Netgear Simplifies Mobile Access, Raises Performance and Takes Pricing Leadership in Consumer Storage!

The ReadyNAS Ultra family now supports mobile apps for Apple iOS and Android devices, is more than 50 percent faster and costs as much as less.

NETGEAR®, Inc. a global networking company that delivers innovative products to consumers, businesses and service providers, today announced three new enhancements to the ReadyNAS® Ultra family of high-performance storage systems. First, new mobile apps connect smartphones and tablets to ReadyNAS Ultra systems. Second, new firmware increases performance by as much as 50 percent. Third, new pricing brings affordable Intel-powered platforms to home users for the first time.

Two new ReadyNAS Remote mobile apps seamlessly extend stored digital content to Apple iOS and Android mobile devices. This "private cloud" enables easy connections from mobile platforms to personal music, movies, photos and files stored at home. ReadyNAS users may download, upload, view and edit their content securely from across town or across the globe.

The new RAIDiator firmware version 4.2.17 increases high-definition (HD) video playback and transfer speeds by more than 50 percent in Intel® NAS Performance Toolkit testing. In addition, support for the latest 3-terabyte hard drives delivers the highest possible storage capacity.

Prices have now been lowered across the product line, shattering traditional price/performance barriers. Power users can bring Intel Atom-powered storage systems into home networks at the lowest cost ever.

Glenn Palome, a ReadyNAS owner in Holiday, Fla., uses the new Android mobile app to access files stored on his ReadyNAS system from his DROID phone and XOOM tablet. "It's as easy as opening the app and signing into ReadyNAS Remote," says Palome. "I store photos, documents and videos on my ReadyNAS and they all download to my mobile devices quickly and easily."

"Consumer NAS with remote mobile client access will continue to be an important on-premise alternative to cloud services, catering to consumers who don't trust cloud services because of security issues or don't want to add another layer of management complexity," said Pushan Rinnen, Research Director in the Data Systems Group at Gartner, Inc. "Leaders in the consumer NAS market will be those who continue to add features that keep pace with changing consumer behavior."

"Global mobile application sales grew 160 percent year-over-year. NETGEAR is committed to meeting consumer demands for remote access and home media application performance." said Tiffany Pham, Product Line Manager for Consumer Storage. "Gartner recently ranked NETGEAR as the worldwide leader in sub-$5000 storage systems based on revenue, and the ReadyNAS Ultra Family continues to bring mobility and performance at the best price on the market."

This category recognises creative communications campaigns that have actively engaged consumers and demonstrably driven sustainable behaviours.

The inaugural Guardian Sustainable Business Awards, hosted at the Guardian’s Central London headquarters, seek to establish best practice business sustainability initiatives. They aim to showcase genuine innovation in corporate sustainability and recognise and reward those who integrate sustainability to the very heart of their business.

Kyocera celebrates Green IT Magazine Awards Win!

Fs-C5250DN wins hardware product of the year at prestigious awards ceremony.

Kyocera Mita UK Ltd enjoyed a successful evening at the Green IT magazine awards on Thursday 19th May where Catalina McGregor, Green ICT liaison officer at the United Nations, presented the company with the Hardware Product of the Year for the FS-C5250DN colour printer. Kyocera also received a highly commended accolade in the Green IT Project of the Year category for its managed document service project with RSA, as well as being runner-up in the Manufacturer of the Year category.

Commenting on the win Kyocera’s Director of Brand and Reputation Tracey Rawling Church said: “We are delighted that the readers of Green IT magazine have recognised the environmental strengths of the FS-C5250DN. We strive to continuously improve the environmental performance of our products so that they complement our customers’ sustainability strategies. We are honoured that Kyocera Mita was also recognised in two further categories, which we feel demonstrates the breadth of our environmental commitment.”

Hardware product of the Year

The FS-C5250DN was launched in February 2011 with environmental performance a key focus area during the printer’s development. Power consumption is been significantly reduced in comparison with the preceding model, leading to an attractively low TEC rating. The FS-C5250DN utilises positively charged rollers which prevent ozone generation in operation, while noise generation has been significantly reduced thanks to enhancements to the drum engine and paper transportation system.

These enhancements to the environmental performance of Kyocera printers build on the ECOSYS design principle on which the company has based the development of its products since 1992. “ECOSYS” stands for ecology, economy and system and recognises the environmental and financial benefits of ensuring that technology has low waste, long life and low cost of ownership.

