Sony to acquire Ericsson’s share of Sony Ericsson
· Sony Ericsson to become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony and integrated into Sony’s broad platform of network-connected consumer electronics products
· The transaction also provides Sony with a broad IP cross-licensing agreement and ownership of five essential patent families
· Ericsson to receive EUR 1.05 billion cash payment
· Sony and Ericsson to create wireless connectivity initiative to drive connectivity across multiple platforms
Sony Corporation (“Sony”) and Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (“Ericsson”) today announced that Sony will acquire Ericsson’s 50 percent stake in Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (“Sony Ericsson”), making the mobile handset business a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony.
The transaction gives Sony an opportunity to rapidly integrate smartphones into its broad array of network-connected consumer electronics devices – including tablets, televisions and personal computers - for the benefit of consumers and the growth of its business. The transaction also provides Sony with a broad intellectual property (IP) cross-licensing agreement covering all products and services of Sony as well as ownership of five essential patent families relating to wireless handset technology.
As part of the transaction, Ericsson will receive a cash consideration of EUR 1.05 billion.
During the past ten years the mobile market has shifted focus from simple mobile phones to rich smartphones that include access to internet services and content. The transaction is a logical strategic step that takes into account the nature of this evolution and its impact on the marketplace.
This means that the synergies for Ericsson in having both a world leading technology and telecoms services portfolio and a handset operation are decreasing. Today Ericsson’s focus is on the global wireless market as a whole; how wireless connectivity can benefit people, business and society beyond just phones. Consistent with that mission, by setting up a wireless connectivity initiative, Ericsson and Sony will work to drive and develop the market’s adoption of connectivity across multiple platforms.
“This acquisition makes sense for Sony and Ericsson, and it will make the difference for consumers, who want to connect with content wherever they are, whenever they want. With a vibrant smartphone business and by gaining access to important strategic IP, notably a broad cross-license agreement, our four-screen strategy is in place. We can more rapidly and more widely offer consumers smartphones, laptops, tablets and televisions that seamlessly connect with one another and open up new worlds of online entertainment. This includes Sony’s own acclaimed network services, like the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network,” said Sir Howard Stringer, Sony’s Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President. Mr. Stringer also noted that the acquisition will afford Sony operational efficiencies in engineering, network development and marketing, among other areas. “We can help people enjoy all our content – from movies to music and games – through our many devices, in a way no one else can.”
“Ten years ago when we formed the joint venture, thereby combining Sony’s consumer products knowledge with Ericsson’s telecommunication technology expertise, it was a perfect match to drive the development of feature phones. Today we take an equally logical step as Sony acquires our stake in Sony Ericsson and makes it a part of its broad range of consumer devices. We will now enhance our focus on enabling connectivity for all devices, using our R&D and industry leading patent portfolio to realize a truly connected world” said
Hans Vestberg, President and CEO of Ericsson.
When Sony Ericsson started its operations on October 1, 2001, it combined the unprofitable handset operations from Ericsson and Sony. Following a successful turnaround the company has become a market leader in the development of feature phones by integrating Sony’s strong consumer products knowledge and Ericsson’s telecommunications technology leadership. The WalkmanTM phone and Cyber-shotTM phone are well known examples.
With the successful introduction of the P1 in 2007, Sony Ericsson early on established itself in the smartphone segment. More recently, the company has successfully made the transition from feature phones to Android-based Xperia™ smartphones. By the end of the third quarter of 2011, Sony Ericsson held a market share of 11 percent (by value) in the Android phone market, representing 80 percent of the company’s third quarter sales. During its ten years in operation Sony Ericsson has generated approximately EUR 1.5 billion of profit and paid dividends totaling approximately EUR 1.9 billion to its parent companies. Prominent models include ”XperiaTM arc” and “XperiaTM mini” which received 2011 EISA Awards, while recent notable additions to the lineup include “XperiaTM PLAY” and “XperiaTM arc S”.
