ASUS Releases the Coolest Passive Card on the Market
New HD 6770 DirectCU Silent graphics card offers revolutionary cooling, paving the way for 0dB silent multimedia and gaming performance
September 2011 - with the release of the new HD 6770 DirectCU Silent, ASUS has deployed the most powerful and advanced fanless graphics cards available. Running totally silent and 16%* cooler than generic passive designs, the ASUS DirectCU Silent series increases thermal performance and offers consumers a more reliable and longer lasting experience that meets every graphics need, from casual multimedia to dedicated gaming.
DirectCU Silent technology offers 95%* larger heatsinks for 16%* cooler performance
ASUS thermal engineers have developed exclusive DirectCU cooling technology, integrating direct-contact copper heat pipes that touch the GPU core for faster and more effective heat dissipation, and thus lower temperatures and better performance. Based on these principles, ASUS engineers have created the most effective 0dB silent graphics cards available. DirectCU Silent designs have been applied on the GT 430, GT 440, GTS 450 and HD 6670 previously, and now on the HD 6770 model. Through intricate material processing and intelligent molding, the heatsinks in DirectCU Silent cards offer up to 95%* larger surface area and run around 16%* cooler than conventional passive cards, resulting in more stable performance and longer lasting products.
Super Alloy Power enhances product longevity and performance
Based on a proprietary alloy mix developed in-house by ASUS, Super Alloy Power involves filling power delivery components with a high endurance compound that can better resist heat. Super Alloy Power components lead to 15%* faster performance, a wider overclocking margin, and products that last 2.5* times longer than generic graphics cards.
Delivering cool and stable gaming performance
The DirectX® 11-compatible ASUS HD 6770 DirectCU Silent features 800 stream processors and 40 texture units, plus 1GB of GDDR5 video memory. This means it is more than able to handle HD gaming with details and effects set to medium or higher, which was unheard of with previous silent cards. The HD 6770 DirectCU Silent is therefore an excellent choice for consumers who require a quiet computing environment, and at the same time are unwilling to sacrifice potent multimedia and gaming capabilities.

This area will be designed for attendees to relax and exchange ideas, with a series of interactive quizzes helping participants to draw up their “technology profile” to find out whether they are laptop or tablet people.
This initiative forms part of Lenovo’s worldwide “For those who do” campaign. Lenovo considers that technology is not an end in itself but should serve a purpose and help users achieve their goals.
The “Do with Lenovo” Corner will also be the meeting point for Forum participants and Lenovo managers, a place where they can talk informally about diversity, leadership and innovation.
The Diversity Club
This year the Women’s Forum has created the Diversity Club For Business which brings together companies which are engaged in the promotion of Diversity, one of founding values of the Forum. The initiative is in partnership with the Boston Consulting Group and Lenovo staff have taken part in working groups in Paris and London on the theme of “Leadership for the 21st Century.” This subject, with its close links between diversity and business, will consider the profile of the leaders of tomorrow.
ASUS Launches Xonar Essence One Hi-Fi USB Digital to Analog Converter and Headphone Amplifier
The world's first DAC with 8x symmetrical upsampling technology
September, 2011 - With most modern audio signals stored in digital format, the ASUS Xonar team has catered to audiophiles' needs and launched its first hi-fi USB digital-to-analog converter (DAC), the Xonar Essence One. It is an industry-leading high-end USB DAC with the world's first 8x symmetrical upsampling technology, while also featuring a 120dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), audiophile-class headphone AMP and eleven operational amplifier (op-amp) design for distinct tonal customization.
Hi-Fi audio achieved with the world's first 8x symmetrical upsampling technology
While common upsampling USB DACs indistinguishably transfer various audio sources to 192kHz, the Xonar Essence One upsamples 44.1/88.2/176.4kHz input to 352.8kHz and 48/96/192kHz input to 384kHz symmetrically (Note: 44.1*8=352.8kHz; 48*8=384kHz). As a result, data volume is also increased by upsampling the bit-rate to 32bit, corresponding to the original content and faithfully preserving the details of the user's music collection.
Extreme audio clarity with 120dB SNR and a dedicated power supply
The average SNR, of other USB DACs is about 110dB, but with an extremely high 120dB SNR, the Xonar Essence One provides audiophiles with clearer sounds, enabling minute sound details to be heard while significantly reducing noise levels. A dedicated power supply ensures that clean power is delivered so the sharpest sound is heard, with excellent immunity to noise from the AC line.
Eleven swappable OP-amps for customizable tonal characters
The Xonar Essence One features a fully swappable op-amp design, unprecedented for a high-end USB DAC. An op-amp is the key part in a DAC that amplifies the analog signal and affects tonal characteristics, such as darkness or brightness of sound or the overall sound image. The Xonar Essence One allows the user to swap every op-amp that is on board, for a truly customizable sound.

