Personal Computing Transformed: Ultrabook™ Ushers In the Most Complete Computing Experience
INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, San Francisco, Sept. 14, 2011 – Speaking today at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF),Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager of the PC Client Group, said the personal computing experience is undergoing another fundamental transformation as the company leads the creation of Ultrabook™, a new category of mobile devices.
To define the Ultrabook category, Intel began with what people want most out of their personal computing devices, both from an emotional and a rational perspective. Ultrabooks are designed to give people the power to create and consume in a sleek, light, secure and elegant device that offers an immersive and responsive experience without compromising performance, all at mainstream price points.
"Not since the introduction of Intel® Centrino® technology more than 8 years ago have we witnessed such a fundamental transformation of personal computing," said Eden. "Today's devices powered by our 2nd generation Intel® Core™ processors are giving people a personal computing experience that they've never had before and we won't stop there. We know people desire and demand more from their computers -- to create, consume and share -- which is why we have challenged ourselves and the industry to make Ultrabook the most adaptable, complete and satisfying device."
PC Transformation Underway
The first Ultrabook devices, scheduled to be available during this year's holiday shopping season, are based on 2nd generation Intel Core processors. They will come in range of sleek form factors and will wake up almost instantly from even the deepest sleep using Intel® Rapid Start technology.
The 2nd generation Intel Core processor family introduced earlier this year delivers an entirely new visual computing experience as a result of improved performance and processor graphics. Eden said that to-date, Intel has shipped 75 million 2nd generation Intel Core processors, making it the fastest-shipping processor in the company's history. It also underscores the continued strong demand for personal computing worldwide, as approximately 1 million computers are sold each day, led by growth in emerging markets.
Eden shared the stage with Microsoft* to show off the Windows 8* operating system working and running several applications on Intel-based Ultrabook devices. They highlighted the broad collaboration between the two companies and pointed to the future opportunities that Windows 8* will present across multiple compute devices such as tablets, hybrids and new form factors like Ultrabook.
Eden also turned the spotlight on Thunderbolt technology, a new, high-speed, dual-protocol I/O technology designed for performance, simplicity and flexibility. Thunderbolt enables high-speed storage, media capture devices and displays to all connect via a single, thin cable. He gave attendees an early look at a prototype with Thunderbolt technology running the Microsoft Windows 7* operating system.
Powering the Next Wave of Ultrabook Devices in 2012
Eden gave the IDF audience a preview of the processor that will power 2012 Ultrabook devices -- the 3rd generation Intel Core processor (codenamed "Ivy Bridge"). Expected to be available in systems in the first half of 2012, it will deliver greater performance and energy efficiency. Intel also redesigned the processor graphics to provide better video and gaming experiences.
Eden previewed six pre-production Ultrabook designs that are based on 3rd generation Intel Core processors and said he expects a large selection of devices for people worldwide in 2012.
To provide the peace of mind that people desire, security features will be built into Ultrabook devices with processor-based Intel® Identity Protection technology and Intel Anti-Theft. Building on the capabilities offered today, next-generation Ultrabooks, notebooks and desktop computers can benefit from the collaborative effort between Intel andMcAfee* to jointly develop a McAfee anti-theft service for Ultrabooks. Available in 2012, the McAfee solution will be the first to take advantage of unique, Intel chip-level technologies and will provide device and data protection for consumers such as device lock, data wipe and location tracking.
Challenging the entire personal computing industry to work together to deliver the thin, light and most complete computing devices, Eden touched on the component technologies including panels, keyboards, battery technology and chassis that require further innovation to meet the Ultrabook vision. Leading the innovation charge, Intel demonstrated a new laptop power savings technology that limits screen refreshes when the Ultrabook screen is static, thereby saving energy. LG Display, a leading panel vendor, will be one of the first to bring a power-optimized panel self refresh display to market for Ultrabooks using its Shuriken Technology* that features edge to edge design, smaller footprint and low power.
