Kyocera colour devices win BLI Summer "Pick" Awards

The world’s leading authority on document imaging devices, Buyers Laboratory Inc. (BLI) today announced the winners of its Summer 2011 “Picks” in the critical colour printer and printer MFP categories, with two of the awards going to Kyocera. Presented twice each year, BLI’s “Pick” awards acknowledge the devices that are the best of the best and clearly stand above their respective peers.

After BLI analysts and editors spent months evaluating lab test data in such critical performance areas as reliability, image quality, ease of use and cost of ownership, the following models were selected by BLI as a“Pick” winner:

Kyocera FS-C5250DN - Outstanding A4 Colour Printer for Mid-Size Workgroups
Kyocera FS-C2126MFP+ Outstanding A4 Color MFP for Small Workgroups

Robust Features Earn Kyocera “Pick” Award
Reliability, productivity and a robust feature set have won a “Pick” for the Kyocera FS-C5250DN in the mid-size workgroup category. “In the test that is one of the most key indicators of real-world performance, the FS-C5250DN’s performance was at the top of its class, clearly proving this printer can handle just about anything workgroups will throw at it,” said David Sweetnam, who heads BLI’s European research and lab services. “High memory and paper capacities, loads of standard security features and long-life consumables make this unit that much more attractive.”

“The 26-ppm Kyocera FS-C2126MFP+ demonstrated impeccable reliability in BLI’s two-month lab evaluation, with not a single misfeed occurring during its 32,500-impression durability test, and no service calls required,” said Sweetnam. This device comes equipped with an RADF and a USB port that allows for direct printing of files from a flash drive. “The unit’s first-page-out times and first-copy out times were well above average, and its first-page time from energy-save mode is one of the fastest in its class. The ‘+’ model’s LED light source for scanning makes it even more energy-efficient, so users can be environmentally responsible without losing productivity.”

Kyocera Mita Product Manager Steve Mitchell comments: “Reliability in the real world is one of the key selling points of the Kyocera range, so we are delighted that BLI has singled out this feature as a compelling benefit of both the FS-C5250DN and FS-C2126MFP+. We aim to make colour functionality easily accessible and highly cost-effective for our customers, and winning these coveted awards proves that we are achieving our ambition.”

Chip Shot: Ultrabooks = No Compromise

Intel is empowering a new breed of no-compromise computers, called Ultrabooks which will increasingly combine best-in-class performance, improved responsiveness and security in thin, elegant form factors. The notion of ‘one-size-fits-all’ computing is out of place in today’s increasingly fast-paced world; and consumers are demanding more functionality packaged in sleek packages at mainstream prices.

Timely Tweets: Now easier to see

We all go to Twitter to connect with the latest information on the topics and people we care about. So when we decide to follow a favorite brand, business or charitable organization, we expect to be among the first to get a special announcement, access to exclusive content or a great offer.

That's why starting today, Twitter are introducing a way to ensure that the most important Tweets from the organizations you follow reach you directly, by placing them at or near the top of your timeline. These Promoted Tweets will scroll through the timeline like any other Tweet, and like regular Tweets, they will appear in your timeline just once. Promoted Tweets can also be easily dismissed from your timeline with a single click.

Twitter will be rolling out and testing this new offering over the next several weeks with a select group of partners, including Best Western, Dell, Gatorade, Groupon, HBO, JetBlue, LivingSocial, Microsoft Xbox, Red Bull, Sephora, Starbucks, Summit Entertainment’s “50/50”, TNT and Virgin America among others — with more to come soon. During this phase, you may also see Promoted Tweets in your timeline from non-profit organizations you follow, including charity: water, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Room to Read, The American Red Cross and Water.org.

From the start, Twitter's philosophy around advertising has been simple: We put our users first and strive to create products that enrich the Twitter experience for every Twitter user. We’re excited about this next step and look forward to your feedback.

MacBook Air Sets New Notebook Standard

With the release of the latest 13-inch MacBook, Apple has once again reduced the number of factors users have to consider when purchasing a laptop computer.

There was a time when you went shopping for a laptop that you would have to consider all the things you wanted to do with the machine and eliminate models based on those criteria. Things like having enough power to record music or process a mix are a thing of the past.
All of Apple’s laptops are powerful enough to do all of those things these days. The only real consideration left is the screen size you want.

I chose the 13-inch MacBook Air. I have, and love, the last generation 11-inch model, but the screen was a bit small for my taste. I thought the 13-inch might do everything it did and give me the screen real estate that I wanted. I was right.

I’ve been using the 13-inch Air since last Friday, doing all of my day-to-day work on it. The machine was comfortable as soon as I turned it on. I didn’t force myself to use it for a week to see how it worked, I wanted to keep using it.

