NETGEAR's new wifi booster for mobile delivers a big signal from a small package
NETGEAR's WiFi Booster for Mobile Eliminates WiFi Dead Spots and Provides Better Wireless Signal Strength and Coverage for all Your Mobile Devices at Home
Bracknell, UK- July 23, 2012 -NETGEAR®, Inc. (NASDAQGM: NTGR), a global networking company that delivers innovative products to consumers, businesses and service providers, today announced the WiFi Booster for Mobile (WN1000RP). The compact, WiFi Booster for Mobile amplifies WiFi coverage for mobile devices in the home by extending and strengthening an existing WiFi signal, giving consumers the ability to enjoy an improved wireless experience on tablets, smartphones and e-readers.
Consumers are leveraging WiFi connectivity at home more than ever before to browse the web, stream movies and play online games on their devices. The NETGEAR WiFi Booster for Mobile improves an existing WiFi signal throughout the home and even outside on the deck or patio, enabling users to move freely around the house while streaming content on everything from tablets and e-readers to smartphones.
In addition, the NETGEAR WiFi Booster for Mobile helps consumers reduce the risk of unforeseen mobile data plan charges by easily accessing their home WiFi networks instead of the carrier's mobile networks. The NETGEAR WiFi Booster for Mobile enables users to surf the Internet and stream content using WiFi, unconstrained by mobile data plan usage limits.
NETGEAR's WiFi Booster for Mobile repeats a 2.4 GHz WiFi signal from existing routers and gateways to boost range and WiFi performance. It has a small form factor and is simple to install with a mobile-friendly browser-based setup and real-time LED indicators helping to determine optimal placement to ensure the best WiFi coverage. With the small wall-plug design and NETGEAR's Push ‘n' Connect (WPS) feature, the WiFi Booster for Mobile connects quickly and easily once plugged into a power outlet and provides an instant and secure connection to any existing WiFi network.
"Consumers today want the best connected experience, complete with the ability to enjoy online entertainment on their WiFi connected mobile devices throughout the home," said Damir Skripic, product line manager for connected entertainment at NETGEAR. "The NETGEAR WiFi Booster for Mobile enables this experience by significantly increasing WiFi coverage in the home, which is ideal for roaming iPads, iPhones, Android tablets, Kindle e-readers, smartphones or any other mobile WiFi devices."

In addition, the NETGEAR WiFi Booster for Mobile helps consumers reduce the risk of unforeseen mobile data plan charges by easily accessing their home WiFi networks instead of the carrier's mobile networks. In a March 2012 report by Chetan Sharma, researchers found that 90% of tablet owners prefer to use WiFi, not mobile data plans, to get online at home.
ASUS Presents Full Range of Windows 8-Ready AMD Platform Motherboards Loaded with new features and exclusive innovations tailored to the upcoming operating system
To provide the best user experience on the AMD platform, ASUS has refreshed a variety of motherboards, including mainstream channel models, dedicated products from ROG and the TUF Series, plus FM1 socket-compatible and power-efficient APU-based models. Each product offers a variety of new ASUS exclusive technologies such as digital power control, Remote GO!, and Network iControl, alongside innovative Fast Boot, ASUS Boot Setting, and DirectKey, all specifically leveraging upcoming Windows 8 capabilities. Both new and existing features have been tailored and tested to comply with the Windows 8 architecture for total stability and maximized utility, while all motherboards have gone through a full series of compatibility assurance tests in getting ready for the move to Windows 8.
M5A99/97 R2.0 and TUF Series: refreshed AM3+ with exclusive Windows 8 features
Fully upgraded AM3+/990FX motherboards now include a variety of features that are designed to enhance the Windows 8 experience. Fast Boot ensures customers make the most of Windows 8 expedited boot up, creating a smoother and more responsive experience. By enabling Fast Boot, system power-up to Windows 8 login takes just two seconds, cutting out annoying waits. A direct result of Windows 8 optimization efforts, ASUS Boot Setting affords greater flexibility in customizing a PCs startup process. It allows for instant one-click access to the user-friendly BIOS upon reboot or the ability to choose between various expedited startup profiles. ASUS Boot Setting saves preferences permanently, and no further selections are needed. Exclusive DirectKey has been developed for customers who demand frequent and effortless BIOS access, even with the PC on standby power. One key press goes to the BIOS immediately, eliminating the tradition of repeatedly pressing the DEL key for greater convenience and accuracy.