The Vision of Ultrabook Realized
The Ultrabook vision is a multi-year, industry-wide effort that will roll out in three phases. Eden said phase one is in process and will be realized this holiday season with the introduction of the first Ultrabook devices, while phase two will begin with the launch of Intel's 3rd generation Core processors in the first half of 2012. In 2013, Intel will introduce its next-generation, 22nm "Haswell" processor, signaling phase three of the transition to Ultrabook devices. Eden demonstrated "Haswell" running multiple applications at one time on stage at IDF. Devices powered by the future chip will ultimately transform the personal computing experience as a result of the new levels of power savings in the processor that will help provide more than 10 days of connected standby battery life, as well as give people the most complete and satisfying computing experience.

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
Intel debuts enterprise-grade Multi-Level Cell (MLC) SATA SSD Intel SSD 710 Series featuring high endurance, performance and reliability.
Intel SSD 710 Series uses compute-quality 25nm MLC NAND flash memory in 100GB, 200GB and 300GB capacities.
Intel SSD 710 with High Endurance Technology offers Single-Level Cell (SLC) SSD endurance with MLC value for optimal data center storage.
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 14, 2011 – Intel Corporation announced today its latest solid-state drive (SSD), the Intel® Solid-State Drive 710 Series, a purpose-built Multi-Level Cell (MLC) data center SSD and replacement for the Intel® X25-E Extreme SSD. While the Intel X25-E was based on more expensive but highly reliable Single-Level Cell (SLC) NAND flash memory, the Intel SSD 710 uses compute-quality Intel 25-nanomenter (nm) MLC NAND flash memory with Intel High Endurance Technology (HET) to deliver the endurance and performance necessary for data center, financial services, embedded, Internet portal, search engine and other demanding storage and server applications, but at a greater value.
"The Intel SSD 710 Series gives enterprise data center and embedded users extreme endurance and performance, enabled by Intel's High Endurance Technology based on Intel 25nm MLC NAND technology," said Rob Crooke, Intel vice president and general manager of the Intel Non-Volatile Memory Solutions Group. "Intel SSDs are widely deployed in the data center due to their performance, reliability and value. The NETGEAR N900 router, available now, leaps ahead with up to 900 megabits per second of combined WiFi speed and greater WiFi range for maximum performance with even the most demanding tasks, such as wireless 3D and HD video streaming, multiplayer gaming and backing up big files.
With up to 50 percent more speed in the 2.4 GHz band than the current generation of 750 Mbps routers, the NETGEAR N900 can support a full 450 Mbps in both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. The NETGEAR N900's six highly sensitive internal antennas, boosted by ultra-high-power radio amplifiers, provide more WiFi range - and more wireless speed at any given distance - than any other competing home router available today.
Beyond speed and range, the NETGEAR N900 offers a long list of advanced features that make home networks more useful and easier to manage. There are two USB ports, for example, to simultaneously share a printer and a USB hard drive or flash drive across the home network. Saving and retrieving files through the network from a USB drive is up to 30 percent faster with the NETGEAR N900 than any router now on the market, thanks to a more powerful processor.
Setting up the NETGEAR N900 is quick and easy. There's no CD required for installation, and the router can be configured through a browser on PCs, Macs, smartphones, the iPad and other tablets.
Also bundled with the NETGEAR N900 WiFi router is the NETGEAR GenieTM, a free utility for PCs and Macs, that presents a simple dashboard for monitoring, controlling and repairing home networks; viewing devices connected to the router through a network map; and accessing many router features.
NETGEAR Live Parental Controls on the NETGEAR N900 give parents a centralized, flexible and reliable way to establish what web sites their children visit and what times of day they can go online for all devices on the network, including Windows PCs, Macs, smartphones and tablets. Children and teenagers no longer need Mom and Dad looking over their shoulders, parents have peace of mind and - best of all - it comes absolutely free, with no subscription fee.
Among the additional premium features of the NETGEAR N900 are:
ReadySHARE Printer - USB printers plugged into the NETGEAR N900 can be accessed by any computer linked to the home network. There's no need to buy a new printer with built-in WiFi to print wirelessly.
Guest network access. Through the browser interface or the NETGEAR Genie utility, it's simple to set up a guest network, so visitors can go online without having to be given the home network password and without gaining access to computers, printers, storage drives and other home-network devices.