Highly Commended: Green IT Project of the Year

Kyocera’s project to deliver a cost-effective, productivity-enhancing and environmentally responsible managed document service for leading global insurance company RSA was highly commended by the Green IT awards judging panel. The project has delivered a reduction in print volumes of 14.9% in the first year, equating to 15 million fewer prints, in addition to significant reductions in energy consumption and waste.

Netgear Announces Worldwide Availability of the Ultimate Home DSL Gateway with Breakthrough Technology!

Delivering the first dual-core processor in a home router, the NETGEAR N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router also offers 2 USB ports, CD-less installation and an Ethernet WAN option for Fiber/Cable broadband access.

NETGEAR®, Inc., a global networking company that delivers innovative products to consumers, businesses and service providers, today announced worldwide availability of the N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router (DGND3700), the Ultimate Home DSL Gateway. The N600 Home DSL gateway brings together in one convenient, power-packed device a high-speed ADLS2+ modem plus an improved version of NETGEAR's acclaimed Ultimate Networking Machine wireless router (WNDR3700) to meet the demanding needs of today's advanced home networks.

Speed is built into the N600 Home DSL Gateway - from the ground up. With the first dual-core processor in a home router, response time is lightning-fast – even when running the most intense applications simultaneously.

Wireless range and capacity are maximized with support for simultaneous 802.11n dual band networking at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, providing two completely separate networks for data and video traffic to avoid network overcrowding and loss of data in transmission. The 5 GHz band in particular provides a less interference-prone channel suitable for streaming high-definition video and for networked gaming.

Intelligent quality of service lets consumers give priority to video streams, games and other rich-media applications for uninterrupted enjoyment, as well as giving priority to designated devices on the network.

The N600 Home DSL Gateway supports NETGEAR ReadySHARE™ technology through two USB ports, transforming standard external USB hard drives into shared storage for access by everyone on the home network. In addition, the N600 is DLNA certified, for streaming video or music from the external USB hard drive to any DLNA-complaint media player such as an Internet-enabled TV.

The N600 Home DSL Gateway is also future proof, with a separate gigabit Ethernet WAN port for connecting to either high-speed cable or fiber optic broadband modems. This gives consumers the option to keep using their same Ultimate Home DSL Gateway for cable or fiber Internet service without the need to reconfigure their home networks should they choose at some point to switch from their ADSL service.

Today's Top Launch: The Panasonic LUMIX G3: Creativity without limits! Coming soon to Okobe.co.uk...

Smaller, lighter and with outstanding image quality, the LUMIX G3 is designed to go anywhere you do

Panasonic has today launched the LUMIX G3, the world's smallest and lightest interchangeable lens system camera with a build-in Electronic View Finder. With an exceptional range of features and stunning image quality packed into a beautifully lightweight aluminum design, the LUMIX G3 turns everyday moments into works of art.

The LUMIX G3 lets you capture great photos from the very first shot. A new 16.0-megapixel sensor and light-speed autofocus gives you the exceptional image quality that was once restricted to large, heavy DSLR cameras. The intuitive automatic shooting modes and full range of advanced features, combined with high-resolution free-angle LCD touch screen or Electronic View Finder, mean you get the picture you want, how you want.

With the LUMIX G3, there really is no limit to your creativity.

The LUMIX G3 has raised the bar in interchangeable lens camera image quality. With an optimal balance of the imaging engine and sensor size, the LUMIX G3 produces exceptional image quality to take your photography to the next level:

Large sensor, low noise: A 16.0-megapixel Live MOS Micro Four Thirds Sensor means images will be cleaner and freer of noise than ever. With newly developed processing capabilities, the low-noise pixel area and the low-noise circuit are combined, resulting in a noise level of less than one third of a conventional sensor.

High-speed, high-performance: The Venus Engine VI FHD, incorporating the image processing technology Advanced Intelligent Resolution and Intelligent D-range Control, allows beautiful photos and high-definition movies to be captured with superior signal processing. Users can take clear, high resolution photography even at high ISO sensitivity levels, without the bleeding of colours.

Never miss the perfect moment: Speed is of the essence for exceptional photography. The LUMIX G3 pushes the boundaries of high performance with the world’s fastest pinpoint auto focus speed, approximately 0.1 seconds. A wide range of AF modes are available, including multiple-area AF with up to 23 focus areas, Face Detection, and AF Tracking meaning the LUMIX G3 can lock onto any subject and keep it in focus even if it moves.