The above features all tie in directly to Windows 8 capabilities, but ASUS has gone even further. New Dual Intelligent Processors 3 with SMART DIGI+ Key, a digital power delivery design that offers dedicated controllers for the CPU and DRAM, makes delicate power tuning of both available on the AMD platform for the first time. Overall system stability, power efficiency and overclocking potential all see an improvement as a result of the new design, which is available on the M5A99/97 R2.0 Series and the TUF SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0. Also on board is the new and compact Remote GO!, catering to diverse home entertainment needs, based on ASUS Wi-Fi GO! technology. With the app installed on mobile devices, smartphones and tablets transform into a PC remote control, with three useful wireless functions: DLNA Media Hub, Remote Desktop, and File Transfer.
Crosshair V Formula-Z: Windows 8 on AMD with the Republic of Gamers
The all-new ROG AM3+ gaming motherboard arrives loaded with most of the above mentioned features, reinforcing them via added ROG exclusive technologies to provide hardcore gamers the most powerful and stable AMD platform Windows 8 choice. Gaming and overclocking-specific features include ROG Extreme Engine Digi+ II precision digital power control and delivery, again covering both CPU and DRAM for refined tuning and a wider overclocking margin. Upgraded SupremeFX III™ audio boosts onboard sound to pro-gaming standards, offering enhanced immersion and audio positioning in games. Its Red Line shielding technology maintains clear analog/digital signal separation for cleaner sound quality, while a metallic EMI cover blocks interference from adjacent components inside the case. For better online multiplayer and overall networking, exclusive GameFirst II now features the all-new EZ mode, an intuitive user interface that lets gamers quickly manage bandwidth prioritization and traffic shaping to reduce ping and lag.
F1A75/A55 Series: addressing a wider customer base
For the AMD FM1 socket with A75 and A55 chipsets, ASUS has also readied a refresh of models ahead of Windows 8 general availability. F1A75-M PRO R2.0 and F1A55 R2.0 Series motherboards feature hardware tuned for the new operating system alongside ASUS exclusives that make the most of FM1 socket-compatible CPUs and the energy-efficient AMD APU design. The F1A75-M PRO R2.0 is equipped with Dual Intelligent Processors 2, featuring TPU and EPU performance and energy optimization controllers alongside DIGI+ VRM digital power delivery, which offers precision voltage adjustments for customized power based on APU characteristics while creating more overclocking headroom. Additional features include Network iControl, LucidLogix Virtu™ MVP, UEFI BIOS and AI Suite II.

OtterBox Evolution Continues with New Executive Leadership
FORT COLLINS, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--OtterBox® has always been about evolution, and the next phase of that development includes a new leader to drive the company to the next level. OtterBox founder Curt Richardson will transition into a new role as chairman and pass the chief executive torch to current President Brian Thomas.
“There’s always been a lot of change at OtterBox, and there always will be,” Richardson said. “Probably the person who has seen the most change has been me. The best part about being the owner is that you get to change your own role.”
Richardson founded OtterBox in 1998 after developing the original dry box line from the comfort of his Fort Collins, Colo. garage. The company has seen much of its growth during the last several years with a shift in focus to protective solutions for mobile technology.
Thomas joined OtterBox in 2002 as employee No. 6 when the company’s annual revenue topped out at $2 million. At the time, OtterBox was focused on waterproof, crush proof dry boxes, popular among water sports enthusiasts. He helped the company evolve from a producer of generic dry boxes to device-specific protection products – first for PDAs, then to the current lineup of smartphone and tablet cases. He also spearheaded the global expansion of OtterBox which now includes offices in Cork, Ireland and Hong Kong.
“Curt has mentored me for 10 years to get to the place that I am now,” Thomas said. “We will continue to work together. I will do everything I can to make this company grow and succeed in the vision and footsteps that Curt has laid out. We’ll do this together.”
Thomas spent the last decade at OtterBox in various roles including sales manager, sales and marketing director, chief operating officer and president. He and Richardson have worked side by side to grow OtterBox and continuously clarify the company’s vision.