Kingston Digital Introduces New Ultra-Secure USB Flash Drive to Further Protect Data for Enterprises and Government Organisations
Sunbury-on-Thames - September 28, 2011 -- Kingston Digital Europe Ltd, an affiliate of Kingston Technology Company Inc., the independent world leader in memory products, today announced the Kingston DataTraveler® 6000 (DT6000) USB Flash drive, which protects sensitive data with Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 Level 3 validation and 100-percent encryption. For financial service organisations and government agencies that need the strongest data protection in mobile storage devices, the DT6000 meets data-at-rest regulations and is the most secure USB Flash drive available on the market.
The Kingston® DT6000 utilises patented Secured by SpyrusTM technology which supports 256-bit AES hardware-based encryption using XTS block cipher mode. XTS is the latest generation technology that provides much stronger protection than other block cipher modes such as CBC and ECB modes. The DT6000 also uses ‘military-grade' elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), which is recommended by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) as part of its Suite B set of cryptographic algorithms.
Organisations spend millions of dollars annually on network security to thwart hackers and other outsider threats. Frequent news stories show that security breaches associated with USB drives are more often the result of negligence (lost drives) and a lack of security policy, education and enforcement rather than malicious intent. In other words, having an unencrypted USB drive is a potential data breach in one's pocket.
"While enterprises and government agencies need to be able to provide remote and mobile employees access to sensitive and confidential data, establishing security policies and deploying USB products that prevent data loss is as important and immediate as an organisation's network security," said Jim Selby, Manager - European Product Marketing, Kingston Digital Europe®.. "Using non-secure USB drives makes organisations vulnerable to data loss and breaches that can affect the company's credibility with its employees, customers and partners. The DT6000 is the most secure USB Flash drive available and will meet the most stringent corporate or government requirements."
While other companies concentrate on security around cloud-based services, Kingston keeps its focus on the hardware security side. Our longstanding relationships with controller and NAND Flash suppliers as well as global distribution capabilities ensure a steady supply of products to meet customer needs. Evaluation samples are readily available to potential customers.

Lenovo ThinkVision Monitors See Gold 11 Times with UL Environment Rating
Largest Lineup of UL Environment Certified Monitors Available. New Trio of ThinkVision Displays Enhance Business Productivity
Hook, UK - September 27, 2011: Lenovo announced today that 11 ThinkVision monitors are now rated Gold under the UL Environment's Sustainable Product Certification (SPC) program for their environmental attributes, making Lenovo the PC-maker with the largest portfolio of UL Environment Gold-rated products. The Gold-rated monitors include the new ThinkVision LT1952, LT2252p and LT2452p wide monitors also announced today. These LED monitors not only meet sustainability standards, but they provide business professionals a brilliant visual experience thanks to the monitors' high resolution, variety of ports and convenient, adjustable stands.
"Our ThinkVision monitors demonstrate that business performance and design for the environment can go hand in hand," said Eric Yu, executive director and general manager, Visuals Business Unit, Lenovo. "Our latest trio offers strikingly crisp and clear images while maintaining extraordinary energy efficiency in a user-friendly design."
Raising Standards in Sustainability
The UL Environment SPC Gold certification indicates a product has met the most stringent and prestigious of three levels of compliance in the industry-wide sustainability standard for laptops, IEEE 1680.1. UL Environment tested the Gold-rated ThinkVision monitors to several specifications for the reduction or elimination of environmentally-sensitive materials in product and packaging, energy conservation, end-of-life management and corporate environmental practices. For example, the ThinkVision LT1952p and LT2252p monitors use up to 85 percent post consumer recycled content and exceed Energy Star 5.0 requirements for low power consumption in standby and off modes. Additionally ThinkVision monitors are shipped in recyclable packaging that is also made from recycled materials.
To determine compliance with the IEEE 1680 sustainability standard, UL Environment assessed product documentation and records, physically examined product samples, independently tested the product for compliance to ENERGY STAR® requirements and conducted onsite audits of manufacturing facilities. Additional UL Environment Gold-rated products include the ThinkPad X1 and T420 laptops and ThinkVision L1951p, L2250p, LT1421 and L197w monitors.
We're in a time of heightened interest in green products, however, some environmental claims in the market are over exaggerated," said Stephen H Wenc, president, UL Environment. "Having an independent third party like UL Environment test and verify the accuracy of environmental claims goes a long way in boosting consumer confidence, and Lenovo has taken a leadership position by having the most products certified of any PC-maker."
Additionally, the new ThinkVision LT1952p wide, LT2252p and LT2452p monitors meet other environmental certifications: They are TCO Edge 1.1 certified, meet the requirements for Energy Star 5.0 and are EPEAT Gold-rated.

