OtterBox & OtterCares Promote Giving with Quarter-Million Dollar Donation

Fort Collins, COLO. — Over the span of just 24 days, OtterBox® employees donated more than a quarter of a million dollars and pledged over 1,000 hours of volunteer work during a giving challenge coordinated by the OtterCares® Foundation, the charitable arm of the Colorado case company.

On March 21, 2012 OtterBox employees each received a $200 grant certificate to kick off the “OtterCares Get it, Grow it, Give it Challenge” or the “G3 Challenge.” Employees were challenged to rise up and grow their donation to then give to a charity of their choice. They could grow the donation through fundraising, personal contributions, volunteer time or other creative ways.

At the end of last week, a total of $266,249.76 was donated to 156 charities. Of that total, over $214,000 was given to 76 organizations in Northern Colorado. The funds raised during this year’s campaign were more than double that of last year and easily surpassed OtterCares’ goal of $200,000.

Ingrained in the OtterBox culture at every level is the mantra, “To whom much is given, much is expected.” As a fast-growing Fort Collins, Colo. company, OtterBox is conscious of not only the ability, but the responsibility to enhance the communities in which they operate through charitable giving. OtterCares serves as an instrument of giving in the community for the booming case company as well as an outlet for employee volunteerism, offering opportunities to engage with initiatives like “G3.

“There are so many incredible stories of Otters working together for a common goal,” said Nancy Richardson, OtterCares founder and president. “We challenged employees to rise up and they responded with an incredible rally cry of enthusiasm and action.”

One group of OtterBox employees teamed up with other local businesses in support of Habitat for Humanity®. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Brinkman Partners, Beck Total Office Interiors, IT Value Path, Kimball Office, Stucco Riter, Neuworks Mechanical, F&C Door, Air comfort, Gregory Electric, Ogelsby Designs, Masters Flooring and other individual contributors made donations of either time, materials or money. In addition to a $1,000 donation, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will sponsor two build days for the team and other supporters.

Other Fort Collins businesses lent a helping hand by providing gift certificates and/or a location for fundraising events.

“These donations are a ‘thank you’ to those organizations that rise up to challenges every day,” Richardson said. “Many companies struggle with hard budgetary decisions today because of the economy. We have an opportunity to plant the seed in our employees and encourage giving outside of what we can do as a company and that’s the ultimate goal -- to watch generosity grow organically.”

Donations were hand-delivered to local non-profit organizations between Friday, April 13 and Monday, April 16, 2012.

GIGABYTE B75 Series: Small Business Management Made Easy

GIGABYTE B75 motherboards are specifically designed to fill the gap between traditional entry-level products, and specialized business PCs. The Intel® B75 Express Chipset supports Intel 2nd and 3rd generation processors and is positioned between Intel® Q77 and Intel® H61 Express Chipsets, offering a sweet spot in terms of value and features.

Supporting the latest 22nm 3rd generation Intel® CoreTM processors codenamed Ivy Bridge, GIGABYTE B75 series motherboards utilize the Intel B75 Express Chipset, and are the first motherboards to be bundled with the latest Intel® Small Business Advantage software platform; a collection of free out-of-the-box software applications designed to make it easier than ever for small business users to manage and configure their IT infrastructure.

Intel® Small Business Advantage Features

Data Backup and Restore

This feature allows you to automatically wake up the PC and launch the Microsoft Backup and Restore application. This means that Backup and Restore sessions can be scheduled to run outside of the regular business hours, to minimize inconvenience and impact on employee productivity.

Energy Saver

Allowing the user quickly and easily set a power schedule for the computer, Energy Saver allows the computer to enter sleep mode at the end of business hours, and powered up just before the beginning of business hours, thus improving productivity and saving energy costs. After configuration, the computer will continue to power up and power down at the scheduled times, with no user intervention necessary.

PC Health Center

Lets Small Business owners quickly and easily schedule all maintenance tasks, including Windows updates, disk defragmentation, deletion of temporary Internet files and other temporary application files that can take up hard drive space. The PC Health Center application is able to wake up the computer and run the scheduled tasks, helping to simplify PC maintenance.