Richardson explained that the transition has been a long time in the making and the announcement is largely just a change in titles that reflects the current roles of both he and Thomas. Complementing Thomas’ new role as president and CEO is the addition of Pete Lindgren as COO.
Lindgren brings decades of experience in global manufacturing. He has worked in the electronics manufacturing services industry since 1985 and has held a number of management positions in international operations, sales and marketing, program management, and materials with SCI Systems, MTI International and, most recently, at Celestica.
“OtterBox has grown significantly and will continue to grow significantly,” Richardson said. “We need the right talent in place for that. “You always hire someone smarter than yourself. That’s what we’ve done and what we’ll continue to do."

Kyocera Document Solutions expands expertise in advisory and solutions business
Kyocera Document Solutions Deutschland GmbH, the German branch of one of the world’s leading document solutions companies, announced today that it has acquired AKI GmbH, an expert in software-based printing management solutions. This acquisition continues Kyocera’s plan to expand its expertise in the area of advisory and solution services. AKI’s current operations will continue to be oriented to their client’s current requirements and the present market situation. AKI’s sales operations will remain independent and continue to employ the proven approach that has produced successful results in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
In April 2012 Kyocera Mita changed its name to Kyocera Document Solutions. As part of the accompanying strategic reorientation, the company began to expand its business with managed document services and solutions, as well as forming new country-specific or global partnerships with various software providers. The acquisition of AKI is an important component in this strategic reorientation.
To mark the occasion of the German branch’s 25th anniversary last year, the company announced ambitious growth targets, including the aim of increasing sales to 500 million euros over the next five years. AKI represents an important milestone in this growth strategy. Not only does AKI’s independent business model complement Kyocera’s existing business, AKI’s product range augments Kyocera’s portfolio of third-party solutions and will be available to all Kyocera distributors in the future. Both companies expect positive synergy from the partnership, as they have a shared main focus of developing economical, customer-oriented solutions.
Based in Würzburg, Germany, AKI GmbH has been providing advisory and software services covering the entire output management spectrum, including printing distribution, print-out editing, template management and document archiving, since 1986. The company’s main product is AKI PrinTaurus, a modular, cross-platform and manufacturer-neutral solution, which is also certified for SAP systems.
“Acquiring AKI will support the ambitious growth targets of Kyocera Document Solutions Deutschland over the coming years. In line with our corporate philosophy, AKI will remain an independently-operating company that complements our portfolio of third-party solutions,” explains Reinhold Schlierkamp, Managing Director of Kyocera Document Solutions Deutschland GmbH.
“We’re looking forward to leveraging synergies in collaboration with Kyocera Document Solutions Deutschland GmbH. At the same time, we will continue to consistently pursue AKI’s 26-year tradition of supplying our customers with manufacturer-neutral solutions for their increasingly multi-vendor environments. Providing customer-oriented, independent advisory services is a key component of our business’s success and company’s mission,” adds Martin Kellner, Managing Director of AKI GmbH.

D-Link’s Mobile Cloud Companion gives UK consumers their own personal cloud
Portable mobile companion lets you connect, share, back-up, extend and charge - all from one device
London, 18 July 2012 - D-Link has unveiled its Mobile Cloud Companion, a must-have device for every travelling tablet and smartphone owner. The Mobile Companion (DIR-505) extends and transforms any Internet connection into a Wi-Fi hotspot and lets users access, view and share content easily, synchronise files and even charge mobile phones, providing a personal cloud that users can carry in their pocket.
Perfect for business travellers and anyone on the go, the Mobile Cloud Companion functions when plugged into any wall socket without any need for complicated installation or drivers. Its built-in antenna allows multiple users and devices to share the same wireless Internet connection over a large range.
The Mobile Cloud Companion can operate in multiple operation modes. In Repeater mode, the device helps to eliminate gaps in your wireless coverage, extending the scope and range of connectivity throughout the home. Further modes include the Router/Access Point mode and the Wi-Fi Hotspot mode, which instantly adds Wi-Fi capability to an existing Internet connection. By linking the Mobile Cloud Companion directly to an Internet modem or Internet point in a hotel, for example, users are able to wirelessly share the same Internet connection simultaneously. Easy one-touch Wi-Fi protected setup (WPS) provides added control, ensuring users are up and running quickly, while security is maintained.