My main laptop when at home is a 17-inch MacBook Pro, so you may think that it was a big change when I started using the 13-inch. In fact, it wasn’t. The size of the keyboard and ample screen resolution made the switch pretty easy.

What the smaller screen did do was make me use gestures more on the 13-inch. Scrolling through Web sites and even navigating left or right are now done using gestures. I didn’t see the full benefit of gestures until now, but I don’t know what I’d do without them now.

The battery life is amazing too. I sat outside working most of the day on Friday on a single charge. That work consists of writing and posting stories on the Web, working with images, and other small tasks, but that’s what most of us do on a regular basis. I’m impressed enough with the battery, that I don’t really think about unplugging it and working somewhere other than my office.

Of course, the MacBook comes with Thunderbolt, a new I/O technology that’s available in many Apple computers now. Thunderbolt can handle everything from displays to high-speed peripheral devices on a single connection. I don’t have any devices yet, but as a musician, I can’t wait to try some out.

Speaking of music. One of the final tests I did with the 13-inch MacBook was with music recording. I figured if anything was going to trip up the Air, it would be recording my guitar into it.

Latency for a musician is enough to kill a session. In other words, if you strum your guitar and the computer can’t process the audio fast enough to output in real-time, you get a delay in hearing what you played. It’s like watching a movie and the audio track isn’t synced with the video.

I used the Apogee Duet 2 as my audio interface, plugged it into the MacBook Air, plugged in my guitar and launched GarageBand. With absolutely no configuration, I was recording my guitar in GarageBand with zero (or near zero) latency.

I added some drum tracks to the project, switched amps in the middle of the song, added effects and did pretty much everything else I could think of to make the MacBook Air flinch under the pressure.

It handled everything I could throw at it and never missed a beat. Now that is what I want out of a laptop.

With OS X Lion pre-installed, the MacBook Air gives users Apple’s latest hardware, including some of the industries fastest technologies and the most modern operating system on the market today.

The 13-inch MacBook Air is the computer that all other laptops will be measured against. It has power, portability, and a sleek design that is only matched by other MacBooks.

New 7” Wide Viewing Angle WVGA LCD for indoor and outdoor use

The Japanese technology corporation Kyocera, a leading manufacturer in the field of electronic devices, is extending its LCD product range by adding a new 7-inch wide viewing angle WVGA module.

Kyocera’s new 7-inch LCD features WVGA resolution, long-life LED backlighting with low power consumption and up to 70,000 hours of operating time, and a viewing angle of 170 degrees, which covers the needs of medical and industrial-use applications. Combined with these features is Kyocera’s ability to provide reliable delivery and long-term availability of the product.

Thanks to these benefits, the LCD is ideal for use in industrial and medical applications. An 18-bit RGB connection guarantees easy installation.

Kyocera is actively engaged in the development of environmentally friendly products and strives to reduce the use of environmentally harmful materials and processes in industry fields. The company complies with the EU RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive.

Research Shows IT Problems Heating Up for Small Businesses This Summer

According to a recent HP survey of more than 500 IT managers at small businesses across the United States, 93 percent of companies have placed cost concerns over the best IT solutions, leading 89 percent of those companies to experience IT-related problems.

The study, conducted by Wakefield Research,(1) uncovered that the top three IT problems reported by cost-conscious companies are low-performing hardware (46 percent), out-of-date hardware (37 percent) and unreliable hardware (23 percent), leading to suboptimal computing efficiency and an overall loss of productivity.

The survey also revealed that 54 percent of small businesses cite summer as the peak season for working remotely. With 58 percent of IT managers stating that they have not invested in network security this year, companies will find they are adding pressure and potentially greater security risks to their already stressed IT networks.

Other key survey findings include:
Computer processing speed (35 percent) and reliability (19 percent) top IT managers’ lists for most needed computer improvements. These practical considerations weigh more heavily on managers’ minds than energy efficiency (9 percent).
When given the chance to tell their chief executive officers how to solve common concerns, IT managers recommend upgrading to newer and better quality components (29 percent), investing more money into IT systems (21 percent), and spending more time planning and researching the best solutions for their company’s needs (13 percent).
Forty-one percent of IT managers think that planning their company’s IT strategy is the best use of their time, compared to 11 percent of managers who believe their time is best spent on hardware support.
One-fifth of IT managers complained that their biggest computer problem is a lack of vendor assistance when problems occur.

