, multiple-projector control, emergency text broadcasting, online dialogue with the system administrator and e-mail alert system, etc. In addition, Remote desktop function allows users to remotely access any PC which is activated via the Acer eProjection utility and connected to the projector via LAN. By simply connecting a keyboard and mouse to the projectors users can access a PC located in another room.

This projector has a number of features designed to increase flexibility. The simple to set-up optional USB wireless adapter lets you connect and display presentations and video with no need of cables (featuring wireless projection and control). The MobiShow allows to project any type of content, video or Power Point slides from Wi-Fi enabled smartphones or PDAs. The USB Slide Show offers the capability to display photos or slide shows directly from a USB flash drive, so that the projector can work even without a PC. Plus, a low noise level ensures clearer audio during presentations and entertainment.

The Acer U5200 can also transform any lesson into an incredible 3D experience. The three-dimensional experience is made possible by DLP 3D Ready technology that, using high (120 Hz) refresh rates, can transform the flat surface of the room wall into a 3D screen. This solution unlocks endless possibilities for engaging learning: exploring the incredible human anatomy; the universe in 3D detail or touring famous archaeological sites.

The quality of images is warranted by top-class technologies designed to enhance colour accuracy and sharpness. The U5200 reproduces images with more natural and balanced shades, achieving truly lifelike tones, thanks to Acer ColorBoost II+ featuring an optimised 6-segment colour wheel design, a powerful image processor and an advanced lamp waveform to improve colour performance. Colour brightness is enhanced and automatically adapted to the displayed content with the aid of Acer eView Management.

Over time, projectors can be affected by colour decay that adds a yellowish or greenish shade to the images on screen. Now Acer’s projectors take advantage of ColorSafe II, DLP® technology and Acer unique colour compensation technology on the optical components to ensure picture integrity even after prolonged use, making them virtually immune to colour decay.

Two HDMI™ ports provide seamless connection to the latest digital sources ensuring exceptional high-definition viewing. The advanced lamp technology with illumination of up to 2500 ANSI lumens a 4200:1 contrast ratio and native XGA resolution help bringing a new level of brightness, colour and clarity to the images.

Thanks to the wall-colour compensation feature, the projector can display accurate images even on coloured surfaces. The user simply has to choose the wall colour in the OSD menu, and the projector intelligently compensates the colour of the displayed image. Any distortion is easily fixed with the 40° Vertical Keystone Correction; as a result, the projected image is perfectly rectangular no matter where the projector is placed, offering greater flexibility. What’s more, the U5200 features the Acer Top-loading Lamp design, to easily change the lamp module even when the projector is mounted on the ceiling.

Up to 5000 hours of lamp life save lamp replacement costs ensuring long-term dependable projector use. The extended lifespan and consistent image quality lower the total cost of ownership and translate to big savings. Further savings are ensured by the innovative DLP chip, enabling a filter-free design for lower maintenance and operating costs. Moreover, the U5200 comes with Acer EcoProjection, an environment friendly management solution that reduces standby power consumption by up to 80%. The projector automatically enters ECO mode if there isn’t any input signal for 5 minutes, with up to 20% additional power savings and automatically performs a safety shutdown if it does not receive input for a certain time. Also included in the Acer EcoProjection suite is Acer ePower Management, a tool that lets you create customised power-saving configurations.

To improve ease-of-use, Acer projectors are equipped with Empowering Technology, a suite of tools designed to simplify access to simple setup, viewing and timer utilities, making you more productive and helping get the right message across first time.

Acer U5200 video-projector comes with 5 years warranty on the DLP chip and 1 year warranty on the lamp without hour limit.

The Synology DS411J 4 Bay NAS has been awarded the 'A-List' Award from PC Pro!

The Synology DSSynology’s range of NAS devices reach right into the business-class stratosphere, but the DiskStation DS411j is altogether more modest. With four disk bays, Synology’s excellent DiskStation Manager 3.0 front-end and a host of features, the DS411j has its sights set on your home network.

The installation process is as straightforward as ever. Undo the four thumbscrews at the rear and the rear panel folds down to give access to four plastic caddies inside. After fastening a drive to a caddy with the supplied screws, and slotting it in, the device is ready to go.

LEDs on the front fascia make it easy to check the device’s status at a glance, and, importantly, indicate whether a particular drive has failed. Look to the device’s rear, and two USB ports – for sharing hard drives or printers – sit alongside one Gigabit Ethernet port.

We installed a single 1TB drive for our testing, but up to four 3TB drives are supported, and thanks to Synology’s Hybrid RAID, adding extra drives is simple. The DS411j automatically switches to the most suitable RAID mode as extra drives are added. Synology’s software guides users through the steps required to upload the operating system, and the whole process takes around ten minutes.

Once installed, DiskStation Manager 3.0 is impressively slick. The web-based user interface looks more akin to a swish Linux desktop, and thanks to multi-tasking support, allows you to peruse menus and adjust settings as other changes complete in the background. The search function, meanwhile, makes it gloriously easy to find the menu option you need.

The sheer wealth of features is staggering. The DS411j is capable of hosting websites, blogs and photo galleries; serving up media via the DLNA and UPnP-compliant media server; streaming audio and photos to iOS and Android-powered smartphones; the list goes on and on. Synology’s Data Replicator 3 software makes light work of backup too.

The final feather in the DS411j cap is its performance. Even with a single 1TB drive, the DS411j read and wrote large files at 66.8MB/sec and 38.1MB/sec respectively. Small files proved more of a challenge, but read and write speeds of 5.6MB/sec and 10MB/sec are very good.

The DS411j doesn’t come cheap, but there’s no question that it’s worth every penny. Its combination of simplicity, expandability, useful features and great performance see it take pride of place on our A List.

Lenovo Creates New Mobile Internet Business Group to Focus on Tablets, Smartphones and Smart TVs

Lenovo today announced it is establishing a new business group, the Mobile Internet and Digital Home Business Group (MIDH), responsible for creating mobile Internet-focused devices, including tablets and smartphones, as well as devices for new categories like cloud computing, smart TV and the digital home. The group will be responsible for developing services and applications that will fuel these next generation “convergence” devices.

Liu Jun, formerly senior vice president and president of Lenovo’s Product Group, will lead the new group as president. He is based at the company’s China headquarters in Beijing. The company has promoted Peter Hortensius, formerly head of its Think Product Group, to president of its Product Group. He is based at Lenovo’s U.S. headquarters in Raleigh, NC.

“Lenovo recognizes the tremendous growth potential of the mobile internet, as well as that of new categories like cloud computing and smart TV, and so we are putting the focus and investments in place to fully capitalize on these opportunities to drive growth in our business today and for many years to come,” said Yang Yuanqing, chief executive officer, Lenovo. “The Mobile Internet and Digital Home Business Group will help us leverage our leadership in the PC arena to create a rich portfolio of Internet-centric devices. At the same time, we’ll use our creativity, innovation and technical prowess to help our customers navigate the future of personal technology worldwide.”

Mobile Internet Products Gain Momentum

The first – the world’s thinnest mobile hard drive – has a height of just 10mm, while Freecom’s other models are both standard-sized mobile hard drives; the difference between them being that one comes with the added benefit of FireWire 800 technology.

In addition to being incredibly strong and durable, the magnesium casing can easily be recycled – making it both practical and environmentally-friendly.