The mobile companion also boasts a USB port which allows you to connect a memory stick or USB hard drive and share or stream content to any connected device. The USB port can also be used as a mobile charger for smartphones, another invaluable tool for those on the go. This ability to view and share local content, combined with D-Link's own SharePortTM Mobile Technology, makes the Mobile Cloud Companion a perfect personal cloud device. Users simply download the free app, SharePortTM Mobile to an iPhone®, iPad® or AndroidTM device, to access, view and share content on a memory dongle or USB Hard Drive instantly. The free app, SharePortTM Mobile, also gives complete control to the user, allowing them to easily access and backup the contents of their mobile device onto a USB storage device wirelessly, and without the need for a computer.
Adrian Edwards, Consumer Solutions Manager at D-Link UK & Ireland, commented: "Mobility and convenience are two of the biggest demands from consumers today. The advent of tablets and smartphones has changed the way we all work and interact, yet accompanying technology has struggled to catch up. The beauty of the Mobile Cloud Companion lies in the way it gives users the ability to seamlessly access and share content from any local source, providing them with their own personal cloud. Its flexibility and simplicity bridges the gap and enables users to easily access their content, whether over the Internet or on a centrally stored device."
Perfect for today's increasingly mobile world, the Mobile Cloud Companion is smaller than a standard mouse and weighs just 114 grams, meaning it easily slips into a pocket or laptop bag. With this mobile device, users now have a simple and affordable way to meet their power and connectivity requirements, wherever they go.

Innovative features for easy group shots and self-portraits
Using Samsung's innovative 3.3inch, 180-degree Flip-out display, the MV900F allows users to capture and frame images from any angle, whether you're looking to shoot large groups of friends or even full body shots to show off your whole image.
Even when subjects aren't ready for their close-up, the MV900F has a range of functions to create professional beauty shots. A virtual make-up bag, Samsung's new Beauty Palette feature allows users to choose from ten different make-up options to smooth, brighten and add colour to their personal profile shots.
Additionally, to make it easy to shoot self-portraits or group shots, Samsung's unique Gesture Shot uses motion-sensor technology so that you can control the camera remotely through gestures alone. To control the camera's zoom functions users simply make a circular motion with their hand. When the shot is ready to be taken, just move your hand up and down to capture the image.

SAPPHIRE HD 7970 6GB TOXIC Edition is Fastest in the World
SAPPHIRE Technology has just announced its HD 7970 6GB TOXIC Edition graphics card boasting the highest clock speeds in its class and believed to be the fastest single GPU graphics card in the world.
The SAPPHIRE HD 7970 6GB TOXIC Edition is based on the latest HD 7970 GHz Edition GPU from AMD, together with a host of industry first and exclusive features to deliver maximum performance. Its unique 6GB frame buffer is a World first for a consumer graphics card and makes the TOXIC Edition ideally suited to multi-screen gaming as well as providing the extra memory required for demanding professional applications such as content creation, video editing or rendering.
Performance is also World leading. By default, the HD 7970 6GB TOXIC Edition runs at 1050 MHz and with PowerTune Dynamic Boosts rises to 1100 MHz on the engine with the memory clock at 6000 MHz effective. By pressing the new SAPPHIRE exclusive Lethal Boost Button, the beast is unleashed, boosting the core clock speed to 1100 MHz with PowerTune Dynamic Boost to an industry first of 1200 MHz on the engine while the memory is further overclocked to 6400 MHz effective. The fan profile and PowerTune limit is also changed to performance settings. In addition, users will be able to individually tune the card with SAPPHIRE TriXX, the company's free to download software tool that allows key parameters to be adjusted for maximum performance.
This astonishing performance is achieved partly as a result of a completely new power control system developed by SAPPHIRE - the Lethal Power Suite. The Lethal Power suite consists of many premium design features. These include a new 8 phase power design for the GPU VDDC, with an additional one phase each for VDDCI and MVDD. The design uses a brand new double sided Black Diamond Choke for the first time, as well as DirectFET technology and all on a 12 layer PCB to ensure the board runs fast and stable. (The double sided Black Diamond Choke design reduces the temperature around the power design portion by 40 degree Celsius in lab test when compared to the reference PCB design.)