“The survey findings confirm that budget-constrained small businesses are playing tug of war when it comes to balancing smart IT purchasing decisions and their budgets,” says Stephen DiFranco, senior vice president and general manager, Personal Systems Group – Americas, HP. “HP has a portfolio of reliable, high-performing and secure Elite Series PCs that are business tough and tested to the extremes to ensure small businesses get a great return on investment and thrive in the market.”

To help small businesses overcome these IT and productivity challenges, HP offers the HP Elite Series PCs, which offer high-speed performance from Intel® Core™ processors, long battery life, optimized security through HP ProtectTools and 24/7 dedicated customer support. HP Elite PCs also undergo the HP Total Test Process to guarantee the highest levels of reliability and durability. As part of the process, they endure more than100,000 hours of testing, including rigorous military standards testing(2) in temperatures ranging from negative 20 degrees to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, as well as drops, shocks, pounds and shakes.

Small businesses can rely on products such as the HP TouchSmart 9300 Elite and HP Compaq 8200 Elite desktop PCs and HP EliteBook p- and w-series notebook PCs to overcome everyday business computing challenges.

HP is dedicated to providing small businesses the highest level of support through its channels partners. The company recently launched the HP Elite Smart Buys Program to ensure its small and medium-sized business customers receive premium technology and customer support at an everyday HP Smart Buy price. HP also is offering an Elite Service promotion with its Value Added Resellers to allow for better pricing on deployment, management and other key services to provide customers with the best return on their investment and keep their employees productive and efficient.

“With HP’s Elite program, we can provide the customer the best product in the industry with our services at a lower total cost to the customer,” says Shaun Steel, general manager at Valcom, an HP Elite partner based in Salt Lake City, Utah. “Valcom has seen great response from SMB customers.”

Storing data in the cloud…I feel safer already by Seagate!

If you are uncertain when it comes to putting any of your data in the cloud, just read this.

Dan Rowinski of Read Write Web wrote a piece titled “How Does Google Protect Your Data in The Cloud?” that is a great summary of the steps Google goes through to protect your data.
Step 1: Around the clock guards – no one gets in or out with any data
Step 2: Intensive employee background checks – no one with an ounce of shady-ness gets a job
Step 3: Turn data into a huge puzzle - nothing sits in one place, its broken up into a bazillion pieces
Step 4: Mix it up – files names are completely random, making it close to impossible for a hacker to find what their looking for.
Step 5: Customize – the servers are custom Linux based making them more difficult for a hacker to navigate.
Step 6: Erase all doubt – should a drive need to be replaced, it’s crushed then shredded to a point you would not even know it was a drive.
Step 7: Test, test, and test again – Each quarter, hackers are asked to test the system…try to get in.
Step 8: Satisfy and Certify – Have the data centers tested and validated in accordance with the Federal Information Security Management Act
Step 9: Never use the data – Only the owner of the data can use it…Google can see it, but never reads it.
Step 10: Don’t erase it, just break it – If you ever want to remove data from the cloud, Google breaks the string that links all the puzzle pieces together. Just as safe as erasing the drive all together, and much more cost effective.
(Step 11): Rinse and Repeat. Correct and Improve.

I don’t know about you, but I feel safer already being an avid user of Gmail, Google Docs, Calendar, Chat, Reader, etc.

What’s the most important thing you keep on Google’s cloud?

Introducing the Smart and Easy 14.1-Megapixel Panasonic LUMIX DMC-LS5 featuring O.I.S. The New DMC-LS5

Taking pictures has never been so simple as Panasonic introduces the new 14.1-megapixel LUMIX DMC-LS5 featuring a high quality 26mm wide angle lens with 5x optical zoom (35mm camera equiv. 26-130mm) plus Optical Image Stabilizer (O.I.S) and Intelligent Auto mode.

Offering superb image quality the 14.1-megapixel LS5 benefits from a high quality 26mm wide angle LUMIX DC VARIO lens with F2.8 brightness, helping to capture clear images even in dimly lit situations.

The most frequent cause of mis-shot is handshake, and that is why O.I.S. is central to all LUMIX cameras. The O.I.S. is renowned for its high correction performance against blur caused by a hand-shake and compensates effectively without deterioration of image quality.

In addition to O.I.S, the popular and powerful shooting assist mode iA (Intelligent Auto) also helps users to utilise other convenient features – Intelligent Scene Selector automatically selects whichever of 5 Scene Modes -- Macro, Portrait, Scenery, Night Portrait, Night Scenery -- that best suits the shooting situation. Human faces are captured in focus with appropriate exposure and with Face Detection the camera can also correct unwanted red-eye digitally.

The new LS5 can also record stunning HD movie in 1280 x 720p at a smooth 30 fps and thanks to bundled software, PHOTOfunSTUDIO, video and photo memories can easily be shared via Facebook or YouTube.