Software Monitor

Detects and monitors security-related applications that are installed on the computer; these include Microsoft Security Essentials, Norton 360, Kingsoft Antivirus Software, Trend Micro Worry-Free Business Security, McAfee Total Protection and Kaspersky Internet Security. If a monitored security application is disabled or attacked for any reason, Software Monitor sends an alert to tell the user that something has occurred. The user can also define which applications to monitor and how they want to be notified.

USB Blocker

Computers in a small business need protection from possible security threats caused by the increased use of USB ports and USB devices. The USB Blocker application allows you to quickly and easily define which USB devices can connect to the computer. Different categories of USB device can be identified (e.g. portable storage, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, smart phones etc), with specific rule configuration options available.

Unique GIGABYTE Features

Insist on Ultra DurableTM
GIGABYTE B75 series motherboards support the latest GIGABYTE Ultra DurableTM 4 technology, embracing a range of exclusive technologies that guarantee DIY PC builders the absolute best protection for their PC. Specific features prevent common malfunction threats including humidity and moisture, electro-static discharge, sudden power loss and high operating temperatures.

Humidity Protection

There is nothing more harmful to the longevity of your PC than moisture, and most parts of the world experience moisture in the air as humidity at some point during the year. GIGABYTE B75 series motherboards have been designed to make sure that humidity is never an issue, incorporating a new Glass Fabric PCB technology that repels moisture caused by humid and damp conditions. Using a new kind of PCB material which reduces the amount of space between the fiber weave, Glass Fiber PCB technology makes it more difficult for moisture to penetrate compared to traditional motherboard PCBs. This offers much better protection from short circuit and system malfunction caused by humid and damp conditions.

Electrostatic Protection

GIGABYTE B75 series motherboards use high quality IC microchips that are rated with higher electro-static discharge (ESD) resistance than traditional IC implementations. GIGABYTE Ultra DurableTM 4 motherboards use ICs with up to 3 times the ESD resistance levels compared to traditional ICs. This helps to better protect the motherboard, its components and the PC in general against potential damage caused by static electricity, a common threat to today's PCs.

Power Failure Protection

If your office experiences a sudden power outage for any reason, GIGABYTE B75 series motherboards are equipped to ensure that you won't be dealing with a fatal malfunction and use patented DualBIOSTM technology to provide fail safe protection for the BIOS on your motherboard, automatically refreshing your BIOS from a back up version in the case of a critical power outage.

GIGABYTE B75 motherboards also feature special anti-surge ICs that protect your motherboard, and your PC, from any surge in power delivery that may occur, helping to ensure that your PC is equipped to deal with any kind of irregular and inconsistent power delivery.

High Temperature Protection

GIGABYTE B75 series motherboards feature specially selected components that make your PC capable of higher temperatures in more extreme conditions, while at the same time preventing your PC from overheating. Using all solid capacitors for the GIGABYTE B75 series both reduces overall board temperatures while, making the motherboard more robust at higher temperatures. The choice of Lower RDS(on) MOSFETs also helps to reduce operating temperatures significantly compared to traditional MOSFET solutions. These component technologies combine to guarantee enhanced longevity and stability for your PC.

On/Off Charge

GIGABYTE B75 motherboards feature GIGABYTE's exclusive On/Off Charge technology. A derivative of GIGABYTE's highly acclaimed 3x USB Power feature, On/Off Charge technology allows iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices to draw more current from GIGABYTE motherboard USB ports than standard USB ports allow, with the added benefit that the PC can be on, in standby mode or even off. Many mobile devices can be charged via a desktop PC's USB ports as long as the system is connected to an active power source, however this is not the case with the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Even when the PC is being used and charging is enabled, these devices usually only draw a mere 0.5A for a trickle charge that can take 3 hours or more to fully charge the device. The benefits of GIGABYTE On/Off Charge are that users can reduce their charge time by around 40% while also acting responsibly and shutting down their PC system while it is not in use, e.g. while they sleep.