The transaction, which has been approved by appropriate decision-making bodies of both companies, is expected to close in January 2012, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.
As a result of obtaining full control of Sony Ericsson, Sony will consolidate Sony Ericsson from the closing date of the acquisition. The resulting impact of the acquisition to Sony's consolidated results for the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2012 is currently being evaluated.

Acer Announces Key Management Reshuffle
Acer announces key management reshuffle. Acer EMEA president Walter Deppeler shall lead global marketing and branding while concurrently serving as chief marketing officer. President of Acer China Oliver Ahrens will front the EMEA operations, and president of Acer Taiwan Scott Lin will concurrently head the China operations.
Furthermore, in recognition of the following executives’ contribution to Acer’s overall business, Scott Lin, Oliver Ahrens and the president of Asia Pacific operations, Steve Lin, are promoted from the title of corporate vice president to “senior” corporate vice president; Walter Deppeler already holds this title.
The management reshuffles crossover to the company’s regional markets. By strategically placing the executives in positions that amplify their core capabilities, Acer expects to enhance operating efficiency and fortify overall competitiveness very soon.
Walter Deppeler of Swiss nationality is well-acquainted with the regional sales and marketing affairs. He previously served as Acer EMEA’s vice president and acting president. After the departure of former Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanci in late March, Deppeler took over the EMEA presidency. In this short period, he effectively lowered the region’s channel inventory and stabilized the organization. Deppeler will next lead Acer’s global marketing and branding function while also serving as chief marketing officer.
Oliver Ahrens of German nationality has accrued long-term experience in EMEA. He was formerly country manager of Acer Germany, while serving in parallel as business director of EMEA’s peripherals business unit. In April 2009, Ahrens took over as president of Acer China, where he successfully laid the ground works for a solid business operation, integrated the Founder PC business, and boosted Acer’s market share and revenue in China by almost three fold.
Scott Lin, having been in charge of Acer China operations from 1998~2005, is a veteran of the China market. During his tenure, Lin established an efficient channel and service infrastructure, defined a clear product strategy, enhanced marketing efforts, and increased the number of offices and storage facilities. As head of the Taiwan operations since 2001, Lin was behind Acer’s consecutive growths in market share and in achieving the No. 1 position for total PC shipments at large.
The executives will begin handover of their responsibilities immediately and expect to complete by the year end.

AVADirect Introduces Desktops Featuring AMD Bulldozer Processors
Twinsburg, OH - October 21st - AVADirect, a leading custom computer manufacturer, announces newly added desktops featuring the new Bulldozer architecture by AMD. The Bulldozer processors feature six to eight cores and coexist with AMD FM1 and AM3+ chipsets to drive HD quality visuals along with multi-monitor gaming using ATI graphics card eyefinity technology. Increased cores will provide end-users with increased mutli-tasking, and the ability to handle stress-oriented processes that previous generation chips could not handle.
The Bulldozer architecture is said to be the direct response to Intel's Sandy Bridge architecture, even after four years in development. Before launch, AMD set a world record by overclocking their FX series processor to 8Ghz using liquid hydrogen. The demonstration was not meant to point end-users in a specific direction of cooling methods, but to showcase the Bulldozers ability to overclock to new limits set by AMD.
AVADirect will continuously update their website with new products featuring the Bulldozer architecture beyond what is currently listed. More importantly, their mission directly correlates to offering the most extensive configuration options while incorporating newly advanced technologies currently available. This philosophy is what sets them apart from competitors. AVADirect increasingly raises the bar for performance at an affordable price; thus making AVADirect solutions using Bulldozer a great match.

Kyocera supplies 8,500 modules for 2-MW solar plant in France
Kyoto / Neuss − 8,500 solar modules on four acres of wasteland: these are the dimensions of the new solar power plant, which was officially inaugurated today in Distré, in the French department of Maine-et-Loire. The mega-complex is a flagship project in terms of sustainability: the Kyocera KD235 solar modules installed produce an average total energy of 2.2 GWh per year of environmentally-friendly electricity — equal to the average annual energy consumption of 900 households. Furthermore, the clean-energy power plant will off-set roughly 700 tons of CO2 per year.