Running on AA batteries, the DMC-LS5 offers any entry-level user comfort and satisfaction a step above. Pursuing ultimate ease of operation, functions are simplified but the LS5 still performs to the high standards expected from a LUMIX compact camera.

With AF tracking, the FZ48 can lock onto any subject and keep it in focus even if it moves – making it easy to get beautiful, clear shots. The Intelligent Scene Selector automatically switches to the appropriate mode according to the subject. The Intelligent ISO Control reduces motion blur by adjusting the ISO sensitivity and optimizing the shutter speed if the subject moves as the shot is taken. Intelligent D-range Control optimises the lighting of each part of an image, preventing blocked shadows and blown highlights. These features can all be accessed simply by activating the iA mode, giving users the confidence to capture clear, beautiful, mistake-free photos with ease.

All new memories in 3D

The newly added 3D Photo mode produces a realistic 3D image from 20 consecutive images shot whilst panning left to right. The 3D image can be viewed on VIERA 3D HDTV or other MPO-compatible 3D equipment such as TV, Digital Photo Frame or Printing.

Symantec Finds Enterprises That Are Not Preserving Social Networking Business Content Risk Increased Litigation Costs and Company Reputation

Symantec Corp. today announced the findings of its 2011 Social Media Protection Flash Poll which examined how organizations protect themselves from negative consequences of using social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and other online forums. The poll revealed that social media is pervasive within the enterprise, and IT departments have good reason to be worried. The typical enterprise experienced nine social media incidents, such as employees posting confidential information publicly over the past year, with 94 percent suffering negative consequences including damage to their reputations, loss of customer trust, data loss and lost revenue.

As organizations increasingly share business related information on social networks to communicate with customers, partners and employees, the risk of publishing confidential information also increases. It’s more important than ever for companies to have controls in place to capture social information to comply with open records requests, industry regulations such as the supervision requirements under the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) 10-06 amendments, and the eventuality of an eDiscovery request.

According to Gartner1 “by year-end 2013, 50 percent of all companies will have been asked to produce material from social media websites for eDiscovery.” An archiving software solution can help organizations permit employees to use social media for business purposes and enable the preservation, search and discovery of specific content from tools such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, SharePoint and blogs.

"Businesses know how important it is to protect and preserve email, IM, spreadsheets and other unstructured information. Now they need to recognize that information flowing through social networks is equally important," said Greg Muscarella, senior director of product management for Symantec's Information Management Group. "Symantec enables businesses to continue to access and share information through social networks while capturing and preserving the information for legal and compliance purposes."

The Symantec survey found 82 percent of enterprises are at least discussing implementing archiving solutions to collect, preserve and discover sensitive business information transmitted through social media, along with other measures such as establishing social media usage policies and employee training programs. However, less than one-fourth have actually implemented any of those technologies and policies.

The survey found the top three social media incidents the typical enterprise experienced over the last year were:
employees sharing too much information in public forums (46 percent),
the loss or exposure of confidential information (41%),
increased exposure to litigation (37%)

More than 90 percent of respondents who experienced a social media incident also suffered negative consequences as a result, including:
reduced stock price (average cost: $1,038,401 USD)
litigation costs (average cost: $650,361 USD)
direct financial costs (average cost: $641,993 USD)
damaged brand reputation/loss of customer trust (average cost: $638,496 USD)
lost revenue (average cost: $619,360 USD)

“This is precisely why we added the capability in Enterprise Vault 10 which will be available later this summer and will enable organizations to preserve, search and discover information on social networking sites, in addition to email and other unstructured data,” added Muscarella. “Employee education and training on the proper use of social media for business purposes is just as important as having the technology pieces in place.”

Symantec Recommendations
Like all corporate communications, define how to use social media and train employees regarding appropriate content to post
Identify and understand legal or regulatory requirements specific to your industry, and implement policies to address regulations that call for retention of social media content
Consider deploying an archiving solution that enables the automatic capture and retention of social media content, especially if your industry is highly regulated
Implement a data loss prevention solution to provide another layer of protection to prevent confidential and proprietary information from bleeding out of the company onto social networks

Symantec’s Social Media Protection Flash Poll

Symantec’s Social Media Protection Flash Poll is the result of research conducted in April 2011 by Applied Research, which surveyed IT and C-level professionals responsible for computers, networks and technology resources at small, medium, and large enterprises (defined as 1,000-2,400, 2,500-4,999, and 5,000+ employees). The report was designed to gauge how organizations protect themselves from negative consequences of using social media. The survey included 1,225 respondents in 33 countries in North America, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa), Asia Pacific, and Latin America.