Kaspersky Lab Announces Kaspersky Flashfake Removal

Abingdon, UK, 11 April 2012 - In response to the recent discovery of the Flashfake botnet, which has infected 670,000 computers worldwide, Kaspersky Lab has announced the availability of its free Kaspersky Flashfake Removal Tool. Users can check if they're infected with Flashfake by visiting Kaspersky Lab's safe verification site, and can remove it using the Kaspersky Flashfake Removal Tool.

Kaspersky Lab's experts recently analysed the Flashfake botnet and found a total of 670,000 infected computers worldwide, with more than 98% of the computers most likely running Mac OS X. It is anticipated that the other 2% of machines running the Flashfake bot are very likely to be Macs as well. This is the largest Mac-based infection to date, with the largest number of victims targeting developed countries. The United States had the most infected computers (300,917) followed by Canada (94,625), the United Kingdom (47,109) and Australia (41,600). Other infected countries included France (7,891), Italy (6,585), Mexico (5,747), Spain (4,304), Germany (4,021) and Japan (3,864).

On 6 April Kaspersky Lab's researchers reverse-engineered the Flashfake malware and registered several domain names which could be used by criminals as a Command & Control (C&C) server for managing the botnet. This method enabled them to analyse the communications between infected computers and the C&Cs. By connecting to Flashfake, Kaspersky Lab's experts are able to continuously monitor the botnet's communication with active bots and have published their findings here.

Throughout the Bank Holiday weekend Kaspersky Lab experts saw a decline in the number of active bots: on 6 April the total number was 650,748. At the end of 8 April, the number of active bots was 237,103. However, the rapid decrease in infected bots does not mean the botnet is shrinking at the same rate. The statistics represent the number of active bots connected to Flashfake over the weekend - it is not the equivalent of the exact number of infected machines. Infected computers that were inactive over the weekend would not have communicated with Flashfake, thus they would not have appeared as an infected bot.

Flashfake is a family of OS X malware that first appeared in September 2011. Previous variants of the malware relied on cyber criminals using social engineering techniques to trick users into downloading the malicious program and installing it in their systems. However, this latest version of Flashfake does not require any user-interaction and is installed via a "drive-by download," which occurs when victims unwittingly visit infected websites, allowing the Trojan to be downloaded directly onto their computers through the Java vulnerabilities. Although Oracle issued a patch for this vulnerability three months ago, Apple delayed in sending a security update to its customer base until 2 April. Users who have not updated their systems with the latest security should install and update immediately to avoid infection.

"The three month delay in sending a security update was a bad decision on Apple's part," said Kaspersky Lab's Chief Security Expert, Alexander Gostev. "There are a few reasons for this. First, Apple doesn't allow Oracle to patch Java for Mac. They do it themselves, usually several months later. This means the window of exposure for Mac users is much longer than PC users. This is especially bad news since Apple's standard AV update is a rudimentary affair which only adds new signatures when a threat is deemed large enough. Apple knew about this Java vulnerability for three months, and yet neglected to push through an update in all that time! The problem is exacerbated because - up to now - Apple has enjoyed a mythical reputation for being ‘malware free'. Too many users are unaware that their computers have been infected, or that there is a real threat to Mac security."

(herein “Mizuho CB”) today announced that the three companies have reached a basic agreement to construct a 70-megawatt (MW) solar power plant in southern Japan and to further explore a business model for utility-scale solar power generation. The “mega-solar plant” is being built to help solve Japan’s power supply issues caused by the effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and to make a contribution to environmental protection, including the reduction of CO2 emissions.

To be built in Kagoshima City (Kagoshima Prefecture), the solar power project is being undertaken by combining the strengths of the three companies: Kyocera utilizing its more than 35 years of experience in the solar business; IHI implementing its proactive stance on promoting the increased use of renewable energy; and Mizuho CB applying its wide-ranging finance knowledge.

Within the agreement, the Kyocera Group will be responsible for the supply of 100% of the solar modules and part of the construction & maintenance of the system; IHI will lease the land and actively participate in the operation of the project; and Mizuho CB will devise a financing plan for the project. Furthermore, a special-purpose company will be established to undertake the business operation of the mega-solar plant, with Kyocera planning to become the largest shareholder. In the process of exploring the feasibility of the new business, Kyocera and IHI have enlisted the support of and plan to get cooperation for investment in the special-purpose company from KDDI Corporation; Kyudenko Corporation; Kagoshima Bank, Ltd.; Takenaka Corporation and others.