Intel Labs Announces Latest Science and Technology Center Focused on Next Generation of Pervasive Computing
NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
Intel Labs announces its fifth Intel Science and Technology Center focused on pervasive computing.
The center is hosted at the University of Washington in collaboration with five other universities.
Intel's collaboration with university researchers will accelerate the development of next-generation technologies that can learn, adapt and interact to provide consumers with a personalized experience.
Initial research is focused on three concept applications: mobile health and wellbeing; task management systems; and a family coordination system.
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 26, 2011 – The newest Intel Science and Technology Center (ISTC) will focus on delivering technologies that offer a richer, more personalized experience to consumers of the future. By creating and funding an ecosystem of leading researchers in the field and providing a collaborative environment, Intel Corporation and its partners' goal is to accelerate the development of next-generation technologies capable of continuously learning and adapting to consumers' needs.
The new Intel ISTC for pervasive computing is the fifth center to open this year and underscores Intel's commitment to establishing and funding the collaboration of university research to fuel innovation in key areas. Earlier this year Intel announced ISTCs for visual computing, secure computing, cloud computing and embedded computing.
"The next generation of pervasive computing systems will continuously learn environments, objects, schedules and preferences of their users," said Limor Fix, Intel's director of academic programs and research. "These future apps will be capable of supporting complex tasks such as cooking a soufflé or building a complicated piece of furniture. Consumers will have a far richer experience than the technologies of today can offer and will be able to spend far more time achieving their goals than figuring out how to make the technology work."
Pervasive Computing Research
The ISTC for pervasive computing research will focus on developing applications that are organized into the following themes: low-power sensing and communication; understanding human state and activities; and personalization and adaptation. To ensure the trustworthiness and security of the systems involved and to safeguard privacy, researchers who focus on these challenges will be involved in all of the center's projects. The center will explore task spaces that interact seamlessly with users by combining multiple cues such as a person's context, gestures and voice, and that provide assistance through multiple output modes such as audio and projected imagery. Ultimately, future systems will support applications that have much deeper awareness of users and their activities, context and goals. They will be able to learn and adapt continuously to consumer habits, routines and preferences.
Research at the new ISTC will center largely on developing new algorithms to extract complex context and activity information from sensor data. For instance, the algorithms will not only sense that someone is in the kitchen but that the person is slicing ingredients for a particular recipe and whether the cuts are too thick for the recipe being used.
Pervasive Computing Applications
Improving consumers' physical and emotional wellbeing, assisting in the coordination of busy lives and enhancing the home functionality are high-value application areas. The ISTC for pervasive computing will develop three concept applications:
Mobile Health and Wellbeing: To improve physical and emotional wellbeing, the center will explore developing technologies to help consumers identify, manage and reduce stress and anxiety in their daily lives. Researchers aim to develop mobile systems that can understand the complex context of their users' lives – both in and outside the home – and learn about their routines, interactions and stressors.
Family Coordination System: Building a smart home system that can learn, recognize and track the everyday activities of all members of the family. The system will track activities at different levels and use activity information to assist families in planning.
Task Space, Smart Kitchen: A demo space that illustrates how pervasive computing can help with physical tasks that don't typically involve a computer -- cooking a complex recipe or building a piece of furniture, for instance.
With the University of Washington operating as the hub, the ISTC for pervasive computing combines researchers from six U.S. research universities including Georgia Institute of Technology, Cornell University, University of Rochester, UCLA and Stanford University. The ISTC for pervasive computing is co-led by Dieter Fox, associate professor of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington, and Anthony LaMarca, a senior scientist at Intel.