Crystal clear high speed action: The LUMIX G3's burst shooting capability has been improved to make sure you get the perfect image, even of a fast-moving subject. With up to 4 fps capability in 16.0-megapixel resolution and 20 fps at 4.0 megapixels, the LUMIX G3 allows the ultimate action photography at high resolution.

Rich detail definition: With the Advanced Intelligent Resolution technology, three areas — outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation areas - are automatically detected. Outlines are enhanced to give more clearly defined edges, while emphasising more highly textured areas of the image. The Venus Engine VI FHD also provides selective noise reduction to the outline, to let it have more naturally-balanced curve without any deterioration in resolution.

Full HD Movie quality: The quality advances of the LUMIX G3 are not restricted to still photos. The camera lets you take over the Hollywood director’s chair to record Full HD movies. Long recording times and intuitive controls help you create perfect movies with ease. The LUMIX G3's 16.0-megapixel sensor means the camera can record in Full HD AVCHD 1920 x 1080, 50i, producing higher quality movies with minimal noise. Due to the inter-picture prediction method for compression, the AVCHD format enjoys almost double the recording time compared to Motion JPEG. The Full-time AF and AF Tracking functionality allows you to take high-quality movies effortlessly. With just one touch of the screen, the LUMIX G3 locks on and automatically "tracks" the subject and keeps it in focus as it moves.
blank Electronic Viewfinder (EVF)
Stunning images, with no boundaries

With its ultra-compact and lightweight aluminium-bodied design, the LUMIX G3 goes wherever you do, with no limits. High precision, digital processing functions are combined in an easy-to-grip body. While a choice of using either the Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) or the 3.0-inch free-angle LCD featuring Full-time Live View for image-taking allows you to take capture the moment as the situation demands:

Sleek, ultra-compact and lightweight: At 25 percent smaller the LUMIX G2, weighing less than 340 grammes and with an easy-to-handle grip, the LUMIX G3 lets you take memorable photos, wherever you are.
blank 3.0-inch free-angle LCD

You choose how to shoot: Whether you want to take photos from above your head at a concert, or frame a portrait with your eye close to the camera, the high-resolution free-angle LCD screen or the Electronic Viewfinder (EVF) gives you the right set up for the right moment.

Get the perfect result: With the Live View function, you can check you’ve got the perfect result, before pressing the shutter button. You can view the effects of your creative settings on the high-resolution, 460,000-dot free-angle Intelligent LCD and 1,440,000-dot 1.4x Live View Finder with a 100 percent field of view. The LCD screen rotates 180° from side to side and tilts 270° up and down. The correlation between shutter speed and aperture is shown on Live View, with a colour-coded warning that alerts you when the settings are not in the proper range.

The world’s largest range of Micro Four Thirds lenses: The LUMIX G3 gives you the widest range of Micro Four Thirds lenses to choose from to make sure you have the right set up for the right job. With eleven Panasonic lenses and the option to use all Leica M and R Micro Four Thirds lenses, you can select a lens for every kind of shoot.
blank Intelligent Auto Plus
Let your creativity loose and make the most of every shot

For experienced photographers looking for advanced functionality of a DSLR, or a beginner who wants to take eye-catching images at the click of the button, the LUMIX G3 lets you get the results, as you want them. The LUMIX G3 provides the assistance to help beginners make the most of every shot, with advanced controls to take photography to the next level:

Touch control shooting: The LUMIX G3 features revolutionary touch control shooting, including full-area touch focusing where the focus can be set immediately to the subject, or to the background, by just one touch of the large LCD screen.

Rich colour reproduction with Intelligent D-range Control: With the new Intelligent D-range Control, the LUMIX G3 allows photographers of all levels to achieve the rich colour reproduction expected by professionals. The blues skies of summer will appear more natural than ever, as the camera optimises the exposure and ensures that gradation and individual details are artfully reproduced .

Intelligent Auto Plus functionality: In addition to these advanced functions, Panasonic’s Intelligent Auto Plus (iA+) mode provides the best shooting results when a photo opportunity appears or when you do not have time to make manual settings. This includes MEGA O.I.S (Optical Image Stabilising), which helps prevent blurring from hand-shake, and Intelligent ISO Control, which reduces motion blur by adjusting the ISO sensitivity if the subject moves as the shot is taken. With Intelligent Scene Selector the camera automatically switches to the appropriate mode according to the subject touched. For example, a touch on a human face switches to the portrait mode and a touch on the background to the scenery mode. My Colour mode has a total of seven preset effects - Expressive, Retro, High Key, Sepia, and High Dynamic - alongside custom mode, which lets you manually set the colour, brightness and saturation levels.
blank 3D still photography

Taking photography to the next dimension: The LUMIX G3 also lets you add an extra dimension to your photography skills, with high-quality 3D still photography with the LUMIX G3 3D 12.5mm / F12 lens. The lens produces 3D images without distortion or time lag between left and right images, even for moving objects.