The solar installation in Distré is the largest solar power plant in north-western France, and is a pioneer project for future model systems. The renewable energy plant was established as a sustainable solution for the reclamation of a wasteland. Through the installation of solar modules, the wasteland has now been recycled for long-term use. The Kyocera solar modules used for this project are characterized by their excellent quality, long service life and high efficiency.
The project was realized with an investment by the French company Quénéa Energies Renouvelables — a medium-sized enterprise specializing in the field of renewable energy — and the state-run financial institution Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations.

Kyocera Solar: proven high quality "Made in Europe"
17 October 2011 - Kyoto / Neuss − Quality assurance and transparency is of great importance to the Japanese technology company Kyocera. Recently, the European factory of the world-renowned major corporation for photovoltaic systems in the Czech Republic has been certified by TÜV Rheinland with the certificate of origin "Made in Europe". Also new: since the beginning of October, the product warranty is now valid for 10 years, which is twice as long as before. Furthermore, Kyocera’s solar modules have been certified by the Japanese JET Institute according to Standards of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
TÜV Rheinland certifies that all photovoltaic modules manufactured at Kyocera's European factory in Kandan in the Czech Republic can bear the certificate of origin "Made in Europe". This factory certification is particularly relevant for investors from Italy: Special solar energy regulations, resulting from the new Italian Solar Law "Conto Energia IV" of June this year, provide additional incentives for plant operators to use solar energy systems manufactured in Europe. The use of modules with a certificate of origin "Made in Europe" is rewarded with a 10% increase in remuneration. Kyocera photovoltaic modules demonstrably comply with the binding guidelines for retracing and factory identification, which are the basis for the bonus.
New: 10 year product warranty for Kyocera modules
Kyocera carries out all production steps at its own factories. This vertical integration ensures a particularly high standard of quality. By extending the warranty period, Kyocera now gives the conviction of its own product quality a particular expression. As of 01 October 2011, the warranty period of Kyocera modules sold in Europe for grid-connected applications, has been doubled from 5 to 10 years. Furthermore, Kyocera provides a 20-year warranty for the power output of the modules.
Salt mist corrosion test successfully passed
In view of the worldwide continuous expansion and technological development of photovoltaic systems, reliable and verifiable international standards for manufacturers are gaining in importance for buyers and investors. Currently, Kyocera solar modules were successfully tested by the Japanese Electrical Safety & Environment Technology Laboratories, short JET. The JET certification - the Japanese equivalent of the German TÜV - confirms that the salt mist corrosion testing of photovoltaic modules is in accordance with the standard IEC 61701. The solar modules from Kyocera have passed the test flawlessly.
Through continuous improvement and quality control of their own solar modules, Kyocera wants to promote the further expansion and use of solar energy worldwide, thereby helping to counter the global energy and environmental problems.

Microsoft Officially Welcomes Skype
REDMOND, Wash., and LUXEMBOURG — Oct. 13, 2011 — Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq “MSFT”) has closed its acquisition of Skype Global S.à r.l. Negotiations of the definitive agreement under which Microsoft would acquire Skype, an Internet communications company, for $8.5 billion were led by investor group Silver Lake and the transaction was originally announced on May 10, 2011. Boards of directors of both Microsoft and Skype previously approved the acquisition.
Microsoft and Skype will remain focused on their shared goal of connecting all people across all devices and accelerating both companies’ efforts to transform real-time communications for consumers and enterprise customers. The completion of the acquisition also marks the official introduction of Skype as a new business division within Microsoft.
“Skype is a phenomenal product and brand that is loved by hundreds of millions of people around the world,” said Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. “We look forward to working with the Skype team to create new ways for people to stay connected to family, friends, clients and colleagues — anytime, anywhere.”