With the cooperation of the Kagoshima prefectural and municipal governments and others in the local area, the companies seek to both revitalize the local area, and through the spread of renewable energy use, to contribute to the preservation of the environment and the advancement of society.

The planned site of the solar power plant is approximately 1,270,000m² (approx. 314 acres) of land owned by IHI. The total project cost is estimated at approximately 25 billion yen (approx. EUR 234 million*1), with construction to commence in July of this year.

Plans for the plant include exclusive use of approximately 290,000 Kyocera multicrystalline solar modules, with a total capacity of 70MW, becoming the largest officially announced solar power plant in Japan. The planned 70MW of solar power generation is equal to almost 40% of the total amount of public/industrial-use solar power equipment shipped domestically in CY2011*2. The approximately 79,000MWh of annual electricity generated will provide the equivalent power for roughly 22,000 average households*3, and will help to offset roughly 25,000 tons of CO2 per year*4.

Expectations and interest in solar energy have heightened to a new level in Japan with the planned July 1 start of a revamped feed-in tariff (FIT) program and the need to resolve power supply issues caused by the effects of the Great East Japan Earthquake. Under these circumstances the three companies have reached this basic agreement as they believe that it is their corporate responsibility to proactively tackle environmental problems.

At home, on campus or carried easily to the nearest cafĂ©, new VAIO E Series stands out from the crowd with its soft, discreetly reassuring ‘wrap-around’ design. Three fresh colours – white, black or pink – are accented by complementary colour flourishes around the notebook’s edge, lid, touchpad and keyboard. Chic, individual credentials are emphasized further by the aluminium speaker bezel.

The comfortably-spaced isolation keyboard features a handy backlight for error-free late-night typing. It’s activated by an ambient light sensor that also dims screen brightness to conserve power in low-light conditions.

The generously-sized multi-gesture touchpad offers a large clickable surface for intuitive, ‘button-free’ control. There’s plenty of space to navigate pages, edit photos and more with fingertip scroll, flick, pinch/zoom and pivot movements.

Brand-new to VAIO, Gesture Control lets you interact with your computer using intuitive hand movements. Just hold your hand up in front of the web camera and swipe left or right to flick though web pages or your photo gallery. Pull your hand down to pause music playback or a slideshow, or adjust music volume up or down with ‘rotate’ movements. Gesture Control is currently supported by Windows® Media Player, Internet Explorer® 9, PowerPoint® and PowerDVD.

Video chats are clearer and crisper with the built-in HD web camera powered by ‘Exmor for PC’. Friends and family will enjoy seeing you with sharper details, higher contrast and rich colours: even in low light where other web cameras struggle with grainy, fuzzy images.

New VAIO E Series 14P gives you effortlessly clear, sparkling sound to match its good looks. Unique to Sony, xLOUDTM and Clear PhaseTM technologies boost volume levels without distortion for impressive-sounding movies and games. Alternatively, switch to Dolby® Home Theatre® V4 for rich, cinema-style audio – whether you’re listening through built-in speakers, external loudspeakers or headphones.

Hybrid graphics use a dedicated GPU for demanding applications like games, video and photo editing. For less intensive tasks VAIO automatically switches off the dedicated GPU to boost battery life. Endurance is stretched even further by the efficient VAIO Display and energy-efficient processors, plus an on-board optical drive that shuts down to zero power consumption when it’s not needed.

Can’t afford to hang around? With new Rapid Wake + Eco, you’re ready for action in moments. This energy-saving mode puts VAIO into an ultra-low power deep sleep, keeping all your data safe for up to ten days2. Open the PC’s lid and you’re up and running in seconds, with all your files just as you left them.

Don’t worry if your phone’s short of juice while you’re on the move: VAIO makes a handy ‘any time’ charger for your smartphone if there’s no AC socket nearby. Just plug in your phone via USB for a top-up - even when the computer is switched off or in sleep mode.