Cooling a card with such extreme performance demands a special solution - and the SAPPHIRE HD 7970 6GB TOXIC Edition has it - with a new implementation of SAPPHIRE's World acclaimed Vapor-X technology. The Vapor-X cooler on the TOXIC Edition is based on a new vapor chamber designed especially for this model. Heat is carried away by four heatpipes (2 x 8mm plus 2 x 6mm), and finally dispersed by two 90mm fan with aerofoil blades and dust repelling bearings.
The Vapor-X cooler easily handles the heat generated from Toxic HD 7970 even when it is running at over 1200 MHz. Additional peace of mind for the user is provided by another new feature - the PCB Temperature LED: The SAPPHIRE HD 7970 6GB TOXIC Edition has a built in onboard LED for users to monitors the PCB temperature.
Based on AMD's Graphics Core Next architecture, the SAPPHIRE HD 7970 6GB TOXIC Edition supports all the latest demands of multi-screen applications, multi-threaded Application Acceleration with stream processing, fast HDMI support for high resolution and stereoscopic 3D displays and all the Direct Compute features incorporated in the latest operating systems. But with its exciting feature set the SAPPHIRE HD 7970 6GB TOXIC Edition is able to deliver all this with the highest levels of performance ever achieved from a single GPU.

Buffalo Selects Paragon Software’s exFAT and NTFS for Android Drivers to Embed into Next Generation Android Smart Box Products
Irvine, USA and Nagoya, JAPAN - July 12, 2012 - Cross-platform software developer Paragon Software Group (PSG) today announced that Buffalo Inc. selected Paragon Software's exFAT and NTFS for Android drivers for embedding into Buffalo's next generation of Smart Box product lines. Paragon's NTFS for Android driver allows consumers to attach their NTFS (Windows®) formatted USB Key or Hard Drive to the Smart Box and now with Paragon's exFAT for Android driver also included, consumers can get the full utility of the new high capacity exFAT-formatted SDXC cards in the Smart Box.
"Paragon has been a strong partner for Buffalo; their first-class OEM support as well as the superior performance and features of their technology are key reasons we have chosen PSG for our Smart Box project," said Kentaro Odaka, General Manager of Product Development Div. Buffalo Inc. "This expansion of our partnership provides the tools necessary for our customers to access and enjoy digital content on a variety of devices."
Paragon's drivers offer superior management of file system integrity, fast mount speed, comprehensive data protection, powerful file system check and repair utilities, and strong journaling capabilities. Paragon's proprietary replay journal feature protects a consumer's data on a USB HDD or SDXC card when unsafely removed from a Smart Box, TV, or Monitor. Without this feature there is a high potential that the file system on their USB HDD or SDXC card could become unrecognizable to Windows and cause data loss.
"We are very excited about extending our partnership with Buffalo to include our latest Universal File System Driver (UFSD) offerings - including exFAT for Android," said Tom Fedro, president of Paragon Software Group. "This partnership will provide the very best experience for end users as they are now able to view, modify and save content regardless of the type of storage medium utilized."
Paragon's driver technology enables any device on the network, from tablets to smartphones to servers, PCs and workstations, regardless of their operating system, to communicate and share files. For over 10 years now, Paragon UFSD technology has been providing operating systems and embedded kernels (Android, Linux, Windows, Mac, ThreadX, VxWorks, eCos, etc.) with access to file systems (exFAT, NTFS, HFS+, Ext, etc) that normally would not be fully supported. Beyond access, Paragon's UFSD technology provides the highest data throughput speeds possible - equivalent to, or exceeding, native performance. This is especially important for flawless recording and playback of High-Definition, Blu-ray quality movies and videos.