Skype CEO Tony Bates will assume the title of president of the Skype Division of Microsoft immediately, reporting directly to Ballmer. The Skype division will continue to offer its current products to millions of users globally. Longer term, Skype will also be integrated across an array of Microsoft products to broaden Skype’s reach and accelerate its growth as a fundamental way people communicate online. Skype employees will continue to be located around the world in offices including Estonia, the Czech Republic, Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and the United States.
“By bringing together the best of Microsoft and the best of Skype, we are committed to empowering consumers and businesses around the globe to connect in new ways,” Bates said. “Together, we will be able to accelerate Skype’s goal to reach 1 billion users daily,” Bates said.
Founded in 2003, Skype was acquired by eBay in September 2005, and then acquired by an investment group led by Silver Lake in November 2009. Skype has made impressive progress, developing new products and revenue streams, strategic acquisitions, acquiring the intellectual property powering its peer-to-peer network, and recruiting an outstanding senior management team.
Other members of the selling investor group led by Silver Lake include eBay International AG, CPP Investment Board, Joltid Ltd. in partnership with Europlay Capital Advisors; and Andreessen Horowitz.
The acquisition remains under review in a few countries, and will be completed in those countries when such reviews are closed

LONDON, England - 12 October 2011 -
Seagate (NASDAQ:STX) today unveiled the latest way to bring digital entertainment to the television with the GoFlex Cinema™ multimedia drive. This new high-capacity drive is designed to transform the television into a digital media center. The drive comes equipped with all of the port connections and support for popular file formats that make it easy to start enjoying movies, music and photos away from the compute environment. The long time challenge of migrating digital video and pictures from the personal computer to the entertainment center has now been resolved with the GoFlex Cinema multimedia drive. The streamlined industrial design is modeled after the new GoFlex Desk high-capacity drives announced earlier this month. The GoFlex Cinema drive is now available in 1TB, 2TB and 3TB capacities from consumer electronics retailers and online resellers across Europe.
With support for MKV, H.264 and MP4, the GoFlex Cinema multimedia drive will allow you to play back the majority of video formats in 1080 HD quality. This high-capacity drive can be used as a home for all your media needs. Load it up with content and then connect it to your home theater for hours of entertainment. “We are extremely honored to be recognized as a finalist for the GSN Homeland Security awards,” says Luis Artiz, director of product management at Belkin. “Our new NIAP EAL 2+ Secure KVM is the first of its kind to employ optical diodes to guarantee uni-directional data paths, preventing peripherals from being used to leak information from one computer system to another. Additional security is provided through its end-to-end tamper-proof system that prevents physical tampering, and its intuitive user interface reduces user-switching errors by providing clear identification.”
Keep your smartphone’s battery powered with new USB portable power supply from Sony
Ultra-portable, easy to use CP-A2LS and CP-ELS offer ‘any time, any place’ power-ups
At the airport or on the beach – make sure your smartphone doesn’t run out of power at the vital moment with two new USB portable power supply chargers from Sony.
The CP-A2LS and CP-ELS are ideal for travellers, mobile professionals – or anyone who can’t afford to be without power on the move. Light and easy to carry, both chargers make topping up your smartphone as easy as plugging into your computer’s USB port or AC plug.
With a generous 4000 mAh capacity, the portable charger CP-A2LS packs power for up to two recharges of your smartphone’s battery, either via the included micro-USB cable or your smartphone’s original cable. Four LED indicators give at-a-glance confirmation of the charger’s remaining battery level.
When it’s time to recharge, simply attach the battery charger CP-A2LS to its supplied AC input module for quick charging via the nearest mains socket. When you’re done, detach the AC input module and slip the CP-A2LS into a pocket or bag for instant power whenever it’s needed.
The 2,000 mAh capacity of the ultra-compact CP-ELS provides power for a single charge of your smartphone. Recharging the CP-ELS is as simple as plugging into your computer’s USB port. Like the CP-A2LS, a micro-USB cable is supplied as an alternative to using your phone’s own cable for charging.
