D-Link Now Shipping its Smallest Wireless USB Adapter

USB adapter featuring wireless 802.11n and push-button security, in a thumbnail sized design

D-Link, the end-to-end networking solutions provider for business and consumers, today announced that it is shipping the D-Link Wireless N Nano USB Adapter incorporating the speed and greater range of 802.11n Wi-Fi technology, into one of the smallest form factors of its type on the market.

D-Link’s Wireless N Nano USB Adapter, DWA-131, provides an easy and cost-effective way to upgrade the wireless network performance of a desktop or notebook computer. The Nano Adapter connects to a Wireless 802.11n network providing download speeds of up to 300 Mbps*1. Network users can access high-speed Internet services, transfer files and stream media from virtually anywhere in their home or office.

The Nano Adapter’s Wi-Fi Protected Setup, WPS feature, enables it to establish an easy, one-time, single-click secure connection with a WPS-enabled access point or wireless router, eliminating the need for manual entry of complex encryption codes. WPS automatically sets advanced security features using WPA2 encryption. As an alternative, D-Link's Quick Setup Wizard also provides an easy way to set up the USB adapter and the included Wireless Manager helps to keep track of recently accessed networks.

"With its sleek compact design and unmatched performance, this ultra-portable USB adapter is an ideal choice for setting up a secure, high-performance wireless connection" explains Andrew Mulholland, Marketing Manager for D-Link UKI.

The D-Link Nano Adapter uses 802.11n technology to maximise the speed and range of wireless signals to significantly outperform 802.11g devices*2, while maintaining compatibility with existing 802.11b/g wireless routers and access points.

D-Link Wireless N products use smart antenna technology to transmit multiple streams of data, bouncing wireless signals off walls and ceilings to work around obstructions and help eliminate dead spots, allowing users to receive wireless signals in the farthest corners of their home or office.

Western Digital introduces a My Book range of hard drives with an e-label display.

Western Digital developed the e-label high-contrast smart display which reads like ink on paper, and lets the user create a customised label to describe the drive's contents.

Utilising e-paper technology similar to that found on the ebook readers, the information on the display remains clearly visible even when the drive is unplugged, and can be changed easily and as often as desired. The e-label also shows available storage capacity and drive security status.

The new My Book Studio drives feature user-selected password protection combined with 256-bit hardware-based encryption, which scrambles files before they are stored. Typically found only on much more expensive drive systems, the encryption acts as a virtual padlock to keep users' data safe.

The new My Book Studio drives also come equipped with WD SmartWare software, an integrated application which provides automatic and continuous backup, as well as control of the e-label display, password and other settings. When the My Book Studio drive is plugged in for the first time, the simple and intuitive first backup process launches automatically. The real-time visual interface of WD SmartWare software gives users a reassuring view of their backup as it happens. After the first backup, users' files are backed up automatically every time they change or add a file.

WD SmartWare software is compatible with the Apple® TimeMachine. Users with older versions of Mac OS (not equipped with TimeMachine) or those who wish to use the drive for both backup and extra storage have the option to use WD SmartWare software backup capability.

The new Western Digital My Book Studio drives feature:

* Smart display with a customisable e-label that reminds users of what is stored on the drive, available capacity and security status at-a-glance, even when the drive is unplugged;
* High-performance FireWire 800 interface to access data at top speeds and USB 2.0 interface;
* Plug-and-play ready for Mac users and compatible with Apple TimeMachine;
* WD SmartWare software that visually presents consumers' data in a software control center, providing them peace of mind that their precious photos, videos and files are securely protected;
* 256-bit hardware-based encryption and password protection for peace of mind knowing that data is protected from unauthorised access;
* Smaller, sleeker, more streamlined design and elegant book-like shape that takes up minimal space and allows two or more My Book drives to nestle together neatly like volumes on a shelf;
* WD GreenPower Technology™ lowers internal drive power consumption by up to 30 percent, a sleep mode reduces power during idle times, and a power-saving feature turns the drive on and off with your computer;
* Planet-friendly packaging derived from recycled materials to minimise waste;
* HFS + Journaled1 formatting and are compatible with Mac OS X Tiger®, Leopard® and Snow Leopard™;