D-Link Introduces ShareCenter™ 2-Bay Cloud Network Storage Enclosure with mydlink™ Cloud Services
New cloud Network Attached Storage Enclosure allows remote users to view documents and multimedia anytime, anywhere, from any device
LONDON, 9 July 2012 - D-Link today introduced the latest addition to its cloud family; the ShareCenterTM 2-Bay Cloud Network Storage Enclosure (DNS-320L). This new 2-bay storage device is DLNA-certified, providing convenient remote access to files and multimedia from the industry leading mydlinkTM website or mobile app available for iPhone®, iPad® or AndroidTM devices. Once up and running, registered mydlinkTM users can play stored music, watch videos, and view photos on their ShareCenterTM instantly and directly from any internet-connected device.
"Being able to securely access shared files while at home or on the go is a necessity in today's digital, on-the-move world. The DNS-320L integrates with mydlinkTM Cloud Services to eliminate many of the traditional technical challenges associated with securely accessing files remotely," said Adrian Edwards, Consumer Solutions Manager at D-Link UK & Ireland. "No amount of storage is useful unless it's readily available. That's why we've made Cloud Storage products so easy to access from any internet-enabled device so that documents and multimedia are instantly available at the touch of a screen."
Create a Personal Cloud
Smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices provide users with the ease and convenience of portability. Unfortunately, this portability often comes at the expense of space for storing files and multimedia. With the ShareCenterTM 2-Bay Cloud Network Storage Enclosure, these limitations are a thing of the past, with up to 6TB storage capacity for a content library that is accessible virtually anywhere. This new ShareCenterTM device achieves this by establishing a ‘personal cloud' that allows owners to access and maintain control over their digital content. Once registered to mydlinkTM Cloud Services, content stored on this device is reachable from any compatible web browser or from a mobile device running the mydlinkTM app for iOS or AndroidTM.
Stream and Share Multimedia
The ShareCenterTM 2-Bay Cloud Network Storage Enclosure is a convenient repository for files of any type, but is especially suited for multimedia such as digital audio, video, and photos. This ShareCenterTM device is DLNA certified, ensuring interoperability with a variety of standalone, mobile, and personal computer-based media players. ShareCenterTM owners with a media player like the Boxee Box by D-Link can stream media directly to their TV without the need for an always-on computer. iPod®, iPad®, and iPhone® users who want to stream their library can benefit from integrated iTunes media server, while content-hungry consumers will find a built-in P2P download engine that hastens the process of downloading new content to the Network Attached Storage device.
Straightforward Installation and Configuration
The ShareCenterTM is designed to be easily set up in minutes. With 2-bays, each currently supporting 3.5" Hard Drives of up to 3TB in capacity, owners need simply open a hatch, slide in a Hard Drive or two, and power on. A convenient set-up wizard simplifies the process of initialising and formatting new drives. High capacity drives can be installed together in a RAID 1 configuration to prevent against lost data in the event of Hard Drive failure, or alternatively installed in one of any three additional modes (Standard, JBOD, RAID 0). Feature rich backup software and support for Apple® Time Machine are included to help ensure the integrity of important data from one or more computers.
D-Link Green
As part of D-Link Green, the DNS-320L also includes several features which make it both environmentally-friendly and cost-effective. Hard Drive power management and Smart Fan speed control reduce energy costs, minimise noise, and prolong the lifespan of installed Hard Drives.

Samsung announces EX2F smart camera
Samsung combines high end photography and easy sharing with the introduction of the EX2F
London, UK - 3rd July, 2012 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd today announced the launch of the EX2F, the latest model in its growing range of Wi-Fi-enabled SMART cameras. Following the success of the EX1 with F1.8 lens, the new model is engineered to deliver even brighter photography thanks to its F1.4 lens, the brightest in any compact camera.
The EX2F comes with the advantage of being able to store and share images remotely using the Wi-Fi functionality. The Full Manual Control is ideal for DSLR-owners looking for more portable equipment to capture images spontaneously on the go and for photographers looking for a step-up from their point-and-shoot.
The camera combines a number of features which deliver incredible picture quality in all conditions. With the advanced F1.4 24mm Lens, the camera delivers clear images and video even in very low light conditions. These are easily controlled using the professional front wheel key and Dual Dials, which enable switching between parameters and modes quickly for greater manual control. The low-light capabilities of the EX2F are also added to by the 1/1.7" 12 Megapixel BSI CMOS sensor, which delivers clear, blur-free images.