DLNA. A USB hard drive plugged into the router becomes a powerful DLNA media server for sharing entertainment content stored on the drive - such as video, music and photos - to DLNA-certified, Internet-ready consumer electronic devices including televisions, Blu-rayTM players and game consoles.
Advanced Quality of Service. By prioritizing video streams over other home network traffic, advanced Quality of Service (QoS) provides the best possible viewing experience for online video.
Gigabit wired Ethernet. There are four high-speed gigabit Ethernet ports for ultra-fast wired connections.
Security. The router supports WPA and WPA2 protocols for WiFi, has double firewall (SPI and NAT) protection against Internet threats, and provides Denial of Service (DoS) attack prevention.
Scheduled WiFi off. To conserve power, the WiFi radios inside the N900 can be turned off on a custom schedule. In an office setting, for example, WiFi could be turned off automatically during weekends.
Access Point mode. Through the browser interface, the N900 can be set to function as a WiFi access point, which can be connected to any router. This allows the N900 to connect to a gateway from an Internet service provider, for example, to expand household WiFi coverage and significantly increase home network speed among networked devices.
Usage meter. Monitors Internet data consumption and can send customized alerts when usage is close to monthly bandwidth limits, avoiding costly overage fees for those with metered service plans.
"NETGEAR is very proud to introduce the world's most advanced wireless home router," said Sandeep Harpalani, Senior Product Line Manager for Wireless Networking at NETGEAR. "The NETGEAR N900 stands alone in delivering ultimate wireless speed, range and premium features, while the router's easy-to-use browser-based installation and NETGEAR Genie will help even the most non-technical users explore and enjoy all the possibilities of a modern home network."

Intel and Google to optimize future releases of the Android™ platform for Intel’s family of low power Atom™ processors.
Intel and Google to optimize future releases of the Android™ platform for Intel’s family of low power Atom™ processors.
CEO revealed how advances in silicon technology and platform engineering will reduce idle platform power for the “Haswell” chip in 2013, lowering it by more than 20 times over current technology designs.
INTEL DEVELOPER FORUM, San Francisco, Sept. 13, 2011 – Intel Corporation today announced a new effort with Google* that aims to accelerate Intel’s business in smartphones.
The company also revealed that Intel’s engineers are working on a new class of platform power management for Ultrabooks™ that will aid in the delivery of always-on-always-connected computing.
Intel’s President and CEO, Paul Otellini, made the announcements during the opening keynote of the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco.
“Computing is in a constant state of evolution,” said Otellini, describing the opportunities and challenges facing Intel and the industry. “The unprecedented demand for computing from the client devices to the cloud is creating significant opportunity for the industry. Intel is innovating and working with our partners to deliver computing experiences that are more mobile, secure and seamless. I’m excited about the new experiences that will be created across a range of devices, and we’re just getting started. ”
Growth in New Market Segments
Addressing a major corporate goal of growing Intel’s business in adjacent computing market segments, Otellini discussed the company’s recent efforts to accelerate its smartphone business and showcased a form factor reference design based on Intel® Atom™ processor, and running the Android™ platform.
Otellini then introduced Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President of Mobile at Google*. The two executives outlined plans to enable and optimize future releases of the Android™ platform for Intel’s family of low power Atom™ processors. The joint effort is designed to speed time-to-market of Intel technology-based smartphones running the Android platform.
“Our collaboration with Google will bring a powerful new capability to market that helps accelerate industry innovation, adoption and choice,” said Otellini. “I’m excited by the possibilities of this collaboration. It will enable our customers to bring exciting new products and user experiences to market that harness the combined potential of Intel architecture and the Android platform.”
Today’s announcement builds upon the two companies’ recent joint initiatives to enable Intel architecture on Google products. Joint initiatives include Chrome OS, Google TV, and the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) and Native Development Kit (NDK).
Pushing the Limits of Low Power for Ultrabooks™ and Beyond
Otellini predicted that Ultrabook systems will provide the most satisfying and complete computing experience. The company is working with industry partners to deliver mainstream-priced products beginning this holiday season for this new category of lighter, sleeker compute companions.