WD SmartWare software features:
* Visual backup displays that show content in categories and shows the progress of backup;
* Automatic, continuous data backup will instantly make a second copy whenever you add or change a file;
* Retrieve valuable data to its original location whether it's lost data or the file has been overwritten; and,
* Customisable data backup that allows user to set drive security, run diagnostics, manage the power settings, and more from the WD SmartWare control center.

Apple - We’ve built a better mouse. 29 October 2009

It began with the iPhone. Then came the iPod touch. Then the MacBook Pro. Intuitive, smart, dynamic. Multi-Touch technology introduced a remarkably better way to interact with your portable devices — all using gestures. Now Apple has reached another milestone by bringing gestures to the desktop with a mouse that’s unlike anything ever before. It's called Magic Mouse. It's the world's first Multi-Touch mouse. And while it comes standard with every new iMac, you can also add it to any Bluetooth-enabled Mac for a Multi-Touch makeover.

Seamless Multi-Touch Surface

Magic Mouse — with its low-profile design and seamless top shell — is so sleek and dramatically different, it brings a whole new feel to the way you get around on your Mac. You can’t help but marvel at its smooth, buttonless appearance. Then you touch it and instantly appreciate how good it feels in your hand. But it’s when you start using Magic Mouse that everything comes together.

The Multi-Touch area covers the top surface of Magic Mouse, and the mouse itself is the button. Scroll in any direction with one finger, swipe through web pages and photos with two, and click and double-click anywhere. Inside Magic Mouse is a chip that tells it exactly what you want to do. Which means Magic Mouse won’t confuse a scroll with a swipe. It even knows when you’re just resting your hand on it.

Laser-Tracking Engine
Magic Mouse uses powerful laser tracking that’s far more sensitive and responsive on more surfaces than traditional optical tracking. That means it tracks with precision on nearly every surface — whether it’s a table at your favorite cafe or the desk in your home office — without the need for a mousepad.

Wireless
Magic Mouse connects wirelessly to your Mac via Bluetooth, so there’s no wire or separate adapter to worry about. Pair Magic Mouse with your Bluetooth-enabled Mac and enjoy a reliable and secure connection up to 33 feet away. When you combine Magic Mouse with the Apple Wireless Keyboard, you create a workspace free of annoying cables.

And because Magic Mouse is wireless, it can venture beyond the confines of your desk. A quick flick of the on/off switch helps conserve battery power while Magic Mouse is tucked in your bag. Even when it’s on, Magic Mouse manages power efficiently, by detecting periods of inactivity automatically.
Make one great gesture after another.

Multi-Touch technology on the iPhone and iPod touch introduced a breakthrough way to interact with your content. Magic Mouse, with its Multi-Touch surface, does the same thing for your Mac. When you use gestures, it’s as if you’re touching what’s on your screen. For instance, swiping through web pages in Safari gives you the feeling of flicking through pages in a magazine. And scrolling with Magic Mouse isn’t your everyday scrolling. It supports momentum scrolling (similar to iPhone and iPod touch), where the scrolling speed is dictated by how fast or slowly you perform the gesture.

Give it your personal touch
Maybe you want scrolling but don’t want swiping. Or two-button clicking instead of one. Whatever the case, Magic Mouse works the way you want it to work. All you do is go to the Magic Mouse preference pane in System Preferences to enable or disable features.