KYOCERA Modules Begin Operating at 2.1MW ‘SoftBank Kyoto Solar Park’
02 July 2012 - Kyoto / Neuss − Kyocera Corporation announced that it has completed installation of its solar modules for the first phase of the SoftBank Kyoto Solar Park (Kyoto City, Japan), and that the approximately 2.1 megawatt (MW) installation began operation yesterday to coincide with the start of the new Japanese feed-in tariff (FIT) for renewable energy. The SoftBank Group subsidiary in charge of renewable energy business, SB Energy Corp., will be the operator of the solar power plant. Starting with July 1 2012, solar installations which produce more than 10 kilowatts (kW) of solar energy are subsidized with a feed-in tariff of 42 yen (approx. 34 pence/ 42 Eurocent) per kilowatt hour. This makes the program in Japan one of the most attractive in the world.
At the inauguration ceremony of the first section of the SoftBank Kyoto Solar Park with approximately 2.1MWp, Kyocera founder and chairman emeritus, Kazuo Inamori stated: “It was only a few kilometers from this place here where Kyocera took the initiative to set up a research center for the development of photovoltaic cells more than thirty years ago. At that time there was little interest in solar energy, but Kyocera tirelessly continued on with our R&D, sacrificing while our solar business segment operated in the red year after year. That hard work eventually paid off as Kyocera was the first in the world to mass produce multicrystalline silicon solar cells. That is why it fills me with emotion to see this spectacular solar park […] and I believe that it is symbolic to have this mega-solar project here in the same area where Kyocera’s early R&D into solar power was first undertaken.”
The Renewable Energy Sources Act, enacted about one year after the disaster in Fukushima and based on its German counterpart, is to accelerate the move towards alternative energy sources and counteract electricity shortages in the future caused by the idling of nuclear power plants in Japan. Because of this, sustainable solutions are needed to ensure the energy supply, especially in the hot summer months when demand for air conditioning puts a strain on peak capacity. “The introduction of the feed-in tariff system for electricity from renewable energy sources is an important step for the expansion of the photovoltaic market in Japan,” asserted Tetsuo Kuba, president of Kyocera Corporation. Experts expect that by the year 2013, Japan will achieve a photovoltaic world market share of 10 to 15 per cent. The total output of the solar energy generated in Japan will amount to about 3.0 gigawatts.
Two categories for subsidies of solar power in Japan
Effective as of 1 July 2012, solar installations which produce more than 10 kW of solar energy are subsidised with a feed-in tariff of 42 Yen per kilowatt hour for a period of 20 years. The same rate is also applied to installations with an output of less than 10 kW — but for a period of only ten years. For determining the subsidy amount, all of the energy generated counts, not just the unused energy fed back into the grid. With the start of the new feed-in tariff, the subsidisation of small installations in Japan will be about twice as much as in Germany — for large plants even three times as much.
As of the effective date, other renewable energies in addition to solar energy will also be subsidised in Japan. This means that use of geothermal, wind, hydro and biomass energy sources are also expected to increase, helping to prevent climate change and stabilize Japan’s energy supply.
About Kyocera Solar in Japan
Kyocera holds the number one share in Japan for public- and industrial-use solar power installations — with a market share for industrial-use installations around 40 per cent. The Japanese technology group boasts 37 years of expertise in the field of solar energy, and is currently involved in the installation of several mega solar power plants. The Kyoto Solar Park is built in two phases. At the first facility in the southern part of Kyoto City, Japan, 8,680 Kyocera modules equaling approximately 2.1MW of solar power were installed. This will generate roughly 2.1GWh of electricity annually, which is enough to supply power for approximately 580 households¹. The second phase of the project has already begun construction in June of this year, with operation set to start on September 1, 2012.
Furthermore Kyocera Corporation announced a deal with another Japanese company to build and operate a 70 megawatt solar plant in southern Japan. Construction is planned to begin in July 2012; with around 290,000 Kyocera modules being used to generate roughly 79,000 MWh of solar energy annually. That corresponds to the energy requirements of approximately 22,000 average households. Kyocera sees the current project as an example of the success story of the company. The solar energy expert’s business in the mega solar installation segment is to be further expanded in future.