Intel’s CEO said the company’s engineers will further accelerate Ultrabook innovationwith Intel’s “Ivy Bridge” 22nm technology early next year with the help of the company’s revolutionary 3-D Tri-gate transistors.
He highlighted the broad enabling work between Intel and Microsoft, and pointed to the future opportunities that Windows 8 will present across tablets, hybrid devices and new form factors such as Ultrabooks™.
Otellini also described the new class of platform power management in development for the 2013 “Haswell” products for Ultrabooks. The advances in silicon technology and platform engineering are expected to reduce idle platform power by more than 20 times over current designs without compromising computing performance. Otellini said he expects that this design change, combined with industry collaboration, will lead to more than 10 days of connected standby battery life by 2013. The advancements will aid in delivery of always-on-always-connected computing where Ultrabooks stay connected when in standby mode, keeping the e-mail, social media and digital content up-to-date.
Looking further into the future, Otellini predicted that platform power innovation will reach levels that are difficult to imagine today. Intel’s researchers have created a chip that could allow a computer to power up on a solar cell the size of a postage stamp. Referred to as a “Near Threshold Voltage Core,” this Intel architecture research chip pushes the limits of transistor technology to tune power use to extremely low levels.
Securing the Next Billion Computing Devices
Otellini was joined on stage by Candace Worley, senior vice president and general manager, Endpoint Security at McAfee. She discussed how Intel and McAfee have been working together on a range of innovative hardware assisted software security solutions.
The two executives reinforced the growing need for continued investment and innovation as billions of new computing devices are expected to connect to the Internet and with one another.
Worley introduced McAfee’s new DeepSAFE technology platform that works with hardware capabilities found in the Intel® Core™ i3, i5 and i7 processors. DeepSAFE technology provides new levels of security and a different vantage point by operating below the operating system. This technology will launch in a McAfee enterprise product later this year.
Otellini announced that Intel is working with McAfee on a roadmap of security solutions that extend across the spectrum of computing from embedded devices to the cloud.
Seamless, Consistent, Interoperable Experiences
With computing continuing to evolve, Otellini emphasized the need for seamless, consistent and interoperable experiences across a variety of devices. To help support this vision, Intel is now building capabilities into a broad array of devices including Ultrabooks and all-in-one computers. Otellini demonstrated several new capabilities that will be available on Acer*, Lenovo*, and Toshiba* systems later this holiday season.

The company also revealed that Intel's engineers are working on a new class of platform power management for UltrabooksTM that will aid in the delivery of always-on-always-connected computing.
Intel's President and CEO, Paul Otellini, made the announcements during the opening keynote of the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco.
"Computing is in a constant state of evolution," said Otellini, describing the opportunities and challenges facing Intel and the industry. "The unprecedented demand for computing from the client devices to the cloud is creating significant opportunity for the industry. Intel is innovating and working with our partners to deliver computing experiences that are more mobile, secure and seamless. I'm excited about the new experiences that will be created across a range of devices, and we're just getting started. "
Growth in New Market Segments
Addressing a major corporate goal of growing Intel's business in adjacent computing market segments, Otellini discussed the company's recent efforts to accelerate its smartphone business and showcased a form factor reference design based on Intel® AtomTM processor, and running the AndroidTM platform.
Otellini then introduced Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President of Mobile at Google*. The two executives outlined plans to enable and optimize future releases of the AndroidTM platform for Intel's family of low power AtomTM processors. The joint effort is designed to speed time-to-market of Intel technology-based smartphones running the Android platform.
"Our collaboration with Google will bring a powerful new capability to market that helps accelerate industry innovation, adoption and choice," said Otellini. "I'm excited by the possibilities of this collaboration. It will enable our customers to bring exciting new products and user experiences to market that harness the combined potential of Intel architecture and the Android platform."
Today's announcement builds upon the two companies' recent joint initiatives to enable Intel architecture on Google products. Joint initiatives include Chrome OS, Google TV, and the Android Software Development Kit (SDK) and Native Development Kit (NDK).