The ambidextrous design of Magic Mouse means it fits comfortably in your right hand if you’re a righty or in your left hand if you’re a lefty. And left-handers can easily swap left and right button functionality using System Preferences.
System Requirements

* Bluetooth-enabled Mac computer
* Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later with Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0* or Mac OS X v10.6.1 or later with Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0
* Existing keyboard and mouse for setup
* Two AA batteries (included)

Microsoft Simplifies the PC With Windows 7

Today Microsoft Corp. announced the worldwide availability of its new Windows 7 operating system. Windows 7 delivers on a simple premise: make it easier for people to do the things they want on a PC. The new operating system offers a streamlined user interface and significant new features that make everyday tasks easier and allows people to get the most out of computers of all styles and sizes.

“With Windows 7, there’s never been a better time to be a PC,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “Together with our partners, we’re bringing more choice, flexibility and value to the market than ever before. With Windows 7, you’re sure to find a PC that fits your life.”

Building Windows 7 has been a collaborative process from the beginning, with Microsoft’s engineers and designers working with customers and partners to build an operating system that delivers on the vision of the PC, simplified. In a speech in New York, Ballmer thanked the millions of volunteers who helped improve the product by testing early versions.

“A project with the global customer reach of Windows can only be done as a team,” said Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows and Windows Live Division at Microsoft, speaking at a launch event in Tokyo. “We are grateful for the valuable contributions from customers, partners and developers around the world that helped make Windows 7 such a collaborative project.”

On Sale Worldwide Today
The global availability of Windows 7 is joined by an unprecedented array of new PCs and software programs. With more PC options available for customers today at a wide range of price points starting under £200, customers can choose the PC that fits their personality, style and needs, from netbooks, ultrathin notebooks and highly interactive multitouch laptops to all-in-one desktops and high-end, water-cooled gaming machines.

Customers can purchase PCs with Windows 7 or software upgrades online or in-store from technology retailers or at the new Microsoft Store, launching today in its first retail location in Scottsdale, Ariz., and expanded online. Retailers and technology partners are also featuring a series of limited-time offers for customers looking for great deals on Windows 7-based PCs, devices and software.

To show how Windows 7 simplifies the PC, today Microsoft is launching the next wave of its global “I’m a PC” campaign. The global enthusiasm of Windows users is also contributing to the way many people around the world will experience Windows 7 for the first time. Tens of thousands of customers have volunteered to host launch parties or meet-ups beginning today, showing off Windows 7 to friends and family members.

Simplifying the PC
Over the past 18 months, feedback from more than a billion opt-in customer sessions and 8 million beta testers validated Microsoft’s research on how to simplify everyday tasks. Here are a few of the many ways users will experience a more simplified PC with Windows 7:

Simplifies Everyday Tasks
- Taskbar. The go-to spot for launching programs and switching windows, the taskbar has been completely redesigned to help users work smarter, cut clutter, and get more done, with features such as thumbnail previews of Web pages, documents — even running video.

- HomeGroup. Users can easily share their files and printers with other PCs running Windows 7 in their home.

- Windows 7 Device Stage. This shows the status of all connected devices such as cameras and mobile phones, and makes it easier to synchronize and manage them.

- Photos and videos. Windows Live Photo Gallery and Windows Live Movie Maker (available via download) offer customers great, free options to edit photos and videos and easily share them with loved ones.

- Snap. Users can drag an open window to the screen’s border to automatically re-size it. Snap two different windows to the left and right borders for a perfect comparison.

- Shake. Users can click on a window pane and shake the mouse to minimize all other open windows, then shake the pane again to restore the windows to their original sizes.

- Internet Explorer 8. Microsoft’s fastest, easiest and safest browser ever offers smart new features such as Instant Search, Accelerators and Web Slices to help users get more out of the Web.

Works the Way Users Want
- Faster on, faster off. Every Windows 7 user will benefit from the focus on underlying performance, faster startup, resuming and shut down time, and enhanced power management.

- Mobile made easier. All of a user’s mobile computing settings are in one place with the Windows Mobility Center.

- Protecting the PC. Safeguarding the data on a PC is easier with advanced backup capabilities and the free Microsoft Security Essentials download to help protect users against viruses, spyware and other malicious software.