It’s data that continues to drive the industry, says IDC
We blogged about Q2 2010’s data growth last September, and it’s hard to believe it’s been another year already! And maybe more surprising to some is that there’s not been any “doom and gloom” in our industry this year – even with a challenging economy – as IDC has reported another year of explosive storage growth.
Let’s look at the numbers.
During Q2 of 2011, disk storage systems grew roughly 10 percent, to $7.5 billion, compared to revenues of $6.8 billion for Q2 of 2010. That’s a nice trend indeed for the industry.
But what those numbers don’t reveal are the differences in capacity growth, as systems sold a year ago will obviously have less storage. So from the perspective of capacity, sales were up 47 percent compared with the previous year. That’s 5,353 petabytes sold for the quarter versus 3,645 petabytes for Q2 2010. This squares with the trend certainly that storage needs are exploding with no end in sight– a common theme that we write about here.
When looking at the top vendors selling storage, the battle for the top position had historically been between HP and EMC, and HP took top honors last year. This year, however, EMC gets the number one spot. While some of EMC’s victory can be attributed to acquisitions, EMC is no slouch when it comes to storage. In fact, HP just edged out EMC with the top spot last year by only .3 percent. This year, EMC’s lead is a commanding one at 21.6 percent versus HP’s at 19.2 percent.
With another year of strong storage growth overall, do these figures mesh well with what you see in the storage market for your business? We’re very interested in knowing your thoughts.

Another beautiful Kyocera model in this month’s Tatler
The model we refer to of course, is the sophisticated, Kyocera Mita KM3050.
Appropriately enough under the feature headline:
‘Less dosh, still posh.’
With up to 30ppm in A4 mono and up to 20ppm in A3 Mono. The KM3050 is very classy out of the box, multi functional device offering standard copy, print and colour scan.
And since its launch has received rave reviews from the labs and users alike:
“All in all, the Kyocera KM-3050 is amazing, due to its complex and exhaustive features and offers reliability, versatility and flexibility all under one single case.”
“This is a great black and white copier/printer. Scanner does colour scan too. Been very happy with this device from the day it was installed.”
And, appropriately enough considering the subject of this post:
“Another great model from Kyocera. Good and reliable.”
Tatler think it’s the perfect accessory for their photo-shoot, may we suggest it’s also the perfect accessory for your office?

AVADirect Now Offers Intel 710 Series Enterprise Solid State Disks
AVADirect has recently added the new line of Intel 710 Series solid state disks to our already-existing extensive line-up. This marks a new day and age were companies like Intel are beginning to blur the lines between mainstream and Enterprise. Reason being: these solid state disks are manufactured for RAID use.
Now, most of you may already be thinking "Well, I have read/seen SSDs being used in RAID 0". Technically, RAID 0 is not even considered a RAID array setup. Due to the way it is configured it is classified as RAID, but you do not need Enterprise level storage solutions. For those that wish to have RAID 1, 5, and 10 with SSDs you now have a solution that is manufactured for official RAID use! This is mainly why the read/write performance is not the best out there, rated at 270/210 MB/s. , but there's give and take; give to the reliability while taking from the performance. The price tags for these SSDs are typical for enterprise-level hardware, but that's expected. Feel free to check them out on our site, and add them to your configuration of choice!