StorCenter network storage devices for desktop deployments and rack-mounted data center use are aimed at small and medium-size businesses or remote offices for larger companies.

Iomega, which EMC bought in 2008 to provide a top-line consumer brand to go with its enterprise business, is beginning to work its way back upstream into the business market with the help of its parent company.

Iomega on May 4 launched a new line of StorCenter network storage products -- two for desktop deployments and one for rack-mounted data center use. All are designed for small and medium-size businesses or remote offices for larger companies.

The StorCenter PX Series consists of four-bay and six-bay desktop units that take up about a square foot of desk space and a four-bay rack-mount model. All run on EMC's network storage software.

Users have the option to use NAND flash-based solid-state drives in place of spinning disk hard drives if so inclined, Mark Tanguay, Iomega's worldwide manager of network solutions, told eWEEK. This is a first for San Diego-based Iomega.

The PX series also has advanced data protection features that include multiple RAID levels with hot-swappable drives, UPS support, user quotas, device-to-device replication and certification for most virtualization environments, Tanguay said.

Seagate Breaks Areal Density Barrier: Unveils The World's First Hard Drive Featuring 1 Terabyte Per Platter!

Seagate the leader in hard drives and storage solutions, today unveiled the world’s first 3.5-inch hard drive featuring 1TB of storage capacity per disk platter, breaking the 1TB areal density barrier to help meet explosive worldwide demand for digital content storage in both the home and the office.

Seagate Barracuda XT 3TB Hard Drive

Seagate’s GoFlex® Desk products are the first to feature the new hard drive, delivering storage capacities of up to 3TB and an areal density of 625 Gigabits per square inch, the industry’s highest. Seagate is on track to ship its flagship 3.5-inch Barracuda desktop hard drive with 3TBs of storage on 3 disk platters – enough capacity to store up to 120 high-definition movies, 1,500 video games, thousands of photos or virtually countless hours of digital music – to the distribution channel in mid-2011. The drive will also be available in capacities of 2TB, 1.5TB and 1TB.

“Organizations of all sizes and consumers worldwide are amassing digital content at light speed, generating immense demand for storage of digital content of every imaginable kind,” said Rocky Pimentel, Seagate Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing. “We remain keenly focused on delivering the storage capacity, speed and manageability our customers need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.”

GoFlex Desk external drives are compatible with both the Windows® operating system and Mac® computers. Each drive includes an NTFS driver for Mac, which allows the drive to store and access files from both Windows and Mac OS X computers without reformatting. The GoFlex Desk external drive’s sleek black 3.5-inch design sits either vertically or horizontally to accommodate any desktop environment.

Seagate - A tablet with a hard drive?

A tablet with a hard drive? …no way!

Just when I thought that tablets automatically meant flash, and I got on my high hard drive horse and spouted that tablets are good for drive companies because of the cloud, and home NAS, and yadda yadda yadda (by the way, it’s all true)…then Archos goes and ships a tablet with a 250GB hard drive, and touts the benefits of those “old-school” spinning media / mechanical devices.

What! Come again?

The Archos 7o internet tablet comes with a Seagate Momentus Thin 250GB hard drive and as Archos puts it, “Huge storage capacity: up to 250 GB at the price of 32 GB (flash).” On Archos’ website, the top banner reads: “Archos 70 internet tablet - The First Android Tablet with a 250GB Hard Drive“

and on the product page: “Up to 250GB : the best portable HD video playback experience anywhere.”

Is this crazy talk? What about flash and all the speed and supposed reliability? How can a hard drive “deliver the best portable HD video playback experience anywhere” ? Maybe it really is about capacity…

In December, Seagate launched their 2nd generation Momentus Thin drive with capacities up to 320GB with speeds of 5400 and 7200RPM. These drives are super thin with a 7mm thickness, and with a 1.3Watt average operating power draw, they are perfect for not only ultra thin laptops, but perhaps tablets as well.

Kudos Archos for setting me straight.