Makes New Things Possible
- Windows Touch. Users can interact with the PC with a touch-screen monitor, using their fingers and multitouch gestures.

- PlayTo. Users can stream their digital music, videos and photos to other PCs or devices such as an Xbox 360 console connected to the TV.

- Internet TV. New content providers and an improved interface make it even easier to watch TV on the PC.

- Rich gaming and graphics. Windows 7 includes performance enhancements that take power gaming and entertainment to a new level, with 64-bit support and DirectX 11 graphics.

- Location-aware printing. Documents are sent to the right printer whether it’s at home or at the office. And with Offline Files users can work offline and automatically synchronize between a PC and documents on their office network.

Along with increased customer involvement, Microsoft’s partners had a closer, more involved role in the product vision and planning process with Windows 7. The collaborative approach to engaging partners to inform development efforts has resulted in improved performance for PCs as well as compatibility with a broad range of software and hardware across the Windows ecosystem. More than 50,000 developers from 17,000 companies are enrolled in the Windows Ecosystem Readiness Program to build solutions for Windows 7. Together, these partners are developing hardware, software and services capable of reaching more than a billion PCs around the world.

And the big, rubber-like buttons are easy to use when you're quickly trying to capture those awesome adventure shots.

To get the best possible action shots, the FinePix Z33WP features Picture Stabilisation and Face Detection technology. Picture Stabilisation uses high sensitivity (up to 1600 ISO) to help reduce camera shake, freeze subject movement and improve low-light background detail to deliver virtually blur free images. Meanwhile, Face Detection can detect up to 10 faces in a frame and optimises focus and exposure for faces, rather than any background objects perfect for pictures of people in the midst of the action.

First featured on Fujifilm's high-end compact, the FinePix F60fd, the FinePix Z33WP is fitted with Scene Recognition AUTO. This clever technology automatically detects the scene you're shooting Night, Landscape, Macro, Portrait, Night Portrait and Backlight Portrait and optimises the camera's settings to produce the best results.

The FinePix Z33WP also features two fun and handy Self-timer Modes Couple and Group. These are great for when you, your friends, or partner, all want to be in the shot but there's no-one around to take the picture. All you have to do is select the number of faces and the camera automatically takes the shot once all faces are in the frame.

Finally, to enable you to share your shots with friends, the FinePix Z33WP features the very popular Blog Mode. This re-sizes images to a cyber-friendly size so you can quickly and easily pop your pics on social networking sites such as Facebook and Flickr for all to see and enjoy.

Toshiba adds elegant StorE Steel to its external hard disk drive family

Toshiba Europe expands its external hard disk drive family with the addition of two new devices that have a strong focus on design. StorE steel has a minimalist and elegant design that comes in three glossy metallic colours.

“With our new StorE steel, we are again expanding our external hard disk drive family with devices that appeal to our style conscious customers – those who desire high quality, ease of use and a personalised design,” says Marco Perino, General Manager EMEA PC options, Peripherals and Service Division, Toshiba Europe GmbH. “We strongly believe in consumer choice and so offer our StorE steel products in a range of sizes and capacities with a selection of designs to choose from.

StorE steel – minimalist design made from glossy steel

It is the minimalist and elegant design that makes the StorE steel unique. The casing is made up of a glossy, scratch and smudge resistant stainless steel design that is available in three different metallic colours: titanium, silver and gold. Customers can choose between a 1.8’’ and a 2.5’’ hard disk. The 1.8’’ version measures 10.3 cm x 6.3 cm x 1.4 cm and offers a storage capacity up to 160 GB. The 2.5’’ hard disk drive can store up to 500 GB of digital content. Measuring 12.7 cm x 7.8 cm x 1.3 cm it is small enough to fit easily into a laptop carry case. Furthermore the drives are very lightweight, despite their steel casing, and weigh only 120g and 190g respectively. Above all there is no need for an external power supply as StorE steel is powered via USB interface.