Pushing the Limits of Low Power for UltrabooksTM and Beyond
Otellini predicted that Ultrabook systems will provide the most satisfying and complete computing experience. The company is working with industry partners to deliver mainstream-priced products beginning this holiday season for this new category of lighter, sleeker compute companions.
Intel's CEO said the company's engineers will further accelerate Ultrabook innovation with Intel's "Ivy Bridge" 22nm technology early next year with the help of the company's revolutionary 3-D Tri-gate transistors.
He highlighted the broad enabling work between Intel and Microsoft, and pointed to the future opportunities that Windows 8 will present across tablets, hybrid devices and new form factors such as UltrabooksTM.
Otellini also described the new class of platform power management in development for the 2013 "Haswell" products for Ultrabooks.
Intel's researchers have created a chip that could allow a computer to power up on a solar cell the size of a postage stamp. Referred to as a "Near Threshold Voltage Core," this Intel architecture research chip pushes the limits of transistor technology to tune power use to extremely low levels.
Worley introduced McAfee's new DeepSAFE technology platform that works with hardware capabilities found in the Intel® CoreTM i3, i5 and i7 processors.

This solar-powered charging station is just the latest in a long line of projects that Kyocera has been involved in that bring innovative alternative energy solutions to the market. For example, Kyocera solar modules also produce power while providing shade for cars at the Solar Grove™ in San Diego, California. In Japan, Kyocera introduced the Solar Cycle Station for charging electric bicycles; as well as the Eco-Shell co-developed with Sekisui Jushi Corporation — a multi-purpose solar-powered shelter for use in public places where shelters provide cover against the sun and rain such as bus & taxi stops, benches and walkway coverings.
Electric-powered automobiles and bicycles are becoming increasingly popular in Germany as they provide a convenient and eco-friendly method of transportation. As a result, there is a growing need for charging stations to meet increased use. Furthermore, this solar-powered charging station is not only environmentally friendly but also economical; currently, charging at this location is free of charge to the public. What is Toshiba HDD 3D Impact Sensor technology?
We're constantly seeing new features that claim to make a real impact on how we use technology in our everyday lives, but seldom has it been as true from a literal point of view as with Toshiba's HDD 3D Impact Sensor feature. Read on as we focus on how this clever technology can prolong the life of your laptop.
Of all the differences we choose to focus on between desktop PCs and laptops, one we seldom like to talk about is that while there's pretty much no chance of you ever dropping your desktop PC on the floor, the moment you move a laptop around you're running the risk of an unfortunate accident happening – no matter how careful you are to avoid it.
There are a good few common sense steps we'd advise anyone to follow to minimise the risk, but better than all of those is Toshiba's HDD 3D Impact Sensor, quite simply because it kicks into gear when things have gone wrong despite all of that.
The hard drive impact sensor comprises a combination of hardware and software to provide your first line of defence in the case of unforeseen drops, dings and knocks. The moment the system detects sudden movements, such as when your laptop starts to fall off the table in front of you, it parks the heads of your hard drive to make sure no damage occurs to your precious data or the physical drive itself.
Best of all, you can customise the Impact Sensor based on how you know you're going to be using your laptop. If, for instance, you know you're going to be anchored to a desk for a long period, you can dial down its protection to a minimum for maximum performance.
But if you're going to be up and down all afternoon with your laptop in your bag, the maximum protection setting is there to make sure nothing unexpected goes wrong.

Many U.S. Schools Adding iPad, Trimming Textbooks
Stephanie Reitz of Associated Press reports on the growing use of iPad in public secondary school classrooms this fall, noting a “move away from textbooks in favor of the lightweight tablet computers.” Educator benefits range from using iPad for interactive demonstrations of math solutions to teaching children with autism spectrum disorders and learning disabilities. Principal Patrick Larkin of Boston’s Burlington High School calls iPad a better long-term investment than textbooks, saying, “The bottom line is that the iPads will give our kids a chance to use much more relevant materials.”