A low self-discharge rate means both models retain ~80% of their initial charging level after 12 months, cutting the risk of being left powerless at the wrong moment.
The new CP-A2LS and CP-ELS Portable power supply chargers by Sony are available from the beginning of November 2011.

Lenovo: Extraordinary Partnership with Space Adventures and World Renowned Space Agencies Ignites Students' Passion for Science, Space, and Technology
NEW YORK (October 11, 2011) - YouTube and Lenovo, in cooperation with Space Adventures and space agencies including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), today announced YouTube Space Lab, a worldwide initiative that challenges 14-18 year-old students to design a science experiment that can be performed in space. The two winning experiments will be conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and live streamed on YouTube. Space Lab is part of YouTube's larger commitment to highlighting and providing access to the wealth of educational content available on YouTube as well as Lenovo's focus on equipping students with 21st century skills via information technology.
A prestigious panel of scientists, astronauts and educators, including renowned professor Stephen Hawking, NASA's Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations William Gerstenmaier, NASA's Associate Administrator of Education and former Astronaut Leland Melvin, ESA Astronaut Frank De Winne, JAXA Astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and Cirque du Soleil's founder Guy Laliberté, will judge the entries with input from the YouTube community. Students in two age categories, 14-16 years old and 17-18 years old, either alone or in groups of up to three, may submit a YouTube video describing their experiment to YouTube.com/SpaceLab.
Six regional finalists will gather in Washington, D.C., in March 2012 to experience a ZERO-G flight and receive other prizes. From them, two global winners, one from each age group, will be announced and later have their experiments performed 250 miles above Earth and live streamed on YouTube. Additionally, the global winners will get to choose a unique space experience as a prize: either a trip to Tanegashima Island, Japan, to watch their experiment blast off in a rocket bound for the ISS, or once they are 18 years old, a one-of-a-kind astronaut training experience in Star City, Russia, the training center for Russian cosmonauts.
Space Lab is one component of YouTube's broader educational offering, including YouTube.com/EDU, home to a wealth of high-quality educational videos from educators of all subjects and levels; YouTube.com/Teachers, a resource providing teachers with guidance on how to effectively incorporate video into their classrooms; and YouTube for Schools, a new pilot program aimed at making YouTube accessible in more schools.
"As a company committed to the next generation of scientists, YouTube launched Space Lab to allow ordinary students the extraordinary opportunity of having their experiment carried out in space," said Zahaan Bharmal, Google's Head of Marketing Operations, Europe, Middle East, and Africa and the man behind the idea for Space Lab. "The Space Lab channel will serve as a home base on YouTube for creating, sharing, and discovering the best space and science-related videos in the world. Our goal is to encourage students to explore the world of science, earthbound and beyond, by first accessing YouTube, and ultimately space."
As the leading PC supplier to students of all ages, Lenovo enhances learning inside and outside the classroom via PC and tablet technology solutions as well as by spearheading progressive education research led by Lenovo's research arm, the Education Research Initiative (ERI). Current ERI projects include the Student Global Leadership Initiative, in which students from five countries collaborate virtually using Lenovo tablets to help solve the earth's energy issues; equipping teachers with the skills to use technology innovatively at the Bastow Institute, the world's premier training facility for primary and secondary school teachers; and collaboration with ETS, the world's leading provider of educational testing, on combating students' summertime "brain drain" by using ThinkPad laptops to measure whether frequent, low-stakes testing improves knowledge retention for students over their summer break.
"We've worked with educators around the world for more than 20 years to empower teaching and learning with innovative technology products that connect classrooms digitally with the global knowledge economy," said Mike Schmedlen, Director of Worldwide Education at Lenovo. "Space Lab complements our commitment to education by giving teachers everywhere an unprecedented opportunity to spark students' creativity and learning, and together help unlock some of the mysteries of the universe."