In today's technology-enabled world, owning a number of internet-enabled devices or computers has become commonplace. Whatever we use them for, it is likely that between them they store a large amount of personal information, including passwords, home addresses, web browsing history and photos. For many people installing comprehensive security is an afterthought, which can leave all that personal information unprotected and vulnerable to cybercriminals and malicious software.
With Kaspersky ONE, users only have to think about security once. Created by Europe's leading developer of IT security software, Kaspersky ONE is the first product available that represents a universal, one-stop-shop for personal security, protecting any combination of PCs, Macs, Android tablets and smartphones.
"Your personal information is immensely valuable to cybercriminals, and very precious to you," said Eugene Kaspersky, CEO and Founder, Kaspersky Lab. "Keeping it safe requires adequate security and we appreciate that for many casual IT users, selecting and installing the right security software can seem quite a daunting prospect. That is why we developed Kaspersky ONE. With Kaspersky ONE Universal Security, you can easily protect all your IT kit with a single, simple solution. We draw on our market-leading expertise to keep abreast with the latest threats and risks, leaving you free to enjoy the features and capability of your latest gadgets."

Users can change the set-up as they upgrade and change their devices.
Kaspersky ONE is compatible with devices running Windows® or Mac OS X®, Android, Symbian, Windows Mobile (6.5 and below) or BlackBerry smartphones and Android-based tablets.

California School Wins Top Intel Schools of Distinction Award
WASHINGTON, D.C., Sept. 20, 2011 –Valley Christian Junior High in San Jose, Calif. took top honors tonight in the Intel Schools of Distinction contest. Intel's Schools of Distinction awards program honors K-12 schools that have some of the most successful educational programs in the country. Schools recognized for this award have demonstrated excellence in math and science education and their ability to promote students' problem solving, critical thinking and collaboration skills, areas called 21st century skills by educators.
Other schools winning big included Byron Senior High (Byron, Minn.), Crellin Elementary School (Oakland, Md.), Farmington View Elementary (Hillsboro, Ore.), Lynbrook High School (San Jose, Calif.) and Preston Middle School (Fort Collins, Colo.).
"By honoring the Intel Schools of Distinction winners, Intel hopes to inspire other schools to reinvigorate their own programs and prepare America's youth for success in the global economy," said Shelly Esque, vice president of Intel's Corporate Affairs Group. "We encourage schools with outstanding math and science programs to apply for next year's award."
The Intel Foundation and sponsoring companies distribute a total of $1 million in cash grants and awards to the winning schools. In recognition and in support of their efforts, each winning school won an estimated $100,000 in a combination of cash grants from the Intel Foundation and an award package that includes curriculum materials, professional development resources, hardware and software from sponsors including BrainHoney, BrainWare Safari, Dell,I-CAN, KDS, LanSchool, SAS, SMART and Pearson.
Valley Christian Junior High took home the Star Innovator Award, which brings an additional $15,000 from the Intel Foundation and other prizes for a total of $125,000 in cash and prizes. This large, independent school serves a diverse, urban population and employs a variety of methods to teach mathematics, including directed teaching, hands-on activities, collaborative work and discovery exploration. Over the past 4 years, Valley Christian students have consistently scored in the nation's top 17 percent in mathematics on the Stanford Achievement Test Series.
Of particular interest, Valley Christian uses "inverted learning," in which students watch prerecorded webcasts of lessons as homework, reserving class time for practice. The effects include increased student engagement, increased retention and the utilization of multiple forms of personalized learning through individual work, pair share, group work, and one-on-one student-teacher interactions.