Connect More Devices in More Locations with Belkin’s New Range of High-Performance Routers
Belkin has today announced the launch of a new range of routers and modem routers designed to let you do more with more devices, in more locations. Engineered with Belkin's exclusive MultiBeam technology for maximum speed and coverage, the range shows Belkin's commitment to developing high-performance networking solutions to support the increasing numbers of wireless devices throughout the home.
"People are adding more and more connected devices to their home networks, from smartphones and tablets, to Internet TVs and gaming consoles. The type of internet traffic is also changing, with less simple email and web browsing, and more demand for streaming high-definition movies, downloading music and playing games online. This means having a router which gives you a strong signal and a range that covers every corner of your home is more important than ever", said Bart Bomers, Belkin's EMEA Business Unit Manager for Networking. "Belkin's newest routers are designed to give you the strongest Internet signal over the widest distance in your home so your devices work where you want to be, not only where your router is."
All of Belkin's new routers feature MultiBeam, an exclusive technology that provides greater throughput at wider distances. This ensures higher data rates, faster speeds, and stronger wireless signals throughout the home to minimise dead spots and enable you to connect multiple devices in more places. The P7 Antennae featured in the new range offers greater coverage than other routers, but also a more usable coverage footprint.
Many standard antennae offer a coverage footprint which is wide, but flat. That can mean that while there is a signal present over a wide area at the same level as the router, users above or below it may get little or no signal. In a house this may mean being unable to connect on floors above or below the router.
Belkin's exclusive MultiBeam technology offers unrivalled coverage by using a mixture of specialised antennae to offer the largest and most usable coverage footprint, above and below as well as on the same level as the router. In addition, the Implicit Beam Forming feature on the N750 DB allows the router to focus radio power on the clients which are actively using the connection at any given time.
The Belkin N450 DB, N600 DB and N750 DB routers also feature dual-band channels to eliminate interference and optimise performance for bandwidth-intensive applications such as high-definition video streaming. All the products in the range come with Belkin's Easy Setup, designed to get you from box to browsing in three easy steps, and pre-configured encryption settings for built-in wireless security.

Sony showcases environmental highlights at IFA 2011
Sony will reveal a lower carbon impact energy storage solution, a Bravia TV featuring Sony Recycled Plastic and the new energy efficient Sony BDP-S185 Blu-ray disc player
Sony will demonstrate a range of innovative environmental products and programmes at IFA, the global consumer electronics show taking place from 2 – 7 September in Berlin. From recycled plastics to lower carbon impact energy storage solutions, viewers will be able to sample a range of eco highlights from Sony.
The sustainability focused area of the Sony IFA stand will be powered by a prototype energy storage system which can draw electricity from the grid during off-peak hours and store up 2.4kWh of power for use at any time. With a lithium-ion battery that handles energy more efficiently than conventional Pb and NiCd batteries, it also saves on overall power consumption.
IFA visitors will also see the first European Sony television (BRAVIA 22EX310) to feature SoRPlas (Sony Recycled Plastic). The SoRPlas material is 99 per cent composed from used DVDs and TV optical sheets and has the highest proportion of recycled material of any plastic in the world. Its unique production process cuts CO2 emissions by almost 80 per cent compared to conventional virgin plastics. At the same time, SoRPlas itself is more durable and more easily recycled.
Further efficiencies are shown in the new Sony BDP-S185 Blu-ray disc player, which uses 47 per cent less power than its predecessor and is wrapped in a unit approximately one third narrower. The smaller size means more efficient transport packing and a lower unit weight, cutting shipment-related carbon emissions by 40 per cent.
Visitors of the Sony IFA stand will also be able to view the prototype of the final concept to emerge from Sony’s innovative crowdsourcing platform, Open Planet Ideas. “+U” is a prototype application, created in collaboration with a UK volunteering charity. The mobile phone application has been created to deliver new potential to combine real world volunteering opportunities, with social and gaming incentives.
These are just a few of the ways that Sony is working to minimise its impact on the environment and bring about positive change. To view these products in action at IFA, please visit the Sony Booth, Hall 4.2, Messe. Please see www.ifa-berlin.com for tickets and further information.