The labs are interconnected through GEANT, the pan-European data network dedicated to the research and education communities. The resources can be used redundantly: if someone needs to conduct a test and one of the labs is busy at the time, the researcher can be directed to another lab and use its equipment remotely.
The laboratory will be managed by the university's Cisco® Networking Academy® team. Itwill also help the university's collaboration with the 6DEPLOY-2 project funded by the European Union's Seventh Framework Program, whose aim is disseminating knowledge about IPv6 and supporting its deployment.
As the world prepares for the adoption of the next-generation Internet Protocol, education on IPv6 becomes crucial. The IPv6 lab in Budapest offers the opportunity to develop a solid knowledge base on the new protocol, which will help ensure the continuity of operation of institutions and companies.
Backgrounder on IPv6
Due to the spectacular growth in the adoption of the Internet and Internet-based technologies worldwide, public IP address space is becoming increasingly scarce. The convergence of technologies and the increasing number of devices on the Internet both require new address space.
According to estimates from Cisco Internet Business Solutions Group (IBSG), by 2020, there will be approximately 50 billion devices connected to the Internet, each of them using one or more IP addresses. In 2008, the number of things connected to the Internet exceeded the number of people on earth. By 2020, this ratio is expected to be 1:6, meaning more than six connected devices for every person on earth.
IPv6 means a quantum leap compared with IPv4 in terms of available address space. With the IPv6 protocol, there will be enough IP addresses to allocate 100 addresses to every atom on the earth's surface. There could be 4.8 trillion addresses for every star in the known universe.
In January 2011, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) allocated the last free IPv4 blocks to the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). APNIC, the Regional Internet Registry covering Asia Pacific started to distribute the last available block on April 18, 2011. RIPE-NCC, covering Europe, Middle East and parts of Central Asia, is expected to do the same in the first quarter of 2012.
As an early pioneer in IPv6 technology, Cisco has been a driving force in developing IPv6 through various standards bodies, including the Internet Engineering Task Force, and has been shipping a wide variety of end-to-end IPv6 products and solutions.
BME has been covering IPv6 as part of its education and research portfolio ever since the standard's development has started.
In June 2011, Cisco participated in World IPv6 Day, a 24-hour global "test drive" of IPv6. In Hungary, several organizations, including BME as well as the national research and education network operated by the National Information Infrastructure Development Institute (NIIFI), successfully participated in World IPv6 Day.
Located at the Department of Telecommunications at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, the lab is an integral part of an international network of IPv6 training and research facilities and is connected to some 20 similar centers around the globe.Cisco donated the lab's networking and communications equipment.
Key Facts / Highlights:
Operating under the umbrella of the 6DEPLOY-2 project funded by the European Union's Seventh Framework Program, the objective of the lab is to provide an open environment for validating solutions, network setups and applications built on the next-generation Internet Protocol, known as IPv6. Internet experts, including academics, government administrators and telecom specialists, can be trained both on-site and through virtual access in innovative information and communications technology solutions relating to the adoption of IPv6.

Ricoh announces the GR DIGITAL IV - A digital camera offering enhanced Quick Shooting capability and image quality with a Hybrid AF System and GR ENGINE IV
Tokyo, Japan, September 15, 2011-Ricoh Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Shiro Kondo) today announces the development and release of the GR DIGITAL IV digital camera, the successor model to the GR DIGITAL III, which offers enhanced Quick Shooting capability and image quality.
The GR DIGITAL III (released in August 2009) was a compact digital camera with high image quality that came with a 28mm/F1.9 GR Lens, the GR ENGINE III, and a high-sensitivity CCD that continued the evolution of the concepts originally introduced in the first GR DIGITAL model (released in October 2005). In the two years since its release, it has been enthusiastically received by a broad range of customers including professional and amateur photographers.
The new GR DIGITAL IV, featuring a new image engine and a refined optical filter, exceeds the GR DIGITAL III and achieves the highest level of image quality in the history of the GR series.
Additionally, for the advancement of the Quick Shooting capabilities required to make sure you never miss a shot when out shooting, Ricoh has introduced a Hybrid AF System and an Image-sensor-shift Image Stabilization Function, which makes use of Ricoh's independently developed external AF sensor, and a 3-inch, approximately 1.23 million-dot VGA LCD monitor for heightened outdoor visibility. The addition of an electronic level that can detect inclination in the tilt direction, as well as the conventional horizontal direction also improves operability. Moreover, the inclusion of Dynamic Range Compensation makes it possible to shoot subjects in backlit or high-contrast scenes in the way the eye sees them, and Interval Composite, which can combine images shot at a certain shooting interval, advances the camera's expressive capabilities.
Ricoh will also continue to provide the highly praised function-expansion firmware.
